Ally Capellino ‘Alphonse’ Rucksack

selectism - ally-capellino-alphonse-02

Ally Capellino’s SS10 collection saw a new addition to the family in the form of the ‘Alphonse’ rucksack. It’s got all the typical components of an Ally Capellino bag – well made, quintessentially British, canvas and all that good stuff – and has the added bonus of having a vintage rucksack shape. Size-wise you can’t carry the world on your shoulders, but there’s enough room for the essentials. (Ally Capellino)

Albam Burgundy Overshirt

selectism - albam-burgundy-overshirt-01

We’ve recently fallen in love with overshirts. It’s not that we didn’t like them before, it was just hard getting the right usage out of them. They’re a great way to layer up and play about with patterns. This Albam wool overshirt is rough and tough with an afropuff, easily subsituting as a lightweight jacket when spring comes. We gave it a feel up when we dropped by the store and can vouch for the quality of the piece. Going well with either denim or chinos this, like 90% of all Albam goods, will be a favourite for years to come. (Albam)

selectism - TAG Heuer | Time Brand Story and Photo Book

Assouline does good trade in brand books. Over the last few months we’ve seen releases (current and forthcoming) detailing the history of Pierre Cardin and Lacoste. For watch lovers, their Tag Heuer TAG Heuer | Time Brand Story and Photo Book book details the nuts and bolts of Edouard Heuer’s vision. A strong selection of photographs from the speedway complements detailed images of watches past and present.

The book is authored by Nick Foulkes who has produced volumes on cigars, James Bond, and trench coats.

Available for pre-order from Amazon TAG Heuer | Time Brand Story and Photo Book.

Oliver Spencer Fisher Jacket

selectism - oliver-spencer-fisher-jacket-01

This is going to sound odd, but why don’t more jackets have pockets that open at the side? I mean, we love our old school duffle’s but anyone doing an update should at least improve the positioning of the pockets – no point doing a classic (especially one that’s still being made and sold) if you’re not going to improve on its flaws. Mini-rant aside, this Oliver Spencer jacket is just right for us; it’s light enough to wear in warmer weather, short enough to look casual and tough enough to deal with an impromptu downpour. And it has side pockets. To get all cheesy and start using sporting phrases, game, set and match. (Oi Polloi)

selectism - A Weekend at Home | Nashville

It’s currently Antiques Week in Nashville, Tennessee.

While we know that won’t drive many readers to Music City, it was enough for us to make the home of the Titans subject of our “A Weekend at Home” series. In this, the second, installment, Brandon Capps shares his favorite dinning, drinking, and shopping haunts. Included is the Country Music Hall of Fame (above) and some far less touristy spots.

Check out Capps’ full selections here.

Interview with Jeremy Leslie of Magculture

12 February 2010, 11.30 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

selectism - magculture-interview

Jeremy Leslie, founder of SL favourite Magculture, has a great interview up with the folks at Grafik. As you’d expect, the focus is on the blog and magazines as whole. For those that aren’t aware of Leslie, he’s a magazine designer who up until fairly recently was executive creative director at communications agency John Brown. He also wrote a book about magazine, which was also called Magculture (the blog was originally a place to add short updates to the book edition). While the whole interview is an interesting read, we were nodding like the Churchill dog at his answer about bringing back magazines.

Are there any that you’d like to resurrect from the magazine graveyard?
None. Magazines cease publication because their time has passed. Bringing them back is a fools game. What did the rebirth of Nova do for anyone?

01. Alexander McQueen, Designer, Is Dead at 40 [NYT Obituary]

“Though he apprenticed on Savile Row, Mr. McQueen, thumbed his nose at the conventions of English style by staging lavish runway productions that included clothes made with animal bones and models made to look as if they were patients in a mental ward or participants in a life-sized chess match. Yet he was a tailor of the highest order, making impeccably shaped suits that were also surprisingly commercial.” (nyt)
