Selectism - Alex Creamer: NYC Spaghetti

01. Dieter Rams, the man who shaped our world

“Dieter Rams’s house in Kronberg, outside Frankfurt, is very, very neat. The floor is an infinite grid of cool white ceramic tiles, from which everything else takes its cue. Rectangular desks and shelves are crisply aligned, papers are aligned with the desk, paperweights aligned with the piles, with just the occasional foil of a circular bowl to break the rigid grip of the right angle. In his basement workshop, the tools are lined up with military precision, not a millimetre out of sync.” (timesonline)

02. Alex Creamer: NYC Spaghetti (above)

“I created this spaghetti packaging for a university project last year. The brief was to package one of 5 difficult items i.e. eggs, a rose, custard powder, spaghetti or marbles. I chose spaghetti. The spaghetti sits on a 3d model of the Chrysler building that was modeled on CAD by my friend Ben Thorpe. And then modeled out of high density foam at uni. Creating a spaghetti model of the Chrysler building!” (monoscope>substudio)

03. Saw this on Pedal Consumption…

“a bike rack that looks good when the bike is out to play. utilizing this rack in an apartment or room helps minimize clutter as it makes your prized bike a focal point rather than a hallway-hazard… this rack has been built to hold almost all bicycles, from steel frame track bikes, to cyclocross bikes to your favorite tri-bike. let me know your handlebar size so I can make it fit your bike specifically. also, let me know the size of your bike so we can make sure the frame fits.” (trksrex)

04. Mobile Evolution by Kyle Bean

“If you enjoy Russian matryoshka dolls, you’ll enjoy this creation by UK-based designer Kyle Bean. It shows the evolution of mobile phones from the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X to the Apple iPhone.” (dm)

Aether Interview: David Taylor

Selectism - Aether Interview Series: David Taylor

David Taylor has done a few things worthy of envy. First, he played College Baseball at USC. Then, having become bored with the diamond, he moved to University of Arizona and on a whim joined the Wildcat football team. No small achievement, on either end, but perhaps not the everyone’s dream.

More universal, then, might be David’s current job. He spends his days listening to new music and thinking about how it might translate to commercial use. In short, he’s responsible for that moment where music clicks with moving image and finds the right balance and tone to articulate a products feeling. Or, more basically, that moment where the consumer goes “I remember that song from that commercial.”

I spoke with David to learn a little more about his background and the process behind a job that quite frankly sounds amazing.

Selectism - JeanRichard Diverscope JR1000 Goldwaters Watch

Here’s a subtle take on the rose gold which our editor in chief is all about at the moment. This diver’s watch from JeanRichard features rose gold on the double crowns and hands. It  features a fat 43mm casing and an alligator band. This may work for some. (timezone)

Alkr Laptop Sleeves

selectism - Alkr Laptop Sleeves

Alkr operates on a simple premise – the sleeves that protect our technological bits and bobs should be built to the same exacting standards as those bits and bobs. Primarily this means laptops and iPods. There’s also a secondary premise – the pieces that protect our beloved laptops and iPods should be fun, should cheer you up, and should make travel a bit easier. Under these ideas, Alkr was founded in early 2009. This month their first wares hit shops (and exclusive trio of The Hideout, Grand, and Oi Polloi) as well as their own online portal. The official launch is November 21, so be on the lookout for a splash of color then.

Details of the laptop sleeves follow.

Selectism - Rogue Territory Autumn/Winter 2009

In 2007, Karl Thoennessen did what many want to do. He quit his day job to pursue his passion for denim. After moving to Los Angeles and working as an apprenticeship under Brian Kim at Work Custom Jeans, he recently moved onto his first formal collection for Autumn/Winter 2009 under the Rogue Territory name. “Rogue Territory is dedicated to preserving the trade of handcrafted goods and supporting the skilled artisans who employ creativity and manual dexterity to produce truly unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.”

Brioni Spring/Summer 2010 Accessories

selectism - brioni-spring-2010-accessories-02.jpg

While we’ve been quick to tag Brioni as ‘not really our thing’, their SS10 lookbook did spring up a few suprises in the accessories department. Firstly there’s this set of bags, which would all slot easily into a stylish guys wardrobe. Then there’s the belt, which verge on ostentatious but manage to stay on the right side of it. And then there’s the surprisingly fetching shoes. If you’re gonna be wearing deck shoes next summer, you could do a lot worse than a pair of Brioni.

Take a leap at the collection after the leap.
