Zoetrope Magazine

selectism - zoetrope-magazine

The newest member of Stack’s magazine list, Zoetrope is a quarterly literary magazine published by Francis Ford Coppola. Focusing on short stories, each issue is designed by a leading artist. As you’d expect with a Coppola backed magazine, the designers and contributor list reads like a who’s who of popular culture.

Previous designers include David Bowie, Tom Waits, Gus Van Sant and Lou Reed whilst editorial contributors consist of the likes of Woody Allen, Wes Anderson and Ethan Coen. It’s pretty hard to get hold of outside the US, so we’d advise buying it direct or signing up to Stack (an amazing gift for the magazine lover in your life). (Zoetrope)

Selectism - Test Pattern Clock

01. Give to the Red Cross for Haiti

“American Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern traveled to Haiti today to visit relief operations and help coordinate the distribution of aid.” (redcross)

02. Biker-centered Design In Denmark

“The City of Copenhagen has implemented this double railing simply as a convenience for the cyclists who stop here. A high railing to grasp with your hand and a foot railing for putting your foot up, if that’s what you fancy doing. Either way you can also use the railing to push off when the light changes.” (core77)

03. Elekit Tube Amplifier

“This gorgeous piece of hardware is the Elekit Tube Amplifier, designed by Koichi Futatsumata. I’ve always been obsessed with tube amps but I’ve never seen one look this good. Of course, it would look best if the rest of your furniture is of a similar spec — which is not the case for me — but maybe this is so amazing that it can elevate even the most drab of living spaces with its sexy minimalism.”  (iso50)

04. Test Pattern Clock (above)

“Beep, from Things of Colour, is a test-pattern style wallclock with integral retro style flip-clock mechanism.” (ic)

01. Paul McCartney: ‘I nearly joined Them Crooked Vultures instead of John Paul Jones’
“Paul McCartney has revealed he asked about joining Them Crooked Vultures on bass, only to be told by Dave Grohl that John Paul Jones had already beaten him to it.” (NME)

02. Warren Ellis: The Road And The Trials Of The Soundtrack
“Warren Ellis talks to Luke Turner about his soundtrack work with Nick Cave, and the pressures and pains of working in the film industry.” (The Quietus)

03. Ghostface, Jay Electronica & Talib Kweli to Play Free Diabetes Benefit Concert
“Ghostface Killah, Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli and Consequence are just a few of the rappers that will be hitting the stage next week in Brooklyn to help raise awareness for diabetes.” (XXL)

04. Garance Dore at Pitti Uomo (pictured)
Sometimes I wonder what exactly I’m looking for traveling all the time. Scott was asking me, “Come to Pitti*!” and I was all, “No. I want to get home… What am I going to do there? There’s no where for me to go. It’s not my scene. It’s not my style.” And he said, “But we’ll be together!”

Aaaaaah… If you’re gonna sweet talk me like that… Of course, I went. (Garance Dore)

selectism - (capsule) | Jansport Urban Framework

Jan Sport unveiled their newest collection, the Urban Framework, today at (capsule) NY. The Urban Framework collection pays homage to the brands classic outdoor day and hiking packs, giving them new life with a new poly denim finish. The fabric is TPE coated and accented by brass zippers and logo plate. All the core packs from JanSport’s heritage line are used – from the 1970s Kegger to the Vail Ski Patrol Pack first introduced in 1972 – making it pretty exhaustive as far as baggage needs are concerned.

The collection will filter into stores over the summer. Check it in full after the jump.

Selectism - Woolrich Woolen Mills Autumn/Winter 2010

Some first looks from the Woolrich Woolen Mills Autumn/Winter 2010 presentation today in Milan. We give credit to Suzuki for calling out his bold inspirations. “Daiki Suzuki’s Fall/Winter 2010 Woolrich Woolen Mills line, is a parade of blacks and blues. Influenced by both the stark colors from late 1970’s and early 80’s designer labels like Comme des Garcons— an aesthetic he grew up with and learned much from—as well as his passion for Americana and Woolrich hunting plaids, Daiki Suzuki searched for a common ground and created a wholly new style that could be called ‘Dark Hunting’ or ‘Hunting Noir.’”

This season, it’s the Bottega Man as part Teddy Boy, part Jerry Lee Lewis, and 100 percent hell-raiser.”

Selectism - Vivienne Westwood Autumn 2010

WWD gives their view of Vivienne Westwood Autumn 2010 collection. “The iconoclastic British designer’s latest unlikely fashion hero is the vagrant, who inspired a gutsy blend of artfully worn-in leather coats, layered chunky knitwear, stained denim and slouchy wool suits.”  Note the heavy denim and things to come with Westwood and future collaborations.
