Selectism - Tim Van Steenbergen Autumn 2009

Fashonisto gives their word on the Tim Van Steenbergen Autumn 2009 offering. “Belgian designer Tim Van Steenbergen demonstrates his keen eye for design with his current fall collection. Moved by the intricate details found in nature, the designer has fashioned a collection that combines unique, but subtle cuts with varied textures. Based in an appropriate color palette of earth tones, the collection’s details are best highlighted. At first sight, sculpted hoods make quite the powerful statement, while the designer’s point of view continues to be carried out with the effortless draping of fabric and careful placement of buttons.”

Peckham Rye Scarves for 20LTD

Selectism - Peckham Rye Scarves for 20LTD

20LTD is picking up steam in the latter end of the year it would seem. Their latest is a collection of scarves limited to 15 units each from Peckham Rye. Eight different weaves are available now. “Reflecting the humour of British style, Peckham Rye (cockney rhyming slang for tie) is a collection of slim blade ties in printed, woven and knitted silk, ‘Cockney Chokers’, slim tubular scarves in eccentric paisleys and luxurious handmade silk scarves, uniquely lined in spun silk. There is in our humble opinion no brand or designer anywhere in the world who understands better what ties and scarves should look like. Immaculate.”

Factotum Check Coat

selectism - factotum-coat-01

Forgive us for teasing, but here’s another Japanese piece for you. And to make it worse, this one is only sold through stores – which means you’ll have to either know someone in Japan or get your proxy on. As for the coat itself, what more can we say? It’s a great, purdy, medium weight coat for fall and winter and it’s great for a bit of check clashing (which you really should be doing if you’re gonna wear checks this season). (Mindtrive)

Alternative colourways after that leap.

“What Evan Williams Did For Bourbon” | 1970s Advertising Campaign

selectism - "What Evan Williams Did For Bourbon" | 1970s Advertising Campaign

Founded in 1783 by Welsh Born Evan Williams, the Evan Williams brand is notable for being Kentucky’s first distiller. Williams moved to the area while it was still officially part of Virginia, in 1780, and became an integral member of the local political scene. He was an early member of the board of trustees of Louisville and later served as Harbor Master for the City (which is located on the Ohio River.

For us, the most important part of Williams’ life history is the discovery that converting excess corn and grain into whiskey would avoid waste. The small distillery he set up on 5th Street in Lousiville has grown exponentially, now bottles labeled Evan Williams are the 2nd most purchased Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey in the United States.

History has been a part of the Evan Williams identity for some time. Searching through the company website recently, I was tickled by the “What Evan Williams did for Bourbon” campaign of the 1970s. Linking the Welshman to other (perhaps more important) inventors, the advertisements employ a really winning method of heritage construction. Can’t help but think a similar approach would be welcome today.

Lyle & Scott Fair Isle Crewneck Jumper

selectism - lyle-scot-fair-isle-jumper-01

Despite what they do (DSM collaborations, reintroducing their heritage line) Lyle & Scott are still associated with a rather chavtastical brand of wearer over in the UK. While we would recommend and simple removal of the logo, they could also just keep on making pieces like this one. The main thing that makes this piece nice is the Fair Isle pattern. It’s surprisingly hard to get right (just take a look at any high street version) – so it should be appreciated when it avoids the ‘I stole this from the set of Wham’s “Last Christmas” video’ vibe. Distill moves to iPhone format

17 November 2009, 11.30 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

selectism - distill-magazine-iphone-01

The Sunday Best turns us onto the news that Distill has started distributing in digital format. The magazine mad among you will remember that Distill had a brief time as a print magazine, releasing two issues before folding. Whilst we made the assumption that they had no further plans, they’ve now relaunched as an iPhone app.

Funded by Swatch, the magazine continues on the same path as the print edition, rounding up features and editorials from fashion magazines. Whilst we love the embracing of new media, we do wonder if solely distributing via one phone is the way to go for media. Despite Apple’s dominance, there are still plenty of folks out there who don’t have, want or need an iPhone.

Take a look at spreads and a video review after the leap.

Outlier Khaki OG Pants

17 November 2009, 09.24 | Posted in Fashion, bike | 1 comment »

selectism - Outlier Khaki OG Pants

All to often my (clumsy) self ruins a pair of khaki trousers within weeks of ownership. Coffee spills. Chain grease. The odd battle with a bbq. These frequently come together to transform a once respectable pair of paints into ratty weekend wear.

The guys at Outlier certainly haven’t solved my personal problems. They have, however, introduced Khaki into their color palette with a new look for their OG pants. Still resistant to stains and rain, the OG paint is made of Schoeller Dryskin Extreme Fabric. They also got a bit of stretch, and while perfect for the bike, they also fit tidily into a terrific travel wardrobe.

Or, if your just a little clumsy (like me) they might be the ticket.

Full info at Outlier, further images after the jump.
