Jacob Holdt Photographers Gallery Exhibition

selectism - jacob-holdt-american-pictures-01

Photographer Jacob Holdt is renowned for his honest and raw capturing of every side of American society. Capturing a side of America that wasn’t being captured at the time, he sought to show every side of America – from KKK meetings to high society functions. Now a selection of his prints are available for sale from the photographer’s gallery . At £500 a pop, anyone with a few spaire coins should be itching to get their hands on these. Just look at the (we presume) family in the picture – they’ve got more collective style than a million men’s style bloggers (Ourselves included – save the salty comments for another day). [Photographers Gallery]

Take a leap to read a bio and see more pictures from the exhibition.

Selectism - Project LV | J.W. Hulme

Our only  true “American heritage” hit from Project Las Vegas, St. Paul, Minnesota’s own  J.W. Hulme.

What really grabbed us? A striking lambswool wine case. The bags and other leather accessories (including a massive leather Valet and some gorgeous notebooks), continue to carry high premium on time-honored techniques. The results are always handsome, whether it be to carry your worldly goods or the worlds best bottle of bubbly.

More looks at J.W. Hulme from Project Las Vegas after the jump.

Selectism - Project LV | Nau Autumn/Winter 2010

For Autumn/Winter 2010, Nau introduces a new model in their Shroud of Purrin series. Complementing the jacket and hoody, their Shroud of Purrin Blazer buttons up and includes a flip collar for added protection from the elements. The piece will be available in both Caviar (black) and Tobac (brown).

Other items that caught our eye at Project Las Vegas were the Rheostat Jacket and Blazing Jacket. Both are made with the same 2 layer breathable laminate. The Rheostat Jacket is filled with 850 Power Goose Down, making it (perhaps) the warmest item in the Nau collection.

Check out details of all the new Nau jackets from Project Las Vegas after the jump.

Selectism - Project LV | Will Leather Goods Autumn/Winter 2010

Will Leather Goods, an Adler Family company, produces artisan leather goods in Eugene, Oregon. The offers run the leather gamut of bags, belts, card cases, cuffs, and wallets. The wallets, for example, are made from double washed lambskin giving them an extremely soft hand and finish that ages gracefully over time.

At Project Las Vegas, Will Leather Goods displayed a new series of belts. These display a variety of hand-tooling detail and occasional forays into metal embellishment. The bags stick to more traditional aesthetic mixing leather with washed cotton canvas.

Selectism - Project LV | Nobis Cork Hats for Autumn/Winter 2010

A cork hat? Yes, indeed.

One of the more intriguing items from Project Las Vegas comes from Toronto-based Nobis. Coming in two styles, these lightweight caps carry amazing texture and individual coloring. The use of cork is in keeping with the brands interest in exploring a wide variety of materials. Previously (and continually) they work in angora and llama wool, hemp, and with several other recycled sources.

In addition, Nobis will continue to offer a range of knit caps.

Further details of Nobis’ autumn/winter collection after the leap.

Selectism - Vegas | Mark McNairy US Navy Digital Camo Pants

Captured in Vegas, this smart pair of  U.S. Navy digital camouflage 8-pocket cargo pants from famed designer, Mr. Mark McNairy. Another great complement to a growing collection of rather unique American prep. This notion follows suit in a set of superb nylon taffeta coaches jackets (a form which is, quite possibly, America’s greatest coat). McNairy’s sweatpants and v-neck sweatshirt are also absolutely superb.

Selectism Q&A | Aylin Beyce, designer of Levi’s Cords by Opening Ceremony

selectism - Selectism Q&A | Aylin Beyce, designer of Levi's Cords by Opening Ceremony

On Saturday, the Levi’s Cords by Opening Ceremony tour (if you will) roll’s into San Francisco. The founders of Opening Ceremony, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, are both graduates of UC Berkley. Given their Bay Area roots, it seemed appropriate for Levi’s to create “a home away from home” for the Levi’s Cords by Opening Ceremony Collection. To that end, Jay Carroll of One Trip Pass helped to create a “store within a store” at the Levi’s Flagship Store in San Francisco’s Union Square. This pop up space within the Levi’s shop will offer the collection as well as some other collaborative items.

Given the publicity of both collection and the “store within a store,” we decided to take some time and dig (a little) into the background of the Levi’s Cords by Opening Ceremony collection. We chatted with Aylin Beyce, designer of the collection, wishing to learn more about the collaborative process and Levi’s background in cordaroy.

Hit the jump to read her responses. (please note the above photograph is by Phillip King, and captures one of the launch campaign sites in San Francisco).

Project LV | Spring Court for Jean Shop Sneakers

Selectism - Spring Court for Jean Shop Sneakers

Without giving away too much, here are some macro views of one of our favorite sneaker co-brands for the coming year. Working with New York’s Jean Shop, the classic shoe brand builds with indigo and natural selvedge denim. It’s sort of like teaming the already classic combination of canvas plimsoll and jean together. Well, it is exactly like that and the result is clean and simple. We’re told they’ll drop early in Japan and then land in the USA soon thereafter. Shown at Project LV.

Attachment Leather Jacket

selectism - attachment-leather-jacket-01

We’ve been neglecting the leather jacket. It’s not because we don’t love them, it’s just easy to forget about certain pieces in the current menswear climate. This Attachment number is right up our alley right now – it’s hooded, it’s calf leather (buttery soft) and it avoids any overworking. And, as you all know, it’s from Japan and therefore we love it. And that’s all there is to it. (Mindtrive)

Take that leap to see detailed images.
