Selectism - Giuliano Fujiwara Autumn/Winter 2010

The Fashionisto gives his take on the “This season, Giuliano Fujiwara offers genius proportions and a compelling scope of crimson accompanied by great vitality. Not afraid to push the envelope, Fujiwara’s dynamic looks are constructed from unassuming knits that are countered by structured outerwear and bold leather numbers. Playing a softer hand, skirts of varying lengths work well with Fujiwara’s expanding proportions to wrap up a pristine collection for the romantic wardrobe undercut by a modern grunge that demonstrates vulnerability.”

Garbstore Striped Collar Polo Shirt

selectism - garbstore-polo-shirts-02

Continuing our theme of pieces that never-went-out-of-style-but-are-still-making-a- comeback, here’s a Garbstore polo shirt. The polo resurgence has been coming on strong with the likes of Casely-Hayford and Band of Outsiders all turning their hands to a version (and that’s not counting Fred Perry, who never stopped making them). What we really like about this polo is the striped collar, which ensures that it’ll look lively when teamed with some fetching knitwear. And it’s on sale (£43.50) if you needed an excuse to splurge. Altadena Works Tear Drop Backpack

First high tops, now backpacks. Streetwear’s influence on classic menswear is underrated, but the return of the backpack is a sure sign that designers do have at least half an eye on the street. Albam have just taken stock of this Altadena Works Bag and it’s got skills to pay the bills. Made with cordura (a high grade of nylon) canvas duck and horween leather for the base, it’s just a handsome bag. And the ‘made in the USA’ crowd will be glad to know that this is, erm, made in the USA. (Albam)

curated mag - First Look | Timberland Abington Collection Fall/Winter 2010

Live from (capsule) New York, we get a first look at the fall/winter 2010 Abington Collection from Timberland. The collection continues to draw from New England’s rich tradition of field and factory footwear, and adds new influence via the service industries. Dock workers, police men, and posties bring a new look and feel to Abington (particularly in the 5″ Boot, Oxford, and Boat Wedge models). Another new twist is the use of gore-tex liner in the hiker. Leathers are sourced from Horween and suede from Stead.

GQ | Tommy Ton shoots Milan street style

selectism - gq-jak-and-jill-01

Whilst we’ve been checking up on US GQ less since the death of Men.Style, we couldn’t help but notice they’ve roped in Tommy Ton, of Jak and Jill fame to shoot street style. As he’s mostly known for his love of womenswear (and shoes in particular), we were intrigued to see what he chose. Among what you’d expect from Jak Jill (that Raf Simons coat, a coat with fur lapels) is a mixture of restrained classic clothing such as simple double breasted blazers, grey flannel suits and shearling lined denim jackets. (GQ)

Take a leap to see our favourites from his choices.

If You Could Collaborate Exhibition

selectism - if-you-could-collaborate-exhibition-01

You’re not going crazy if you think the name sounds familiar. We featured the magazine a few weeks back and we thought it wise to take a look at the exhibition itself. As you’d expect from the teasers in the mag, it’s a visually arresting affair. We’re pretty used to art guff by now, soit’s refreshing when curator Alex Bec said that the point of the show was “to let people make new things”. From the looks of it, it’s been a simple and effective formula. (Creative Review)

Take a leap to see pictures from the exhibition after the leap.

Italian outerwear giants, C.P. Company walked their Autumn 2010 collection on the runways of Milan. GQ thinks C.P. For the man who wants to look like he’d like to go for a hike, but you know, doesn’t actually want to go on one.”

Selectism - Musgrave Pencil Co. for Billykirk Pencils

Selectism Columnists’ Billykirk give us a tour of the Musgrave Pencil Co. where they produced some proper pencils to be supplied with their forthcoming No. 231 Hand-Stitched Journal moleskin. “Years ago scores of US pencil manufacturers were competing for your business. The big four manufacturers were: Dixon Crucible Co., Eagle Pencil Co., Eberhard Faber and the American Lead Pencil Co. Beneath these Goliath’s of the pencil industry were a lot of smaller firms trying to get some of the market share. One of those smaller outfits was Musgrave Pencil Co. who’s operation was nestled amongst the red cedars of Shelbyville, TN.”
