
By this time we’ve all seen the trailer for Tom Ford’s A Single Man (check it here if you have not). A fan of the film, Mr. Ford, and design, decided to give the poster art a second glance. As ck/ck tells us, “Whenever I’m feeling uninspired I like to make movie posters to get my creative juices going again. It always works.” It sure does. (ianc)

This isn’t good design. Design is about communication, and this tells you nothing about what the movie is about. You could put this on a Woody Allen movie, and it’d be more appropriate. This design is a face-value mimicry of a costume. It’s a bad impressionist getting his five minute set at last call.

The design does communicate something – a void, a shell of a person, someone who is defined by outward facing artifacts. I haven’t seen the movie, just the trailer, but that’s what this poster says to me and I don’t believe it’s incongruous with what the trailer itself communicates about the movie’s tone.
The sparse nature of this design is as much a tool for communication as any literal overly-produced photo montage poster. Given the ubiquity of movie trailers and information available online a poster design, particularly one created in the context of the web, doesn\’t need to communicate in the same way a billboard or subway poster needs to. I find this design so refreshing and tasteful, much closer to what I would expect from someone with such refined taste as Tom Ford.
