Selectism - Bottega Veneta Silver Onyx Tie Clip

For the man who wears a tie often, this Bottega Venata Antique Silver Onyx Tie Clip may well be the choice accessory gift. At 280$US, your budget is only slightly tapped, but damn if this isn’t a beauty. The best part is that you can buy it online if you do not happen to have a flagship in your city. A great gift.

Selectism - Oliver People's Riley Eyeglasses with Clip

The Oliver People’s Riley frames get an upgrade for Spring 2010. As Acquire mentions, “One piece from Oliver People’s Resort/Spring 2010 collection we thought deserves its own post was their Riley style which is getting an update with a retro clip-on sunglass lens which you may have seen Elijah Wood sporting in their latest campaign.” A classic look that will set you apart from the pack.

Selectism - The Singer Getaway Weekender Bag

This one keeps popping up in the inbox. T-Michael’s “Singer Getaway” Weekender Bag is shaped like your dad’s favorite lunchbox but with a lot more room. Braided leather stappings give it a unique finish. Pack it up. “Designed in Skostredet, handcrafted in Portugal and made out of vegetable tanned leather. They come in 3 colourways; British racing green, Oxblood and Ebony.”

Permanent Vacation Spring/Summer 2010

selectism - permanent-vacation-spring-2010

A short but sweet affair, Permanent Vacation’s SS10 men looks consist of only four looks, all pictured above. Hailing from Gothenburg, the Swedish label focus mainly on womenswear, but their menswear ain’t too shabby either. Our favourite piece from the admittedly small selection are the light wash denim shorts, which make a nice step up from the dark denim shorts that made their appearance last summer. The shirt on the left isn’t for the style-timid but it’s right up our alley.

Bauhaus at the MOMA

11 November 2009, 18.14 | Posted in Art, Design, Furniture | No comments »

The last time the Bauhaus was explored at MOMA was 1938. Last Sunday, the school returned to focus in New York with a new exhibition entitled Workshops for Modernity: Bauhaus 1919-1933. Reviews thus far have been positive from Wall Street Journal’s Candace Jackson (who is heard in the above video) and the New York Time’s Nicolai Ouroussoff.

Both reviews are well worth reading (and, I’ll add should have been posted on Monday… some jet lag and a loss of a notebook has slowed proceedings), and the exhibition itself seems poised to do what good design exhibitions are supposed to do – shatter preconceived notions and raise new questions, all while celebrating understood achievement. The discovery of Breuer’s “African” chair no doubt adds to the allure of the show.

Workshops for Modernity remains on view through January 25, 2010.

Barker ‘Brando’ Brogue

selectism - barker-brando-brogue-01This shoe ticks all our boxes. A brogue shoe? Yep. Suede? It’s covered in it. Contrast sole and piping? Yes and yes. In fact, you couldn’t have made a more perfect shoe for us if you’d trawled through our archives and taken note of the most used keywords. The only surprise is that this isn’t done by one of the usual suspects. Instead old-school shoeists Barker have turned their hands to this style and, we have to say, they’ve done a great job. Another thing to note is the affordable £160 pricetag, so what are you waiting for? (Edwards)

Mackintosh ‘Duncan’ Coat

selectism - mackintosh-duncan-coat

Whilst everyone (and we mean everyone) is making their online store at the moment, we reserve our props for those who are adding a nice twist. Mackintosh are one such company, allowing anybody to make customized versions of their coats. The options are thin on the ground – you can only adjust the lining and collar – but it’s a nice addition nonetheless. Take a gander at two of our creations, the ‘fawn’ and navy colour both go extremely well with the Alpaca collar, if we say so ourselves. Make your own mack over at Mackintosh.

Tank Magazine

selectism - tank-magazine-02

We’ve all heard the horror stories about the state of magazines at the moment; if they’re not shutting down, they’re scaling back, but what about other ways to cut costs? Tank magazine have found a novel answer – spiral bounding. The bounding is cheaper than the usual bounding methods and allows for easier use. You could even leave it open like a coffee table book. In fact, it’s such a great idea that we’re wondering why other magazines haven’t made use of the method.

Take a look at the new design after the leap.

Apostles of Beauty: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago

11 November 2009, 08.37 | Posted in Art | No comments »

curated mag - Apostles of Beauty: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago

Assembling 187 handcrafted, organic works the Art Institute of Chicago traces the origins of the Arts and Crafts Movement to its ripening against the reform movement in Chicago. A wide range of objects, from ceramic to metal, highlights the full scope of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic.

Forming as a response to modern life and mass-production, the Arts and Crafts Movement eventually united hand and machine in a progressive aesthetic moment. This is the first exhibition in 3 decades dedicated to the movement, and the first to point to Chicago as a center where it blossomed so fully.

The exhibition is complemented by a catalog from Yale University Press and runs through January 31, 2010. (via Curated).
