Revisiting “The Trench Book”

Selectism - Revisiting "The Trench Book"

We first covered The Trench Book Revisiting The Trench Book publish by Assouline back in 2008. While time has passed, the iconic trench coat remains a prominent fashion staple for many men, including everyone on our staff. I guess not much has changed.

Though it began as a military uniform, the trench coat has become a cornerstone of the twenty-first century wardrobe, a kind of chic yet classic envelope that perfectly balances form and function. From linen to leather, The Trench Book Revisiting The Trench Book explores the stylish evolution of this outerwear icon in design and fashion: the mystique of a private investigator s coat, the sinister allure of the leather trench, the ultra-sexy sheath with nothing underneath. Produced with the help of the traditional trench brand, Aquascutum, this book is richly illustrated and seriously documented with interesting facts, visiting the heyday of this classic through film, fashion, history, and many contemporary heroes. All in all, The Trench Book is the authoritative volume on a timeless coat.

Available now through Amazon Revisiting The Trench Book.

Selectism - Costume National Autumn 2010 Runway

More from Milan. Costume National presents their Autumn 2010 collection. GQ Eye tells us, “An army of dark suits for the man who doesn’t wear suits, complete with drawstring trousers, zippered pant pockets, chewed-up edges, and fuzzy sleeves. All paired with high-reaching turtlenecks and I-don’t-have-a-day-job motorcycle boots.”

Missoni Autumn 2010 Presentation

Selectism - Missoni Autumn 2010 Presentation

As Fashionisto tells us, Italy’s Missoni has  ditched the runway show for their Autumn 2010 presentation. Instead, it’s presentation time. “Missoni is becoming quite the personal brand. For their spring 2010 campaign, the Missoni family replaced the usual models and now for Milan they have staged a presentation in lieu of a runway show. Showcasing nineteen layered looks, Missoni continues their signature printed reign with the addition of vivid patching and the surprise appearance of lush fur.”

Selectism - Gentle Air & Special

01. Gentle Air & Special (above)

“Ariel made me this book for Christmas, and it was easily the best present I received this year.  Read Ariel’s introduction for an explanation, but he basically took an e-mail I wrote him about what to to in Tokyo, and turned it into a Tokyo travel guide.  Oh yeah…he also had it translated into Japanese.  Fucking amazing.  Thanks dude…” (jr)

02. San Francisco’s First Bike Box Gets Stenciled!

“San Franciscans, if you were wondering what that green painted box on Scott St. is for, wonder no more. San Francisco’s first green bike box now has a user-friendly picture of a bicycle stenciled on it. Bike boxes, or waiting areas for bikers to pull into at traffic intersections have been used in New York City and Portland, Oregon since 2008 and now have a home in SF too!” (inhabitant)

03. Vass Municipal Campground / Julien Boidot

“The campground is well situated in the heart of the Loire Valley between the river, a forest of large chestnut trees and a 15th century village. The initial program proposed the renovation of the existing facility; however, while defining the objectives of the project with the elected officials in the commune the need for a new building became evident.” (archdaily)

04. Basic Table

“The Basic table transforms from an attractive coffee table into a functional dining table in seconds. Available in Square & Rectangular versions.” (likecool)

University students looking to tote books and laundry alike may enjoy this authentic Boston Public Library Delivery Bag, which are still in use today. “More than 100 years ago, the workers of the Boston Public Library figured out that the best way to ferry books between the branches was in this deep, heavy-duty bag, one in each hand to balance the load. Each is capable of holding 27 pounds.” And it’s only 38$ bucks at that. Buy five.

Selectism - The Anatomy of a Red Wing Work Boot

Papermania in Hartford was not just a haven for old antique papers from America’s past. We also discovered what we assume is “class project” made by the son or daughter or a Red Wing worker or sales rep. It simply outlines every component of leather and textile used in the making of a Red Wing Boot. From the toe cap to the leather upper, to the tongue lining, it is all here. If you have more info on this piece, fill us in.

Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations of a (Crazy) World

15 January 2010, 22.36 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - maira kalman

Last year, I had the great pleasure of working on a project with Maira Kalman. She is an artist of truly unique vision, as talented an illustrator as she is a story teller. Kalman’s career is impressive both for output and the number of people she has touched.

Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations of a (Crazy) World is her first museum survey. Along with illustrations, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia’s exhibition will include an installation of ladders, chairs, and “many tables of many things” – an introduction, if you will, to Kalman’s world. A fully illustrated catalog complements the exhibition.

The exhibition opens today and runs through June 6, 2010. The ICA is located at 118 S. 36th Street in Philadelphia, PA.

Further examples of Kalman’s illustration after the jump.

Selectism - Band of Outsider's "This is Not a Polo Shirt" Collection

Valet interviews Scott Steinberg on his “This is Not a Polo Shirt” collection of… polo shirt. “That’s just the tongue-in-cheek name for Band of Outsiders’ new polo label. But don’t go calling it a diffusion line, just because the Crayloa-colored shirts will cost you less than Band’s main line. ‘Polos are this huge iconic, err, thing in the tiny little world of guys’ clothes,” says designer Scott Sternberg. “So, I thought they warranted their own platform.’
