Patrik Ervell Patterned Sweater

selectism - patrik-ervell-pattern-jumper-01

We know these did the blog rounds a while back, but we just had to highlight this jumper. The multi-coloured version is very nice, but there’s something to be said for this jumper’s understated simplicity. It’s made from alpaca wool (fact fans: alpaca is a domesticated member of the llama family and produces finer wool than cashmere). More importantly, this lands just the right side of grandad swag for our tastes – no easy feat. (Opening Ceremony)

Beauty & Youth for Mata Deck Boots

10 November 2009, 14.30 | Posted in Shoes | No comments »

selectism - beauty-youth-mata-deck-boot-01Deck boots came onto the radar at the very start of this autumn season (practically July) and they’ve kind slid off the radar since then. The main reason for this was because there was practically no-one bar Sperry doing good looking versions of the style. Beauty & Youth have aimed to remedy that, teaming up with Mata for these boots. While we like the boots for the usual ’style guy’ reasons (the eyelets, the suede, the sole, etc) our main reason for liking these is the cosy lining. Sometimes all you want in a shoe is for it to be darn comfortable and this shoe provides that. (Lumine)

selectism - Simon Evans | Artist

Simon Evans was born in London in 1972. He now lives and works in Berlin. I encountered his work via brief mention on It’s Nice That earlier this week. Evans work combines drawing, collage, and sometimes more to articulate feelings of loneliness and isolation. His is work born from memory of home, and work fueled as well with some spot on humor. Intricate and engrossing, Evans is quite frankly a joy. He is represented by James Cohen Gallery.

As example, Symptoms of Loneliness (2009) of pen, paper, scotch tape and correction fluid is seen above.

A few more of Evans’ works after the jump.

APC Flecked Crewneck Sweater

selectism - apc-flecked-wool-crewneck-01

It’s offically winter now, so there’ll be no shortage of knitwear from us. First up is this APC flecked number, which just dropped the other day over at HS columnists Azita. The difference between this and say, Our Legacy’s flecked jumper, is the sheer amount of flecking. We’re not even sure what to call it (fleckeration? extreme flecking?). Either way, this is a worthy addition to your sweater team (or whatever you call the bunch of jumpers in your wardrobe). Put it on and get your suave on. (Azita)

Selectism - Atherton Residence / Turnbull Griffin Haesloop

01. Philadelphia Announces the Tallest LEED Certified Building in US

“Located in downtown Philadelphia right above the Suburban rail station, the Comcast Center has been awarded the title of “tallest LEED certified building in the US” after earning a Gold Certification for LEED-CS (Core & Shell). The obelisk-like 58 story tower is covered in high-performance glass and sunscreens, and features louvers in the atria to help optimize daylight inside the building. Many other green design features help this mixed-use skyscraper reduce energy consumption, making it a great example of environmentally responsible urban growth.” (inhabitant)

02. Boxed and Labelled: New Approaches to Packaging Design

“This book demonstrates the diverse solutions designers have found to deal with many different themes such as creating pproachability through a whimsical and lighthearted appearance and material surfaces or promoting value and trustworthiness or conveying a handmade feeling to an artisanal product with a sophisticated, refined and purposeful look. All of the featured examples deliver their own unique brand values and experiences and set them apart in the competitive marketplace. Boxed and Labelled offers exciting solutions and presents state-of the-art packaging design today.” (Amazon Selectism | Around the Web)

03. Atherton Residence / Turnbull Griffin Haesloop (above)

“Located on the peninsula south of San Francisco, this house sits on an internal suburban flag lot. The previous 1950’s house, which was removed due to structural problems, featured mature landscaping and a manmade pond that the clients wanted to preserve. They wanted their new house to be a private retreat that maximizes the drama of the pond and takes advantage of the privacy of the site. As advocates of year round outdoor dining and entertaining, the clients wanted a house that would open up to the landscape and have as many outdoor rooms as possible” (archdaily)

04. An iPhone app that tells you which part of the subway car to board

“Exit Strategy NYC tells you which part of the subway car you have to board to wind up at any specific point at any station in the system, which seems totally absurd if you don’t live in a city that’s always in a rush, but will undoubtedly have value among those who are always looking to shave a couple seconds off their commuting time.” (core77)

Selectism - Bailey Rudie Stingy Brim Fedoras

Two great fedoras from Bailey made exclusively for Epaulet in Brooklyn. “Epaulet and Bailey hats present an exclusive collaborative fedora – the ‘Rudie.’ Designed with a stingy 1 1/2″ snap brim, classic 1960’s crown, and slim grosgrain hat band, the Rudie is that perfect old-school fedora that can be worn with a suit & tie or a polo & denim. It’s handmade in Pennsylvania of ‘LiteFelt’ – a durable virgin wool that’s ‘crushable’ (it can be folded lengthwise) and Teflon-coated for water and stain resistance.” Throw in a genuine peacock feather and we’re good.

Perrelet Chronographs

Selectism - Perrelet Split-Seconds Chronographs

Something about the Regulatuer Retrograde from Perrelet’s chronograph family is appealing. There is a certain loss of modernity in these timepieces which remind me of “Wonderland” style windups. Exaggerated numbers and letter against a plain face make this model. These “split-seconds chronograph represents the innovative nature of the Perrelet brand. Watchmaking enthusiasts will appreciate the elegance of the finish on the glass discs which has taken the place of traditional hands, resulting in the perfect harmony between tradition and modernity.” Not for all but hopefully for some.
