Oil-less Turkey Fryer

26 November 2009, 20.00 | Posted in tools | No comments »

Selectism - Oil-less Turkey Fryer

Every year in North America, humans attempt to deep fry turkeys. They taste amazing when done properly. Problem is that deep frying a turkey is incredibly dangerous if you do not use the proper hardware. Frontgate sells an oil-less turkey fryer which may save a few lives. As Gizmodo tells it, “The Oil-less Turkey Fryer solves all of these issues, cooking with propane while blasting the turkey with infrared to make a crispy, succulent 16-pound bird at 8 to 10 minutes a pound. Of course, there is one catch to this $199 oil-less fryer…it doesn’t technically fry.” Happy Thaksgiving to those celebrating.

Thanksgiving Card

Selectism - Thanksgiving Card

Suka Creative worked the production of this Thanksgiving holiday card for a client. It is a trend it would seem for people to send out alternative holiday cards – skipping Christmas cards for example. Some background on the design of the card. “My first idea was to design a single fold card, that when closed would read as one message and when opened revealed another message. You know, kind of like the secret decoder rings that you get in a Kracker Jack box. After tons of exploration and in taking with my creative director Brian Wong, he suggested using a colored vellum envelope and making the card more like a postcard rather than a greeting card. It took a lot of trials and errors to find the right colors that would create the “secret message” effect but still have a Thanksgiving feel to them.” Love the letterpress work on this one. (fyc)

Robert Frank’s “The Americans”

26 November 2009, 18.50 | Posted in Art | No comments »

curated mag - Robert Frank's "The American's"

Robert Frank’s The Americans opened at the MET in late September and I had the opportunity to walk through last month. It remains on view until January 3, 2010, and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the suite of photographs Frank produced during a cross-country road trip in the mid-1950s. Criticized at time of publication, the 83 images that make up The Americans eventually soon were recognized as masterpieces of street photography. They are honest depictions of everyday life from the hardships of the South to the glamor of Hollywood. Highly recommended (kicking myself for forgetting to mention this until now).

A Funeral – St. Helena, South Carolina (1955) is above. A few more examples after the jump. (via Curated).

Nudie Spring/Summer 2010 Holdall

26 November 2009, 16.30 | Posted in Accessories | No comments »

selectism - nudie-spring-2010-bag.jpg

Here’s a little snippet from Nudie’s SS10 collection. Nudie’s been making decent outerwear pieces for a while but this is the first bag we’ve seen from them. We haven’t seen this in person yet, but we’d guess that it’s overnight bag size as opposed to a weekender. The outside zip is a nice touch as well, making sure you won’t have to spend your time fumbling inside your bag for your camera, keys or phone. Available in Nudie stockists from January.

Steven Alan Mariner Peacoat

selectism - steven-alan-peacoat

Despite the amount of expensive products we feature, we love a bargain just as much as anyone else. So when we heard news of Steven Alan’s sale via the tweetvine we had to check it out. One of our favourite pieces is this mariner peacoat, which we managed to miss during the regular season. The shade of green is pretty fetching and would match up well with either tan or burgundy cords or some good ol’ indigo denim. You’ll have to be quick though – there’s only an XL left at the moment. Alejandro Ingelmo Spring/Summer 2010

Consider this a ‘reporting not recommending’ post. Sometimes people have off days, bad nights or whatever. We’ll just assume that Ingelmo had an off night when he made this collection. The closest we can come to compliment it that it is interesting – just not in a good way. As you’ve guessed by now, we’re not fans but we’ve put it up in case anyone disagrees.

See the rest of the collection after the leap.

Selectism - Landmine Ketchup

01. Rapper Slick Rick’s Diamond Encrusted Eye Patch Sold At Auction

“Among the lots of music-related memorabilia auctioned by esteemed Phillips de Pury was the multicolor camouflage eye patch designed by rapper Slick Rick’s wife. Slick Rick’s legend precedes him like no other, for he foreshadowed the pimpster attitude of many blinged celebrities of his era with his gold chains…” (bornrich)

02. Unilever Headquarters

“The new Unilever headquarter building for Germany, Austria and Switzerland is located right by the river Elbe in Hamburg’s HafenCity. It marks the end of the route out of the town centre to Hamburg’s new attractions: the cruise ship terminal and the promenade on Strandkai. Here Unilever’s new building opens itself up to the city and its inhabitants. The central element and heart of the design is the generous atrium, flooded by daylight…” (archdaily)

03.  Landmine Ketchup (above)

“”Using a ketchup sachet, we demonstrated the horrific nature of living in a land mine affected country and how much a part of everyday life that horror is. The idea is simple: as you tear open the sachet you also rip through the child’s leg and the ketchup inside pours out like blood.” (dieline)

04. Muji and Lego Collaborate

“Muji, minimalist makers of everything under the sun, have teamed up with everyone’s favorite toy Lego to create new creative packs that are distinctly in touch with their brand. These sets feel like they’re more in the spirit of how Legos used to be, strictly based on a persons creativity. Nowadays all you see on the shelves are packed sets with instructions on how to make something, which to me takes all the fun out of it.” (+kn)

Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Power Drill

26 November 2009, 00.38 | Posted in tools | 2 comments »

Selectism - Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Powerdrill

This is a serious post. I purchased my first Bosch 14.4v compact power drill Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Power Drill while rehabbing a house back in 2004. For the size and price, nothing will beat nor outlasts this drill in getting things done. It is my favorite power tool – hands down.

About a month ago I lost my Bosch drill. I am pretty certain it was lost in a major car accident I had. Vehicle was a total loss. I could have gone out and bought any other drill, but this Bosch had treated me so well, that I felt no need to acquire any other make nor model. Today it arrived. While it may not be made in Mexico any longer (now in Malaysia), and it includes a massive new charger,  it is still worth every last dollar I spent on it. High recommended on this pre Turkey Day. A real man’s holiday gift. Serious business. Amazon Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Power Drill has it for 149$US.
