“Art of the Trench”

Selectism - Art of the Trench

“Art of the Trench” is Burberry’s latest social media endeavor. The site, found at artoftrench.com, celebrates the “iconic” Burberry trench coat through a vast collection of photos that show their trench prominently on individuals in the real world settings – the streets, of course. “For the launch of the site, Burberry Creative Director Christopher Bailey commissioned a collection of photographs of trench coats wearers taken by photographer Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist. For this first collaboration, Scott has been capturing street portraits of people in Burberry trench coats in London, Milan, New York, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo and Venice over the last few months.”

Saji Magazine

Selectism - Saji Magazine

I met Saji Magazine’s Miho through various friends while in Tokyo. Miho is a full-time food and cuisine photographer. Saji is an extension of her work. While she considers it more of a hobby at the moment, Saji is clearly a unique publication that focuses in on education of fine foods with excellent photography set in a environment that will be familiar to most. Saji is about the love of food, art, and fashion mixed in with recipes that will tempt you away from the fast food alternatives – it is a return to food. Saji available through finer outlets worldwide.

Garbstore Spring/Summer 2010 Naval Trousers

Here’s another drop from Garbstore’s SS10 collection. It still feels odd for us to making preparations for next summer when we still haven’t bought our ‘fits’ for winter yet, but that’s fashion. Made from canvas weave linen denim and based on a 1940’s piece from the French navy (hence the name), these will be a great halfway house between denim and chinos. As you’d expect, it’s made to the usual high standards Garbstore are known for. Availability wise, these will drop around January at all the usual suspects.

Jin Kuramoto “Life Chair”

selectism - Jin Kuramoto "Life Chair"

There’s a pleasant trend in furniture design toward paired down utilitarian seating furniture. Jin Kuramoto’s “Life Chair,” is one example. He’s devised this based on experiences with “mundane” chairs in the countryside. These finds are stripped to basic elements and devoid of overly ambitious design.

While this is a pleasant notion, there is much charm and ambition within the history of country furniture, so getting caught up in a city vs. country battle is a touch out of order. However, Kuramoto’s chair has a strong shift in angle as the stile rises up into the crest rail, giving enough movement to make it anything but mundane despite its simplistic aspiration. (via DB).

Damir Doma Bomber Jacket

selectism - damir-doma-bomber-jacket-01

Whilst 99% of Damir Doma’s is available in the western hemisphere, here’s one piece we can only find in Japan. Doma has used this pattern before on blazers, but we think it’s put to better use on this bomber jacket. A jacket like this would ensure you wouldn’t need to try too hard with the rest of the outfit; just put on a polo (like the one we just reccomended!), some chinos/cords/jeans and trainers and you’re good to go. Sometimes we like things simple. (Mindtrive)

As always, detailed images after that leap.

Photographing Fashion: British Style in the Sixties

selectism - Photographing Fashion: British Style in the Sixties

Photographing Fashion Photographing Fashion: British Style in the Sixties is the result of opening one of Britain’s largest photographic archives. For many years, fashion editor Ernestine Carter commissioned photographs for use in The Sunday Times. At the hands of author Richard Lester, the archives become the launching pad for a full study of fashion and style in the 1960s. Lester chooses images ranging from the ball room to the beach, with an emphasis on portraiture. All of the photographs appearing in this volume have not seen public eye since their original newsprint run. (via Retro to Go).

Calabrese Duffle Bag

selectism - calabrese-duffle-bag-01

We’re noted fans of the backpack. We still like our totes, messengers and briefcases, but backpacks are really floating our boats these days. So here’s another one for you (or us) to add to the team. It’s a simple but effective style, taking the vintae feel that most want from a rucksack and updating it with some heavy duty canvas and useful compartments. We wouldn’t want to carry too much in it though, we’re pretty sure the ropes would really dig in after a while. (Oi Polloi)

Take a look at detailed shots after the leap.

Kitsune Polo Shirt

selectism - kitsune-polo-shirt-01

Another (not so) bold prediction – Polo’s are due for a comeback next season. We’ve seen enough of them about to think that people will be reconsidering  them in a season or two. So why not get a head start with this Kitsune polo? It’ll look great done up to the top button (we know there’s four buttons on this, but don’t go further than two undone. The line between preppy cool and cheesy lothario is surprisingly thin). (Studio Homme)

Detailed images after the leap.
