Selectism - Twitter Giveaway | Herman Miller Select Walnut Spinning Top Set

It’s the holiday season and with the help of some friendly brands and supporters of Selectism, we are giving away  a bunch of great items from now through the end of the year through the Selectism Twitter feed. We’ll start if off with this excellent Herman Miller Select Walnut Spinning Top Set. As mentioned the when we first covered this spinning top set, “Eames was fond of games, as you’ll guess, as a method of relaxation and beginnings to creative work. These tops are inspired by Eames, if not purely in aesthetic then by thought. Beautifully formed from walnut, they are designed by Klein Reid.”

We’ve made it pretty easy to enter and win.

Follow Selectism on Twitter and tweet the following message:  Follow @selectism and RT this message by Dec 7 for a chance to win a Herman Miller Select Spinning Top Set http://bit.ly/4OG4qP

We’ll randomly choose a retweet as the winner on Dec 8th. Good luck.

Selectism - Sponsor Note | Equinox's Music and Tech

There is a refreshing focus on the individual at Equinox Health Clubs that goes well beyond the locker room floor and group programs. Their technology and creative departments work just as hard to offer members personalized options that integrate their workouts with their online and mobile tools and their music.

For example: MYEQ. Equinox’s technology department has been hard at work in bringing reservation tools for their members that go beyond the traditional signup. With the MYEQ iPhone application, Equinox members can not only easily check in to their member club, they can also reserve their favorite bike for a spinning class, view schedules, and import them into your favorite calendar application.

As your time becomes more and more of a premium, MYEQ ensures you’ll have access to your equipment when you need it. No health club makes it easier to stay connected. With your iPhone app keeping you in order, it’s time to get your playlist ready for your workouts. Feel free to set up a playlist before you step into the Equinox club, but if you’re looking for some new sounds be sure to explore their “EQ Sessions.”

“EQ Sessions,” is a collection of curated music selections from well known artists including Laroux (you know the Skream remix), Stevie Knicks, Madonna, and many others. Don’t have an iPhone? All good. The “EQ Sessions” are also available through their online MYEQ site. From personalized web and mobile tools to music and playlists, Equinox caters to the members and that’s how it should be. Readers, get a no-cost three day guest pass at any Equinox club in your city and experience it for yourself.

Selectism - Porter for Baxter of California Dopp Bag

Baxter of California, the men’s grooming company, clearly know that running with Japan’s Porter bag line will do your brand right.  ”The bag is made of the signature Porter nylon material, zips open to reveal three inner removable compartment bags, elastic nylon bands to hold travel essentials, and an outer zip compartment as well. The bag carries the traditional head porter woven label, here in a Baxter Blue color for the collaboration, with additional Baxter logo marks on the inside and blue nylon contrasts on the bags interior.” You’ll find 2oz travel sized versions of their goods inside. Expect to drop 250$US on the travel bag kit when it hits select doors.

KVA has just released images of his SS10 accessories online and, as you’d expect, it’s a doozy. Backpacks, key rings and belts all make an appearance but the footwear is the star of the show. Ranging from desert boots to high tops to high top sandals, these demonstrate his flair for footwear (excuse the alliteration).

Take a look at the rest of the collection after the leap.

Chairs | A Book by Judith Miller

selectism - Chairs | A Book by Judith Miller

There are a great number of books about chairs. My own shelves strain from heavy volumes on American Windsors Chairs, the designs of Hepplewhite, and the work of Gustav Stickley. Some of these books are better than others, and while the minutia of distinct turning and the thrill of discovering that a round tenon has been used to adhere the crest rail to stile excites me to no end, I realize that to most it is utter tedium.

Chairs, however, do have some universal appeal. Since most fans of design are not complete nerds, books like Chairs Chairs | A Book by Judith Miller by Judith Miller, which combine beautiful photographs and chronological introductions to major styles and innovations, are well suited. Miller’s new volume covers 400 years of chair design. Wainscot Chairs share space with Marc Newson, and Miller’s own love and knowledge of antiques supposedly comes through in sound contextual snippets.

Judith Miller has been collecting antiques since the 1960s. Chairs is out from Conran Octopus.

Available now through Amazon Chairs | A Book by Judith Miller .

Pictures of chairs follow.

Edwin Spring/Summer 2010 Ready to Wear

selectism - Edwin Spring/Summer 2010 Ready to Wear

Complementing the well known denim offerings, Edwin’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection takes cues from the sea and from classics of shirting and outerwear. While not quite as exciting as the collaborative venture with Folk, the pieces are focused and simple. Ready to wear is a new direction for the brand, and in it there is an attempt to meld the rugged connotations of denim with a look inspired by proper “maritime” activity.

Above and after the jump are selections from Edwin’s look book of lifestyle shots for Spring/Summer 2010. I’ve included some of the ladies line on the grounds that I find the model to be super cute.

Uniqlo Premium Down Coat

01 December 2009, 14.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - uniqlo-premium-down-coat-02

Every season there’s a Uniqlo piece that tends to take the interwebz by storm. Last season it was the oxford and the vintage chino the season before that. This time it’s set to be their premium down coat.

Down coats are always a tricky affair; it’s very easy to end up channelling the Michellin Man. Uniqlo have got it just right with their deceptively cheap – £50 right now, £70 usually – down coat. There’s more than a whiff of Cabourn in the orange coat, but that’s no bad thing. (Uniqlo)

Mjolk for Lens hooded Pea Coat

selectism - mjolk-lens-hooded-pea-coat

With January sales looming, we can’t fully recommend buying full price purchases. Why bother when it’ll all be half price in a couple of weeks? But, with that being said, there are usually a few pieces that run the risk of selling out before the sale hits – and everyone’s got at least one non-buyers remorse story to tell.

Given the attractive pricing (£100 at the time of asking) this could easily turn into another of those ‘I ummed and aahed for too long’ tales for anyone too hesitant to pull the trigger. (Topman)
