“Int|Ar” Interior Architecture Journal

selectism - "Int|Ar" Interior Architecture Journal

A new annual publication from the Rhode Island School of Design’s Department of Interior Architecture, Int|Ar certainly isn’t the only journal dedicated to interior design. However, it separates itself in focus with its inaugural issue. The theme, “Interventions/Adaptive Reuse” grants scholarly attention to rehabs and functional modification.

Released for autumn 2009, the issue was funded by a RISD Professional Development Grant. Available from the risd:store, Int|Ar might make the perfect holiday gift for the picky design buff in your family.

La Cordonnerie Anglaise Grooming Box

We’re just gonna come out and say it – we hate gift guides. How can someone who doesn’t even know you advise you your partner wants for Christmas? That’s why we’re not advising this shoe grooming box for everyone, just for the fella who loves his shoes (and if he’s heard of this site, he’s sure to have some appreciation for fine footwear). At £305, it’s for lovers only; Those in new relationships are better off just getting a fancy shoe horn, we’ll appreciate it all the same. (Bureau)

A look at all the components of the box after the leap.

Original Penguin Pop-Up Store in Berlin

selectism - original-penguin-berlin-store-01

‘What? So and so had a pop up store and it’s closed already?’ is a phrase we’re too used to hearing this year. There’s been so many this year that we’re not even sure of the right word to describe it. Flood? Deluge? Torrent? Tsunami? However you want to describe it, the point remains the same: there’s been too many this year.

Having said that (word to Curb), this pop up store benefits from being open for longer than the usual pop ups – it runs longer than two weeks for one – and it’s based in Berlin boutique Trüffelschwein. So if you’re in Berlin anytime soon, pop in and take a look around.

I.D. Magazine Closes Down

16 December 2009, 11.30 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

selectism - id-magazine

This news has been doing the twitter rounds, but a magazine of I.D’s magazines deserves a little more than 140 characters. I.D Magazine (not to be confused with UK fashion title i-D) has been around since 1954, officially making it the oldest design magazine in the US. Their publisher, Gary Lynch, issued a statement where he laid out just why the magazine is shutting down:

“Ceasing publication of an iconic brand like I.D. is never an easy decision, but there are several forces that have worked against its sustainability. Certainly the downturn in print advertising has contributed to this decision, but other factors include the fragmentation and specialized information needs of I.D.’s core readers (product designers) and the plethora of information resources available to them – some for free (online and B2B) and others that are highly specialized and targeted to specific industries served.”

Their annual design review is set to continue and there will be an expanded online edition. (Fast Company)

01. Bacon Christmas Ornaments Put the Oink Back in Christmas

“Here’s a great way to dress up the old Christmas tree: Bacon Christmas Ornaments ($12.00 for 6 on Etsy, with hooks). Unfortunately, the seller can’t guarantee Christmas delivery if you order it now… but there’s always next year! Or maybe it will be a Christmas miracle and you’ll get them on time.” (eatme)

02. Video | Between the Folds Documentary (above)

“Between the Folds chronicles the stories of ten fine artists and intrepid theoretical scientists who have abandoned careers and scoffed at hard-earned graduate degrees — all to forge unconventional lives as modern-day paperfolders.” Airing on PBS in the United States on December 20th 10p EST. (kottke)

03. Calendria

“Continuing the tradition of providing an annual calendar, Elizabeth Daggar from Electrofork set out to create a map — something she wanted to do for a while — by combining screen shots of the two hemispheres of earth: one containing North and Central America, the other displaying Europe, the Near East and the Northern portion of Africa. This afforded both the scale and a motley of shapes as starting point. You can see how this map came to be on the site she created for the calendar, where juicy sketches are also included.” (fpo)

04. F*** The Rain Umbrella

“Designed by Anton Schnaider, this has to be the ultimate umbrella for those, like me, who are fed up with the excessive rain we have been having lately here in good old Blighty.” (ianc)

Freitag for DAS MAGAZIN R099 WYSS Messenger Tote

Selectism - Freitag for DAS MAGAZIN R099 WYSS Messenger Tote

Switzerland’s DAS MAGAZIN works a great bag collaboration with their Swiss family at Freitag. The R099 WYSS Messenger Tote is a reporter bag that is inspired by late 1800’s horse messenger bags. It is made from vintage unicolored truck tarpaulins which translates into oil, dirt, and road wear free, truck tarps. This is a great looking bag which is as simple and subtle a product as Freitag has ever produced. A unicolor palette will do that. I love the bag but it may work better for the woman in your life.

Leather Man Ltd. Hoof Pick Belt

Selectism - Leather Man Ltd. Hoof Pick Belt

This may come  as a shock but many of those employed by Titel Media (you know – that name we give to the umbrella we work under) are from Connecticut. I’m from the center of the State but others reside near the coastal waters once famous for their tales and battles with whales and waterbeasts. We all loved the Whalers. The days…

One of the better belt companies in Essex, CT is the Leather Man Ltd. house which has been outputting belts since the later 60’s. Today we’re profiling their “Hoof Pick Belt.” The solid brass buckle is a bright gold color when new, but tarnishes down to a subtle, dull bronze after several days of wear. This is truly built to last. Hickoree’s has had has them again.
