Kings of Leon for Surface to Air Collection

Selectism - Kings of Leon for Surface to Air Collection

Straight up – Kings of Leon deserve this. The All American boys put out their first EP years ago but it was not until the festival circuit in the USA and Europe in 2008 did the world begin to appreciate their mix of good ole American rock with heart heavy lyrics. “Over the past year, Surface to Air and KOL have become fast friends and genuine fans of each others work while developing a mutual respect and admiration for one and others creative point of view. It is with this artistic integrity and in the spirit of sharing and collaboration that we are happy to introduce this capsule collection ‘S2A x KOL’.”

Selectism - Dr. Martens' Pop-Up By Campaign

FRAME has a great piece up discussing the first pop-up shop build out by Dr. Martens in London. ”Gypframe shelving, industrial PVC curtains, construction-site lighting, metal-grid lockers, shrink-wrap and stencilled signage all belong to the warehouse vernacular in this Dr Martens pop-up store in London… The interior of the first Dr. Martens pop-up store resembles that of a warehouse, a building type that’s been used for temporary retail spaces before  In this case, however, it refers to Doc Martens’ brand identity, says Philip Handford, creative director of design firm Campaign.”

Paul Smith Jeans Spring/Summer 2010

selectism - paul-smith-red-ear-spring-2010-01

Paul Smith’s known for his use of colour and it’s used to great effect on his youth based line, ‘Jeans’. Whilst his mainline tends to keep colour restricted to linings, Jeans is decidedly bolder, making patterned western shirts alongside brightly coloured check, polka dot and Hawaiian shirts. To compliment the colours are several calmer wardrobe mainstays, including sweatpants, denim jackets, macs and blazers.

Kienholz: The Hoerengracht

Walked through The Hoerengracht instillation at the National Gallery (London) yesterday, and was most impressed with the interpretation of the exhibition. Curator Colin Wiggins ties the sculptural work, composed by Ed and Nancy Kienholz in the mid-80s, to visual traditions well established in European art. Unlike a few other exhibitions focused on a single piece, visitors are not overwhelmed by comparative works here. It’s a quick lesson and then into the experience. Well worth popping in if your in London, it’s on view through February 21, 2010.

The above video gives an indication of the feel of walking through the Kienholz vision of Amsterdam’s Red Light District, as well as an introduction to Wiggins interpretation.

Alexander McQueen ‘Monster’ Half Boots

Here’s yet another desirable boot to add to the wish list. At this point there’s so many boots to choose from, we almost feel bad bringing you another boot to drool over. Almost. We could write an essay about why we like them (the height, the leather, how good they’d look scuffed) but sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. (Oki-Ni)

Patrik Ervell Hooded Sweater

selectism - patrik-ervell-hooded-sweater

As much as we like our brogues, desert boots and fancy knitwear, there’s times when we just want to put on a hooded top and be done with it. This Patrik Ervell pieces gives us the opportunity to do just that – and look good while you’re doing it. We’d advise everyone to take a break from looking super stylish sometimes; Let’s be honest, the Sartorialist isn’t coming to your town. (South Willard)

John Smedley ‘Brennan’ Purple Trousers

We’re sure this will rile up a few comments. For the record, we heartily back roll ups and will continue to keep posting them. We’re the 1% who can rock them with flair (and that percentage includes plenty of our readers).

One thing people can’t argue with are these John Smedley trousers. They’re purdy, they’re purple and they’d look great with a surprising amount of footwear you already have in your wardrobe. They even come unfinished – perfect for roll ups. (John Smedley)

Fjallraven New York

selectism - Fjallraven New York

Yesterday marked the grand opening of Fjallraven’s first North American outlet. The Swedish company was founded in 1950 by a young lad named Ake Nordin. At 14, he’d already realized that much of the equipment produced for hiking and outdoor pursuits was not up to his standard. Rather than make due, he created a framed back pack. This pack formed the basis for Fjallraven, which to this day is still noted for its day packs.

The store, located at 262 Mott Street in New York’s NoLita, carries all the Fjallraven favorites – included (obviously) bags and the 60/40 Greenland Parka. Aside from those, the store also peppers in some other European outdoor goods in the form of Dale of Norway sweaters (these are super popular amongst women in Southeastern, MA… just saying), Granfors Axes, and Hanwag Boots. A sprinkling of Scandinavian and American vintage outdoor wear is also available.

With the store opening, Fjallraven will officially begin making all product available in the United States. Great news for all with an outdoors gear fetish, perhaps better than the shop itself.

More images of the newly opened space after the jump.

Selectism - Last Buell Rolls Off Production Line

01. Last Buell Rolls Off Production Line (above)

“Following the shock decision by parent company Harley-Davidson to kill off the Buell marque, the last bike has now been built and the Buell factory in East Troy, Wisconsin, USA, is now being prepared for closure.” (mcn)

02. Individualism, Identity and Bicycles in Northern California

“Campus is flat enough — and large enough — and the weather so brilliant that nearly everyone cycles. And whoever all these cyclists are, as individuals, their individuality is burnished by the bikes they ride and by the way they ride them. It’s as though the bikes are only partly transportation, as though they were really machines for differentiation.” (nyt)

03. Rihanna Kitchen Scale Features Ipod Dock, Heavy D’s Scale Plays Vinyl

“If you haven’t yet invested in an iPod dock for the kitchen, the kids at ADE (a German company that manufactures cooking equipment for commercial and home use) have something right up your alley. The Rihanna kitchen scale features an iPod dock, an LCD display, and a 2 watt speaker that sits demurely beneath glass weighing area. This bad boy will handle up to 11 pounds (graduated in .04 ounce steps). Look for it soon-ish for around $105. And no, it has nothing to do with the popular recording artist of the same name.” (engadget)

04. Cardboard Meeting Booths – New Meme?

“A few of these “furniture as meeting space” proposals have popped up over the past year and I wonder if it is just a meme or a new prototypical piece office furniture, eventually to be as common as desk, task chair, filing cabinet…?” (workalicious)
