Coming Soon ‘Le Chef Chic’ Spring/Summer 2010

16 November 2009, 18.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Here’s another couple of drops from Yohji Yamamoto’s Coming Soon. First up is the video displaying his SS10 collection (above). This is positively archaic by interwebz standards but it’s always enjoyable seeing how the clothes work on a moving body. It also gives us a nice excuse to post up a link to Coming Soon’s new blog. While we’d usually be the first to say that most company blogs are a little dull, this one bucks that trend. Featuring interviews with folks behind the label, profiles and behind the scenes looks, it’s a great example of how a company can make use of the format.

Alex Yamaguchi Wool Puffer

The hardest part to get right in an online shop is the photography – as this picture shows. Despite this shot, you’re just gonna have to trust us when we say this piece is a doozy. It’s subtle enough for those days when you can’t be bothered with big style statements and has just enough functionality to make it wearable into winter. You can also be sure that you won’t run into too many folks wearing it. (Assembly)

Mr. Start Canvas Holdall

Didn’t we say this was the year of the relaunch? Start have joined the crew, relaunching their site last week. Apart from all the usual guff (new layout, etc etc) there’s also a whole host of new Mr. Start branded products that have hit the site. Having previously dabbled in suits, shirts and ties, the line branches out to knitted hats, leather gloves and bags. Although this is labelled as a Mr. Start holdall, closer inspection will show that it’s made by Calabrese (we’ll assume it’s a collaboration). Either way, it’s a pretty segsy bag. (Start)

Bundaberg Brewed Drinks

selectism - Bundaberg Brewed Drinks

It wouldn’t be right to only discuss the merits of American craft sodas (or those bottled in Mexico). Bundaberg of Australia has been handcrafting beverages for 40 years. The operation is family owned, based in Queensland, and is “a refreshing change to the shortcuts of the modern world.”

Their Ginger Beer is a standout (and thankfully available in export markets). For those in Australia, a wider range of Apple and Lemon ales is also available. To be totally honest, it was the shape and pull tab of the bottle that drew me to Bundaberg… not the first time I’ve been swayed by design, but at least a positive example of the happening.

I’ll leave it to Jeff to assess the worth of Bundaberg in a Dark n’ Stormy (I can only imagine its the way to go down under).

Beef! Magazine

Apparently beef isn’t when you need two gats to sleep or when you roll 30 deep. Beef is a new magazine launched by Guhner and Jahr. According to Magtastic, who turned us onto news of this magazine, “Beef! is like Esquire, but with meat instead of suits: clean design, good illustration and photography, four different kinds of paper (all thick and matte), original content ideas, and a lot of “what modern man simply has to know”. While the idea of a meat-based Esquire is absurd when said in a sentence, the idea sounds more intriguing (and tantalising) by the minute.

Spreads from the magazine are after the leap.

NYT | Dress Code: This Just in From the 1890s

Selectism - NYT | Dress Code: This Just in From the 1890s

A nice article this week in The New York Times on distinguishing today’s fashion from looks of centuries past. “Not long ago, big brass-buttoned military coats looked a bit extreme. So did high-button, high-lapel vests and slim tweed trousers. And so did guys who tucked said trousers into high, old-fashioned hunting boots. Now these clothes (along with those ever-present beards and mustaches) look like downtown defaults compared with fall runway looks like cardinal-red tailcoats at Ralph Lauren, capes and bowlers at Alexander McQueen and knee breeches at Robert Geller.”
