Selectism - 1959 Aston Martin DBR1 Cufflinks

More cufflink love. Luxist one ups our Movember mustache cufflinks with these Aston Martin DBR1 cuffers (Movember’s were of course for charity). “”UK-based TMB Art Metal is launching a limited edition set of cufflinks handmade from metal taken from the Aston Martin DBR1 race car that won Le Mans and the World Sportscar Championships in 1959. TMB’s exclusive Aston Martin DBR1/2 Essence of Form links are crafted using original pieces of aluminum body panel removed from the the famous car that was driven by Carroll Shelby, and was victorious with Sir Stirling Moss behind the wheel in the 1959 World Sportscar Championship.”

Selectism - Nano Universe Wool Check Tote Bags

It’s Black Friday so gifting is on the mind. We found these wool check tote bags from Nano Universe. They’re listed as being for women but they could be more of a unisex accessory. If you believe them to be more for the women, consider gifting you mother, sister, or your favorite barista. One of you will use it daily – then again, only you can decide. (zozo)

Selectism - Postman Boots

Klang took some photos of this interesting pair of boots at Our Legacy. Postal stamps give these suede boots a treatment which has been worked onto other products before. All in all an interesting look, though it is tough to tell how they’ll hold up once they hit some rain. I assume they’ll fall off like postage stamps.

Selectism Q&A | Rachel Comey

selectism - rachel-comey-interview

We recently caught up with one of our favourite shoe designers, Rachel Comey. Whilst she’s known to the menswear blogosphere for her great line of shoes, she also creates a critically acclaimed womenswear range. What we love about Comey’s shoes is the fact that they’re inspired by classic styles as opposed to just replicating them. Take a leap to read about her background, why she loves men’s shoes and her top 9 picks for men’s footwear.

Ladybird Mug: Bicycle

selectism - Ladybird Mug: Bicycle

Wondering through the Conran shop last Sunday I spotted The Story of the Bicycle mug. Having been forced to read Ladybird books for hours on end as a youth, the illustrations have an instant hook. The other benefit of these, aside from nostalgia, is size. The mugs are massive and perfect for those us with enormous caffeine requirements (i.e. Jeff and I). As ridiculous as it may seem, these bloody mugs really work for me. Can’t decide if I should be pleased or embarrassed. Yet, on the off chance that someone else gets some joy from them, I’ve decided to share.

The story of the bicycle, football and cricket are included in the new Ladybird Archive Collection. They are a decent gift… especially for those who were required to prove literacy by reading allowed these vary books. Available from Conran.

Gloverall Spring/Summer 2010 Nylon Duffle

selectism - gloverall-spring-2010-02

‘You’ll smell like a wet dog’ and ‘just wait till it rains’ – just a couple of phrases you’ll hear wearing a duffle in wet weather. Gloverall have decided to sort that out with this red SS10 nylon edition, which will obviously be immune to the pitfalls of the wool version. While CDG shirt made a great nylon duffle for AW09, we like the idea of a company like Gloverall taking chances like this. If we had to be finicky, we’d say that we could do with a few more colourways – but that’s just us being overly picky.

Bass ‘Larson’ Penny Loafer

selectism - bass-penny-loafers

Penny loafers have been creeping back into fashion for yonks now but it still looks like they’ll remain on the outskirts for another season or two – good news for folks like us. It means shoes like these Bass loafers will remain reasonably priced (£85 at the time of asking) and immune from the collab-fever that everyone’s catching. They’re also a nice sharp alternative to the boat shoe and show off just enough sock to justify wearing a brightly coloured pair. (Edwards of Manchester) Read more

Smoker Bench

selectism - Smoker Bench

Even though I am regularly keen on design focused for specific segments on the population (cyclists, bus riders, etc), items conceived for smokers never quite grab me. Take this “Smoker Bench,” for example, while not unpleasant it certainly doesn’t fill the smoker with joy and prompt exclamations of “by god, they’ve given me what I need and want as a marginalized human.” They’ve given a place to stow finished butts and a sad tease of grass. Thankfully I’ve not found a designers statement noting the grass as a method of offsetting a cigarette smokers pollutants. (via Industrial Design Served).

A secondary view after the jump.

Farfetch 121 | B Store

27 November 2009, 11.30 | Posted in interview | No comments »

selectism - b-store-interview-01

Farfetch have a nice interview up with Matthew Murphy and Kirk Beattie of boutique/label B Store. The interview mainly focuses on B Store’s own line, asking them about their past, present and where they’re going. An interesting answer was when the Murphy and Beattie were asked about what inspired the B store clothing launch. They replied:

The concept was to offer a collection of basic, traditional, utilitarian designed staples for a modern man’s wardrobe. In response to the success of European labels such as APC and ACNE – which both offer their vision of timeless basics – we wanted to create a brand that sat with these contemporaries, but with a decidedly English feel.
