Kolor Spring/Summer 2010

03 November 2009, 18.30 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - kolor-spring-2010-01

Eschewing seasonal collections, Kolor continues their focus on ’sophisticated comfort’. Their SS10 colllection embodies that philosophy, featuring wide leg chinos, trousers, relaxed jackets and jogging bottoms. Their loafers are accomplished for a company only entering their second season of footwear. The fulfill their duty of complimenting the main collection and being desirable pieces on their own. Blazers are Kolor’s calling card and this season is no different; focusing on relaxed, crumpled blazers that’d be suitable for wear well into the spring season.

Take a look at the rest of the collection after the leap.

H By Harris Nubuck Leather Shopper Bag

03 November 2009, 16.30 | Posted in Accessories | No comments »

selectism - h-by-harris-shopper-01Here’s another H By Harris pieces that’d benefit from being able to give it a good feel up. As you may know, nubuck leather is strokably soft – perfect for heavy petting. And at the price (£190) it’s a nice entry level piece for those H fans who don’t quite have the money to drop on one of his quilted jacket/backpack combos. The shape might not be butch enough for the dullards, but we’re sure you fashion forward folks could pull it off. (Browns)

Song remains the same, detailed images after the leap.

The Champions League Gets a Type Lift

selectism - The Champions League Gets a Type Lift

For the past 12 years, The Champions League has employed a traditional serif typeface. Things are changing, as creative agency Radiant Studios charged Fontsmith to update the type on both the League logo and corporate typeface. For inspiration, Fontsmith drew from the curves of the logo’s stars, incorporating them into the final product (”a modern, slightly quirky sans serif”). This typeface comes in regular, bold, and a condensed headline weight. From now, it will work as the exclusive of The Champions League. (via Creative Review).

Journal Standard Toggle Cardigan

selectism - journal-standard-cardigan-01

Everybody’s in love with toggles this season. We’ve seen a fair few cardies with toggles on them, but this JS one stands out from the crowd. It’s not just the toggles, it’s not just the shawl collar and it’s not just the cable knit-esque pattern. It’s the combination of all three. If we had to pick a bone, we’d make the toggles beige or tan, but that’s just us being finicky. Like most JS pieces, you’ll need a proxy to get on this. (Style Cruise)

Crescent Down Works Down Shirt/Jacket

03 November 2009, 11.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - crescent-down-works-down-shirtShirt or jacket? That’s the question everyone (and we mean everyone) is asking themselves about this piece. We’d play it safe and call it a slim jacket. It’s not as if anyone’s about to start to wearing this with no undershirt, are they? So this jacket is perfect for the folks who like a bit of puffa action, but not a lot of it. It’s basically a watered-down down jacket (excuse the awful play on words). If you were to compare down jackets to music, this’d be the UB40 of down jackets – just enough to give the consumer a taste, but not so much that they get offended. (South Willard)

01. 88 Bikes
“As Kiva and other microfinancing groups show, philanthropy can be tailored to any size and still make an impact. When Dan Austin, a writer, filmmaker and cycling enthusiast first met children in a Cambodian orphanage in 2006, he wanted nothing more than to give them a taste of the exuberant feeling of freedom known to every suburban American kid. So he figured out a way to give them bikes.” (design observer).

02. In Conversation with Terrence Blanchard
“About twenty years ago, when he was writing the music for Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever, his first film score, trumpeter Terence Blanchard took a hiatus from a successful career—at 28, he could already look back on a four-year stint with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and several years with the contemporaneously influential quintet he co-led with alto saxophonist Donald Harrison—to change his embouchure.” (Jazz)

03. Neil Simon’s ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ Closes in a Week – What Went Wrong?

“… comedy is changing on Broadway, and on Sunday one of Mr. Simon’s most-produced plays in the last 25 years, “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” became one of the biggest commercial flops on Broadway in recent memory. It closed a week after it opened, shocking many in the theater world, not least the writer himself.” (NYT)

04. The Two Sides of Lionel Messi (Above)

“The candidates were announced last week for the Fifa World Player of the Year award. Am I the only one out there who’s not too interested? My problem with the thing is that this concentration on the individual can tend to overshadow one of the fundamental truths of the game – the stars shine brightest when the collective balance of the team is right.” (BBC)

Selectism - Mountain Research Cashmere Collars

Ah, yes. Mountain Research. Well, I’m not posting up about the Officer’s Jacket which they make. It is a common style parka jacket, but what makes it special is the optional zip in cashmere collar. Available in ivory or charcoal grey, the collar offers your neckine the comfort of a cashmere sweater in a down parka.

Selectism - Richard Kidd for (NON)PLUS T-Shirts

Noise music and Wolf Eyes will usually get right to heart. (NON)PLUS down in Mexico is an “(NON) PLUS” Guerrilla web store, tv-channel and garment manufactory. Mexican based avant-garde studio is offering development and deconstruction of garments, 100% made in Mexico.” They have recently received some stock of Richard Kidd t-shirts which we’re told are exclusive to (Non)Plus. While the price point is up there, the line itself may appeal to some readers. Now, back to Wolf Eyes

Tokyo | Buzz Roll Eyeglass Frames

Selectism - Buzz Roll Eyeglass Frames

I’m about to go broke this in city. I think everyone passing through says the same, but one area where the Japan/Asian market somehow stays reasonable is in the eyeglass department. So while I’m here, I may as well do some frame hunting. I found the brand Buzz Roll through a small shop in Harajuku. The line is handmade in Sabae which is the optical capital of Japan. They ran me around 151$US which is a damn reasonable price for frames. May I add that the lenses they put in are some of the best optics I have looked through? No distortion field on the sides even with my heavy script.

I picked up a pair in matte black finish. I haven’t seen a frame in this color before. They’re thick, sturdy, and as the wooden display box says, “Made with Love” (in Japanese of course). Glass-1/one sells them online it would seem.
