For the moto enthusiasts out there, TOD’s offer their head protection options – wrapped in leather. “TOD’s have launched a helmet as part of their latest expansion which has included ready to wear collections for both men and women, a larger selection of accessories and more recently sunglasses. All of their new lines stay true to their original and main craft which is shoe making. Selectism - Tina Berning for (capsule) NYC

Berning produced two complementary pieces, one inspired by our men’s show and the other by the debut of our women’s. Her signature, figurative illustration style, often on found paper, manages to speak volumes with a whisper. ” (capsule) hits NYC on Jan 18-19.

Top 5 Albums of 2009 | Daniel Jenkins

15 January 2010, 18.30 | Posted in Music | No comments »

selectism - daniel-jenkins

In the last of our series, we asked Daniel Jenkins to compile his top 5. Recently featured in UK Esquire’s top 5 indie stores, When he’s not sitting in front of fireplaces like a bawse, he’s listening to music. Which explains why he took the longest to get back to us (in case you’re wondering, Scott Sternberg was the quickest). Daniel’s selection was as considered as you’d expect with everybody from Fuck Buttons to Omar S getting a look in. Take a leap and have a listen.

Shigeru Ban: Paper in Architecture

15 January 2010, 17.32 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

curated mag - Shigeru Ban: Paper in Architecture

Typically, paper does not rank high among people’s conception of architectural materials.

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, however, has made paper his primary material, simultaneously celebrating its strength and durability and its delicacy. Ban came to fame after the 1995 Kobe earthquake, his paper based solutions functioning as much needed temporary housing with great cost efficiency.

Ban studied in the United States and returned to Japan in 1985 to establish his practice. He currently maintains offices in Tokyo, Paris, and New York, and teaches at Kelo University. Ban is recipient of two World Architecture Awards (2001 and 2002) and the Architecture for Humanity Award (1999).

Shigeru Ban: Paper in Architecture Shigeru Ban: Paper in Architecture is the first monograph to chronicle Ban’s innovative work. Forty of his permanent and temporary structures are featured though brilliant photography and concise text. An essay by Riichi Miyake neatly contextualizes Ban’s progression as an architect and his passion for innovation. The book serves as brilliant introduction to both the mind of Ban and the potential for paper in architecture.

Uniqlo +J Design Trousers

selectism - uniqlo-+j-cargo-pants

Jill Sander’s second collection of pieces for Uniqlo hasn’t received the praise that the first did, with most unable to get their heads around a couple of pieces. If you were to compare it with a musician’s album, it’d be the overlooked follow up to a stand out debut. Despite all that, there are some great pieces to be had and these design trousers are just one of them. Cargo pants are on the brink of a comeback, so why not get them at a snip (£40) and see how they’ll work into your wardrobe. Unlike most Uniqlo trousers, these come with a slight taper – perfect for folks used to the APC straight leg as opposed to the Dickies one. (Uniqlo)

First Look | Martyn Bal Spring/Summer 2010

15 January 2010, 14.30 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - martyn-bal-spring-2010-01

Like most men, Martyn Bal is a prefers the winter months over a sweaty summer. This is why he’s made his new SS10 collection short and sweet – a capsule collection as opposed to a mammoth range. The collection focuses on lightweight fabrics and draping, featuring leather jackets, shirts with unique detailing and high waisted trousers (think classic movies, not Simon Cowell).

Shot by Richard Stow at Knebworth house, Musician Erik Hassle takes over the modelling reins this season. We’ve not heard of the fellow, but Bal has and said that “He has the steely, tattooed veneer of an east London boy, but underneath, as you’ll hear on record, is an emotional soul.” Which is exactly what we thought when we saw the pictures.

Take a look at the collection after the leap.

B-Store Grey Suede Shoe

selectism - b-store-suede-boots-01

We did love the apprehensive coverage those sneaker/sandal hybrids got on the blogs. Don’t be scared folks, it’s just footwear. B Store do more than make hybrids, so we thought we’d show the conventional side of the boutique-ternt-designers. While we love low profile soles, chunky soles are perfect for sludgy weather (and adding some height). We’re bored of talking about our love for suede shoes but, erm, we do love a suede shoe – especially if it’s on sale. (Farfetch)

Selectism - IKEA Hack Dog Bowls

01. Amtrak to add Wi-Fi to Acela line in March

“The company had previously hinted at adding high-speed wireless connections to its trains and has now officially said that the Acela line (which runs between Boston and Washington D.C. with stops in Connecticut, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore) will be getting Wi-Fi in March – for free, initially, although the regular price hasn’t been announced yet. #abouttime (cgear)

02. 6 Pack Bottle Carrier

“The Sixpack is a bottle carrier that can hold up to 6 beer, soft drink, or water bottles. It’s perfect for those BYO dinner outings where a normal 6 pack gets destroyed after you rip out one beer.” (notcot)

03. 12 Hacked Nerf Superweapons [Nerf]

“I’m a grown man and I love Nerf guns. I’m not alone either, which is why modders look to trick them out with new looks and new capabilities. Check out Oobject’s list for 12 of the best Nerf mods.” (gizmodo)

04. An IKEA Lamp Made Out Of IKEA Dog Bowls (above)

“We know that IKEA furniture can be hacked in a bunch of different ways, but this is the first time that we’ve seen dog bowls being used in this fashion. This lamp is actually made out dog bowls!” (unplggd)
