Thomas Kemper Soda

selectism - Thomas Kemper Soda

For the past 20 years, the brewers at Portland, Oregon’s Thomas Kemper Soda Company has made Root Beer the old fashioned.

In 2008, Kemper Soda Company changed recipes to include cane sugar. This move eliminated high fructose corn syrup, making things more natural and more delicious. Like many other craft soda companies, the line began with Root Beer (and the company has a history in traditional brewing as well), and has since expanded to include a range of other old fashioned tastes. The addition of Black Cherry, which joined in 1998, is the real kicker.

Thomas Kemper is widely distributed in the West and made its debut in New York City last summer. Seek it out, “because nothing’s sweeter than authenticity.”

Fire & Knives Magazine

selectism - fire-knives-magazine-01.jpg

Magculture have given food magazine Fire & knives, which we first heard about through the Sunday Best, the once over. The recently launched magazine focuses on the writing as opposed to endless glitzy shots of pretty food – which doesn’t mean it’s not a beautifully designed magazine (it is) – the focus just isn’t on food porn.

According to Magculture: “The magazine was set up by editor Tim  Hayward as an alternative to the mainstream food publishing magazines, and in his editor’s letter he explains that he briefed the writers – mainly professional food critics – to ‘write as an amateur about something you love’. And that’s exactly what we get, a series of random but fascinating pieces that each take a unique aspect of food culture.”

And, to top it all off, a years subscription to this quarterly mag is only £20 – a bargain if we ever saw one. (Fire & Knives)

Selectism - Dries Van Noten Autumn 2010 Runway

Fashionisto gives his take on the Dries Van Noten show in Paris this week. “Dries Van Noten sent a graphic parade down the runway earlier today with detailed piping and larger than life prints making quite the statement. Riding an influx of color and excitement, Dries Van Noten interjected men’s suiting with great personality. From dressed down sweats-styled trousers and bold electric blue separates to contrasting inserts, Van Noten’s man proved to be the life of the party. Bridging the gap between modest and playful, the collection executed a well-balanced turn at a personable collection for the man of all occasions.”

Selectism - SO-IL Wins P.S.1 Competition

01. ACE HOTEL Blog

“We just made our new blog. We are including things about Ace that you may want to know. Like the artists who worked on the hotels, cultural events, videos, room deals, and whatever else we feel like posting.”

02. World’s Most Beautiful Cities

“Tight streets, a famous university and glimpses of parks, commons and courtyards dominate Cambridge, England. North of London, the city is accentuated by the River Cam and buildings both new and old, such as historic King’s College Chapel and Cambridge University’s modern Centre for Mathematical Sciences.” (forbes)

03. SO-IL Wins P.S.1 Competition (above)

“Since 2000, the MoMA and the P.S.1 have been running a competition under their Young Architects Program, inviting each year a group of emerging architects to experiment with new shapes and materials, resulting in a summer installation at the P.S.1.” (archdaily)

04. Erwin Olaf’s New HOTEL

“Dutch artist Erwin Olaf’s new HOTEL series was inspired by Olaf’s travels with the accompanying feelings of transience and anomie. Check out his new show “Hotel & Dawn/Dusk” (notcot)

Selectism - Blaak Homme Autumn 2010

Fashionisto rounds up the Blaak Homme Autumn 2010 runway presentation in Paris. “Standing out in stark black and white, the latest collection from Blaak Homme designers Sachiko Okada and Aaron Sharif turns to the church for inspiration. While the oversize rosary and crown of thorns make for controversial pieces of discussion, robe-inspired proportions take minimal design in a striking direction. Avoiding any great use of volume, a certain lightness is achieved where Okada and Sharif fashion a dynamic wardrobe that can be dressed up or down and applied to the year’s seasons at large.”

Selectism - Henrik Vibskov Interview on Autumn/Winter 2010

Our friends at Dazed Digital come through with a Vibskov interview around his Autumn/Winter 2010 runway show last night in Paris. “When you go to a Henrik Vibskov show you never really know what to expect, except, of course, for the unexpected! I’m not even sure Vibskov himself knows. By creating his own mini universe – this time called XX – Vibskov lets the audience into a world where fashion meets art and music, two of the Danish designer’s other main interests. Indeed, the wooden artwork that crowns the catwalk is his own work.” Read the full interview at Dazed Digital.
