Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-Present

selectism - Who Shot Rock & Roll

What is Rock & Roll? For Gail Buckland, Rock & Roll is more than just a sound, it is a communal spirit. As a photography historian, Buckland has covered a fair range of topics. Her latest, not surprisingly, is Rock & Roll. In Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-Present Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 PresentBuckland compiles a thrilling list of figures in both portrait and action photographs. The obvious names – Dylan, Jagger, and Lennon – are there. So are rappers like LL Cool J and Salt ‘n Pepper. In this, Buckland offers not just a compelling photographic history, but one that speaks to the intermingling of sounds and breadth of “rock & roll” as a cultural phenomenon. Some audiophiles might scoff, understandably, yet those who live music through the stars and find inspiration in the voices will certainly be pleased by the selections.

Who Shot Rock & Roll releases later this month from Random House.

Tricker’s for Ark Brogue Boots

07 October 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Shoes | 14 comments »

selectism - trickers-arks-longtip-boots-01One of our main problems with Tricker’s was the pointy toe and sometimes awkward shape of the shoes. You can have all the heritage background and manufacturing prowess in the world, but it doesn’t mean much if the end result isn’t attractive.

Thankfully Museum Ark have made these custom order shoes – and that’s what all Tricker’s ‘collabs’ are, just custom orders – and have used a very handsome last to make these boots. We’re not usually fans of the long wing, but it really works in this circumstance. Word of warning – don’t wear these shoes (or any shoes with a leather sole) in rain, or you’ll be doing an involuntary James Brown impression during your trip to work. (Museum Ark)

Aquascutumn Double Breasted Overcoat

selectism - aquascutumn-double-breasted-overcoat

Overcoats are back. Of course the traditionalists will scoff at this notion in the same that Timbs wearers scoffed at the idea of Timb’s coming back. But, like it or not, there will be an avalanche of overcoats this season and Aquascutumn have got a head start with this number. The brown is an interesting shade – not quite as light as tan and almost, excuse the pun, golden brown. The fits a little slimmer than you might be used to for overcoats, but that’s no bad thing. Nom De Guerre Heavy Jumper

selectism - nom-de-guerre-shawl-sweater-01

Here’s a tip for all you budding online retailers – don’t stock Nom de Guerre. NDG are great, but everyone is stocking them this season. You can’t swing a virtual cat without hitting an online retailer stocking the label – it’s reached a point where we’re picking out NDG pieces based on how well they’re styled. Take this Jumper for instance. It’s been on other sites but Tres Bien were the best at styling it and so we featured their version. Our stance still stands on wool/nylon blends – don’t do it – but the front pockets make up for it. It doesn’t take much to please us sometimes. (Tres Bien)

Raf Simons for Fred Perry Holdall

We’re not recommending this piece – just letting you know it exists. While we’re usually more decisive than Anna Wintour on the worthiness of a product, we’re firmly on the fence when it comes to this bag. We kinda like the size and the good taste/bad tase cop in us enjoys the bronze colouring. But on the other hand, the bag does have a ‘laminated effect’  bag – in essence, it’s a spray painted bag. Is a spray painted bag worth £230? We’d say no. (The Corner)

02. Bicycle Parking, Long Term

“Sometimes “long term parking” is another way of saying “your bike got jacked” – not this time though, this is a much better deal. It’s a bike rack concept, but better than that, it’s a long term bike rack, including safe storage, WC, showers, and lounge. This is precisely what a city like Minneapolis is starving for.” (yanko)
