Selectism - Eastman Leather for Heritage Research Aviator Pack

Steve Canyon would proud of this pack. Heritage Research worked with Eastman Leather Clothing on this WWII inspired “aviator pack” which consists of A-2 flying jacket, an Aviators Kit Bag and USAAF aircrew gloves; all of which are made in England. “The Aviators Kit Bag is made from 100% cotton OD canvas, this is an exact copy of the original WWII USAAF aviators kit bag, It is fastened by way of two sprung chevron Crown zippers, that meet at the top, with a further closure flap with press-studs. The A-10 glove was issued to all USAAF aircrew and is made from a supple Goatskin leather and lined with a fine wool knit.” And finally, the  A-2 jacket is an exact of the original made from beautiful vegetable tanned American Steerhide.”

Workwear “inspired” fashions continue to run through 2010. The Wrangler “Blue Bell” collection pushes forward this Spring with more grit ready looks. “Premium denim brand Blue Bell strikes back with a second season inspired by vintage denim, by the contrast of harsh washes against clean preppy styling, and by the 1950s. Blue Bell mixes the best of denim heritage with modern styling. For Spring/Summer 2010, the collection takes a bolder approach to design.”

Southern Foodways Books from UNC Press

Selectism - Southern Foodways Books from UNC Press

A quick nod to two solid foodways publications from University of North Carolina Press.

Matzoh Ball Gumbo Southern Foodways Books from UNC Press was first published in 2005 (and is set for a paper back release this summer). The book presents the unique problems facing southern Jews as they adopt and avoid traditional local delicacies. Needing to crop out pork and shellfish, the Jewish community found inventive solutions and formed their own redefined food traditions.

For the home cook, Sweet Carolina: Favorite Desserts and Candies from the Old North State (published in October 2009) collects a range of confections. Foy Allen Edelman produced the book the old fashioned way, traveling throughout her home state and building a catalog of recipes over a 60 year period. As result, she manages to preserve some of the grad traditions of Piedmont sweets.

Both books make superb editions to any chef or foodie library.

Both foodways publications are available now from Amazon Southern Foodways Books from UNC Press .

(capsule) Paris | Arne & Carlos Autumn/Winter 2010 Preview

28 January 2010, 18.30 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

selectism - arne-carlos-autumn-2010-preview

Didn’t we say that Capsule Paris was stuffed with good brands? No? Well, errr, it was. Take Arne & Carlos for instance. Everyone knows they’ve got the patterned knitwear game (if there is such a thing) locked down, so their AW10 collection was no surprise – in a good way. These knits won’t be for folks who like things plain but you know the old saying; patterned knitwear is the spice of wardroes.

Pendleton for Opening Ceremony Patchwork Shirt

selectism - pendleton-opening-ceremony-patchwork-shirt-01

Patchwork shirts are still a no-no for some people – but we’re not one of those people. It does have to be the right design to catch our eye – there’s enough bad shirts out there to last anyone a few lifetimes – and guess what? we think this shirt has the right design. This was still worth a purchase when it was full price, so the price has been sliced with a Hattori Hanzo, you’d be silly not to pick one up. (Opening Ceremony)

Take a leap to see detailed shots.
