01. Sachin Tendulkar fires record 200 against South Africa

“Sachin Tendulkar created history with the first double century in one-day internationals as India thrashed South Africa by 153 runs in Gwalior.” (BBC)

02. Catching the Wave (above)

“In the 1940s, the investor, diplomat and art collector William A.M. Burden and his wife, Margaret Livingston Partridge Burden, commissioned Wallace K. Harrison – the architect who was involved in the design of iconic works like Rockefeller Center, the Museum of Modern Art (of which Mr. Burden was president in the 1950s and ’60s) and the United Nations headquarters – and the artist Isamu Noguchi to design a summer house off the Maine coast. The house, which was completed in 1947, became a 20th-century landmark, literally as well as figuratively – it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places – as well as a remarkable example, after a devastating fire, of how to restore a Modernist dwelling.” (NYT)

03. Large Saucepans

“In the home kitchen equipment line of succession, the large saucepan occupies a secure place near the top, somewhere just below a sharp chef’s knife and a 12-inch skillet. We can’t picture doing without one—its hefty frame, deep bowl, long arm, and tight-fitting lid make it the go-to vessel for steamed rice, soups, sauces, and even pastry cream—and we’ve gladly paid dearly for a model that can take a daily dose of shuffling around the stovetop.” (Cook’s Illustrated)

04. ‘The Masterworks Of Charles M. Russell’

“The only major artist of the American West who actually worked on the open range, Charles Marion Russell (1864–1926) became a self-taught chronicler of the Old West as it faded into history. Along with Frederic Remington (1861–1909), Russell depicted cowboys, soldiers, Native Americans, historical figures, animals and landscapes in images that have become cultural icons of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century Western experience.” (The Bee)

Selectism - BBlessing Autumn/Winter 2010 Looks

BBlessing sends over some on the street looks from their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. Though shot in the rough, the photos lay our a clear look at what you’ll be seeing in stores towards the latter end of the Summer. Their “Plaid Standard” as well as black and red madras get worked over on trousers, shirts, and norfolk jackets. The red and plaids stand out well in the collection – both of which may give the hesitant male a chance to dip his toes in the non-solid world. While we’re on them, we’re told that there are some subtle hints of “occult influence” in the collection though we’ll need to wait for individual style looks to examine that aspect.

Decodence at South Street Seaport Museum

On the high seas, no ship captured the full Art Deco style as fully as the SS Normandie. A passenger liner, the Normandie was the most glamorous of the early 20th-century “floating palaces.” In Decodecne: Legendary Interiors and Illustrious Travelers Aboard the SS Normandie, South Street Seaport Museum celebrates the boat in full glory. The exhibition includes interiors, photographs, video and more, all with the intent of expressing why the Normandie captured the imagination of people the world over.

The museum has a dedicated site offering a preview of the exhibition. The Telegraph has also published a comprehensive review. Both options have glorious photographs from the show. (via Curated).

Deocdence runs through January, 2011.

Selectism - 100 Days for February 2010 by ELC

Another brand takes a shot at outputting looks on a non-seasonal schedule. The 100 Days project from ELC Clothing looks to drop small capsule collections every “100 days.” What is not clear is how they’ll be selling these looks. Will it remain online only or will retailers be able to buy in advance. The difficulty we see is in keeping the momentum running at this heavy pace. For now we offer you a few looks from the first series for February 2010.

Rachel Comey Rigby Nomad Hiker

selectism - Rachel Comey Rigby Nomad Hiker

Rachel Comey’s footwear offerings are something of a fan favorite here at Selectism. Not too formal, not too casual, and with just enough color to strike out from the norm. Color might be absent from the Rigby Nomad Hiker, but the shoe maintains our favorite bits from true mountain shoes (d-rings) while pairing down the aesthetic and lightening the silhouette.

In truth, these also remind of a favored pair of Ellesse trainers from my youth. And, given that finding a pair of those is near impossible, Ms. Comey’s hiker twist keeps hope alive. (via Acquire).

J.W. Anderson Autumn/Winter 2010 Runway Preview

Selectism - J.W. Anderson Autumn/Winter 2010 Runway Preview

Our friends at Oki-ni tested an interesting concept on zero day sale. In conjunction with J.W. Anderson’s Autumn/Winter 2010 runway show this morning in London, the shop secured a limited selection of seven pieces from the collection to be put on sale just as the runway show itself began. The boots, as worn by the models this morning, were a quick sellout, but other selections remain. This test from J.W. Anderson and Oki-ni seemingly reduces the time  between previews and sales. We’re interested to see where this concept goes in the future, especially with the emergence of live streaming from shows.
