Edifice Weatherwear Collection

Here’s another teasing collection from Japan. This time Edifice have teamed up with Mackintosh and Lavenham Scotland’s Traditional Weatherwear to create their new quilted jacket ‘weatherwear’ collection. Quilted jackets have sprung back into popularity, with the hipster crowd being the first to hop on the bandwagon. Edifice have made a series of quilted jackets in nylon and tweed (pictured above) and, as usual, it’s exclusive to Japan. It’s not online yet either, so you’ll have to have a proxy who’s on his game to get you one of these. Or you could ask Jeff (our managing editor) who’s over in Tokyo right now.

Take a look at the rest of the collection after the leap.

Givenchy Leather Backpack

Not been affected whatsoever by the recession? Read on. You’ll need all the extra coins you have to get hold of this piece. At $1,045, it’s not one for the ‘nouveau rich’ as Karl Lagerfeld would say. It sounds odd to say, but fashion isn’t in fashion right now – so carrying a Givenchy backpack might not be the way to go if you’re rocking a workwear-inspired look. Everyone else is free to rock this to their heart’s content. You won’t be ‘on point’ or ‘bang on trend’, but you’ll have a good bag. (Aloha Rag)

Closer looks are after the click.

LPcover Lover

selectism - LPcover Lover

Mark this as a great way to kill time on a Friday. LPcover Lover exposes some of the world’s forgotten music graphics. While we’ve previously mentioned a few books highlighting exception work in this field, LPcover Lover grants an opportunity to basically just have a good laugh… usually at the expense of those depicted on the LPs. Good times. (via It’s Nice That).

A few favorites after the jump.

Aquascutum Coated Canvas Briefcase

selectism - aquascutum-briefcase

This is listed as a tote bag over at Luisviaroma, but it looks like a briefcase/attache case, so that’s what we’ll call it. For a company that was on the brink of bankruptcy just a few months ago, Aquascutum have done an amazing job of getting their new collection into stores. They’re known for their coats but, judging from this bag, their accessories range is nothing to sniff at.

While this is a great bag, the question to ask is ‘just how much can it carry?’ And the answer to that? Not much. If you only ever carry a magazine and some loose files, this will be perfect but laptop luggers will want to look elsewhere. (Luisviaroma)

Kasino A4 Closes Down

23 October 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

selectism - kasino-magazine

Independent magazine Kasino A4 has closed down after ten issues. However, contrary to 99.9% of magazine closures this year, the closure was entirely voluntary; the team simply decided that it’d be best to end on a high rather than drudging along to irrelevancy.

The Finnish magazine focused on one topic per issue, such as family and sex. Suitably, the last issue is entitled ‘deadline’ and will focus on tragedy, death and the ‘other side’. Latecomers can still get some issues on Kasino’s website – including the launch issue – so it will be relatively easy to pretend that you were part of the in crowd all along. (Kasino)

01. Peter Paul Rubens: Graphic Designer
“Today, Peter Paul Rubens is celebrated as the Old Master with a taste for canvasses grand in scale and extravagant in splendor — a man who liked to work big, in all senses of that word. Rubens, no doubt, enjoyed painting large pictures with large themes and large women. These works, however, have an unfortunate tendency to occlude his many other accomplishments.” (design observer).

02. Annual Pumpkin Faces
“Halloween is widely celebrated and hectically commercialized all over the world. The history behind it is backed up by several different theories – ranging from commemorating the day that the spirits of the dead are given a chance to roam the earth again, preparing for the change of season which sees evil spirits being released, to retaliating against the dead who become a danger to the living on the 31st of October as they bring illness and ruin the harvest… Halloween is also a great opportunity to have fun with DIY pumpkin projects.” (designboom).

O3. Wenger at 60
“It is a measure of Arsene Wenger’s impact on global football that having arrived at Arsenal in 1996 to the headline “Arsene Who?”, he could now waltz into almost any managerial post in the world.” (BBC).

04. Fountainhead Reposited: A Pedal Powered Water Purification Island (above)
“Synch your workout with a little river detox, then rehydrate with a cup of the fresh water you just filtered. This people-powered water purification island, designed by Jakub Szczesny as part of the Synchronicity architecture and art festival in Warsaw, Poland, hooks up basic exercise machines to kinetically pump polluted water through four filters into overhead tanks that spill into a large drinking fountain at the end of the cycle. This floating platform on the Vistula River aims to empower citizens toward environmental clean-up, and apparently would work on any body of water with enough local bodies willing to pedal for their potables.” (Inhabitat).

Details | The Perfect Corduroy Suit

selectism - details-corduroy-suits

The new Details site has a nice feature on Corduroy suits. With Etro, Band Of Outsiders, Salvatore Ferragamo and Burberry all making appearance, this guide is definitely one for those who haven’t been hit by the recession too hard. If you can get past that, then there are some great cord suits to be seen. We hate to nit-pick, but we’re not so sure that a cord suit is an easier proposition than a tweed one. While the latter can be a little stiff, a cord suit can go very wrong if it isn’t styled right.

Selectism Feature | Oi Polloi

steve oipolloi 1 Selectism Feature | Oi Polloi

While there’s a been a major boon in online retailers in the last couple of years, Oi Polloi are known for being one of the first (and best) to do it. We recently caught up with co-founder Steve Sanderson to find out about how Oi Polloi’s origins, their own label and their magazine, The Rig Out (which the interviewer Glen Kitson worked on).

G- I know working with you on the Rig Out we try to keep it simple, to be uncontrived. It’s almost trying to sell fashion to blokes who wouldn’t admit to being interested in style or fashion?

SS- I’d rather try and make things look real, than looking at some model staring off into the distance for his long lost love…. That stuff is nonsense. We’d love to develop what the Rig Out is; there are loads that could be done with it. It’s a nice way of doing different types of projects, we can work on projects with brands and do nice little stories and put our stamp on things. Rather than doing it all though the Internet, its almost as a reaction from all the blog type sites, its not against them but things are nice in print. People like it because its real, that why people still prefer to buy vinyl or CD’s as opposed to downloading music.
We like paraphernalia, its real. Its tangible.
