First Look | Grenson Spring/Summer 2010 ‘Howard’ Shoe

selectism - grenson-spring-2010-howard

Long time readers know we love our Grensons, so it’s only right that we show this quick preview of their Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Traditionally a weaker collection for shoemakers, Grenson are one of the best at playing around with their summer collections. Removing the lining is standard for summer shoes, so Grenson went one step further, deconstructing the shoe and removing the toe support so the shoe doesn’t feel heavy. That, added with leather trim detailing, make this a great shoe for whenever the sun rears its head again.

Sanders ‘Holborn’ Chukka Boot

The current overarching trend for ‘classic’ shoes has left some designers in a spin. Why buy an overpriced collaboration when you can get the real thing for half the price? That’s the case with the Sanders chukka boot, which goes for the ridiculously reasonable price of £125. It’s got all things people hype about, Goodyear welted, quality suede, leather lined – and has the added bonus of not having an inflated price tag. The downside? The awful sites you have to deal with. We can’t even link directly to the shoe, you’ll have to scroll to the end of the page to get your hands on these. (Brogue Shoes)

Alexander West “Shirt of the Month Club”

selectsim - Alexander West "Shirt of the Month Club"

Who doesn’t want a perfect shirt? And, who wouldn’t want a new shirt every month?

Last summer we profiled New York-based custom shirt maker Alexander West, getting inside the company’s fitting process. To kick start the new year West is offering a limited time “Shirt of the Month Club” membership. At a little over $100 a shirt, members will receive a new custom fitted shirt every month of the year. Given the nature of the Alexander West service that means seasonally appropriate pieces or twelve identical shirts (for those super set in their ways).

For those living outside the Big Apple, West will happily replicate your favorite. Simply send in the shirt and they will produce the pattern, send you back a test shirt, and guide through any further modifications. This service makes the “Shirt of the Month Club” possible for anyone.

The program is in line with, but healthier, than bacon of the month clubs.

Opening Ceremony Quilted Jacket

Another day, another sale pick – that’s just how we roll. There’s a whole lotta’ badly made quilted jackets doing the rounds, but there’s always space for a well made one in our wardrobe. This Opening Ceremony jacket is lightweight, which immediately rules it out as a winter coat panic buy, but don’t let that put you off. It’d work great as a layering alternative to the scarf-jumper-coat combo everyone wears and would look great with some tan cords. Just don’t wear it with black jeans, the jewel thief look isn’t a good one. (End)

Song remains the same, take a leap to see detailed images.

Draft Magazine

E-readers are great and we’re sure they’ll have an audience, but let’s not start overlooking what you can achieve with good ol’ paper. Take Draft magazine for instance. The cover image is a watercolour artwork, which is printed on watercolour paper and glued to the cover.

Now in it’s sixth issue (although issue five was released over two years ago), Draft focuses on new art commissions, showcasing artworks picked by photographers, artists and designers. The sixth issue curates artworks from the Archive of Modern Conflict and, if we say so ourselves, looks pretty damn good. (Magculture)

Selectism - The Knife To Release Darwin Opera Album

01. Tsutomu Yamaguchi, Survivor of 2 Atomic Blasts, Dies at 93

“Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only official survivor of both atomic blasts to hit Japan in World War II, died Monday in Nagasaki, Japan. He was 93… Mr. Yamaguchi, as a 29-year-old engineer for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was in Hiroshima on a business trip when the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the morning of Aug. 6, 1945. He was getting off a streetcar when the so-called Little Boy device detonated above the city.” (nyt)

02. Las Vegas

“Las Vegas is a problem that won’t go away. Though the city has lately suffered the highest foreclosure rate in the United States, and its largest development, the $8.5 billion CityCenter is struggling to make its loan payments (even with the help of the troubled financial behemoth Dubai World), Las Vegas is now so deeply embedded in the collective American imagination that you might say it’s too important to fail.” (designobserver)

03. Girls Gone Grabblin’ DVD

“We now bring you the first and only Girls Gone Grabblin’ DVD ever produced. Be one of the first to watch & be amazed as 35 Southern Women bring you the thrill of catching catfish weighing up to 44lbs. with their hands and wrestling them to the bank. This video of catfish grabblin’ has more than 30 exciting scenes to keep you, your family & friends amused and entertained for years to come.” (coudal)

Selectism - Alpha Industries MA-A Flight Jacket

Old school military style. This flight jacket from the recently re-emerged Alpha Industries looks great in green. Not much has been done to update the design so expect an “authentic” fit from this one. “Often copied but never duplicated, the classic flight jacket made by Alpha for the military for over 40 years. For use in cold weather climates (20 degrees F).” And if you get into a sticky situation and need some help, flip the jacket and let the safety orange shine. Need Supply has them.
