From 1957 to 1965 photographer W. Eugene Smith ran his apartment at 821 Sixth Avenue as something of a jazz salon (this following a nervous breakdown). With an open door policy, Smith entertained hoards of jazz musicians and artists. The resulting photographs and recordings form an important and engaging portrait of an era. Thanks to documentation Sam Stephenson, The Jazz Loft Project
unearths the riches lefts behind by Smith and creates a rich cultural tableaux highlighting the genius of the bebop era.
