Selectism - MP3: Strong Arm Steady - Loose Girl, Produced By Madlib

01. Beck, Devendra & Mgmt Cover Leonard Cohen’s “Sisters Of Mercy”

“Following his excursion into Downtown NYC via Velvet Underground & Nico, Beck takes his Record Club to Montreal with a track-by-track smothering covering of Songs Of Leonard Cohen. As we mentioned when we posted “Suzanne,” he’s joined by “Devendra Banhart, Ben, Andrew and Matt from MGMT, Andrew from Wolfmother, Binki from Little Joy, and Brian [Lebarton] and Bram [Inscore] returning from the first Record Club.” Here they do “Sisters Of Mercy,” which should make your ears bleed less than their take on “Suzanne.”" (stereogum)

02. Buzzcocks, Futureheads, British Sea Power Banned From Beijing Festival

“Buzzcocks, The Futureheads, British Sea Power and Radio 4 are among the bands who have been stopped from playing the Beijing Modern Sky Festival bill, as all foreign acts have been dropped from the event’s line-up…No reason was given for the cancellations.” (nme)

04. New Thom Yorke/Flea Band to Play Surprise Los Angeles Gig Tonight (above)

“Last week, if you told me Thom Yorke was going to debut his still-nameless new band with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers the same day Kid A was named Best Album of the Decade by some website, I probably would have directed you to WeeklyWorldNews.com. But that’s exactly what’s happening tonight at L.A.’s Echoplex, according to a message from the man himself on Radiohead’s Dead Air Space blog. “It’s not that big, it’ll be total chaos and it’s kind of a rehearsal but if you are near by…” writes Thom.” (p4k)

NEWWORK Magazine Issue 4

Selectism - NEWWORK Magazine Issue 4

Opening up an issue of NEWWORK reminds me of what it was like to open a classic broadsheet newspaper during the Golden Age of newsprint. The bi-annual newsprint magazine “contributors are united in their passion to push the boundaries of their disciplines. Among the magazine’s special features are bold, custom-designed typefaces and a twist on the traditional newspaper format” The format alone is worthy of a browsing. Folded broadsheets are laid inside of a thick stock cover that does not bind but “files” the issues together.

The fourth issue of NEWWORK MAGAZINE finds a range of artists and designers harnessing the power of contrast in its various forms to bring dimension, meaning and mystery to their work. Witness the juicy juxtaposition of graphic and narrative elements in the iconic imagery of photographer Albert Watson. Observe the synergy of classic Swiss restraint and unbridled post-modern play in the typographic design of Wolfgang Weingart and the kinetic interplay of geometric and organic forms in the poster design of Bruno Monguzzi. From the one-two punch of high contrast black-and-white forms in the photography of Julian Abram Wainwright and the drawings of Robert Longo, to the poetic tension between two and three dimensions in Werner Jeker’s enigmatic collages, this issue profiles artists who use dynamic dualisms to yield complex and elegant visual solutions.

Selectism - Uniqlo in Paris

Doors have opened for Paris’ Uniqlo shop and just in time for the launch of +J. Interview has a few words on the opening gala. “Last night’s opening bash was overwhelming. The store was lit up pink and red; there was the stock exchange-style quotation messaging on the stairway and a packed crowd drinking sake out of Masus, those little wooden boxes, and listening to Swedish singer Lykke Lee… Every single inch of the 23,000 square foot space been has been designed for maximum marketing reach by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, who has become a sort of secret weapon for retailers (he recently redesigned Colette) who want to get customers so excited they will spend, spend, spend.” (photo credit: flickr)
