Theatre De La Mode Belted Coat

23 February 2010, 18.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Selectism - theatre-de-la-mode-belted-coat-01If those Oliver Spencer jeans were a jumpshot, this coat is an (early career) A.I crossover. While most attempts to do up a parka fall flat, This Theatre De La Mode coat hits the mark. It’s hard to pick out exactly what got us – it could be anything from the cuff detailing to the belt. We’re sure critics will say it’s not masculine enough, but masculinity is something you should bring to your clothes – not the other way round. (Farfetch)

Song remains the same – take a leap to see detailed shots.

Oliver Spencer Oli’s Linen Denim Jeans

23 February 2010, 16.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - oliver-spencer-oli-jeansThis post is gonna be boring for a few people. Don’t switch over just yet though. For us, pieces like this remind us of our younger days playing basketball (don’t worry, this is going somewhere). We were always told to learn the fundamentals before the flashy stuff and we think clothing’s the same. This piece here? It’s a fundamental. Mix it up with a flashier piece and you’ll be able to straddle along the right side of fashionable. (Oliver Spencer)

Selectism Q&A | Manufacturing in New York

selectism - Selectism Q&A | Manufacturing in New York

Undoubtedly, the recent and regularly publicized trend for Americana has created new reverence for locally made and manufactured garments. A number of brands following that notion regularly escape our full attention. To that end, Cary Randolph Fuller spent a bit of time chatting with a few of the folks in New York dedicated to Big Apple production.

The purpose of the Q&A is two fold – one, to give voice to smaller brands and two, investigate the process they go through as emerging entities. A third reason behind our Q&A was to get a little feminine perspective on Selectism. We’re male heavy, and though the subject might not be directly geared to the lady, Cary’s concern and interest in menswear differs from ours.

The focus here might be New York and the City might have garment trade advantages over other locales, however there are universal lessons that may be useful/inspiring to people across the United States.

What follows is a discussion with Adele Berne and Mike Kuhle of Epaulet, Eunis Lee, Mordechai Rubinstein, and Roy Dank. Above is an example from Roy Dank’s The Wurst Editions. Pieces from the others are peppered throughout the Q&A.

CuldeSac “Welding Wood”

selectism - CuldeSac Welding Wood

Given a sincere love for turned wood, CuldeSac’s contemporary appropriation of lathe turning, joinery and steam bending techniques have immediate appeal. The Spanish design agency treats the traditional methods with great respect, managing as well to incorporate a non-traditional line to the legs. Titled “Welding Wood,” the line is limited to stools and a low table. Simple, handsome furniture. (via Contemporist).

Jas M.B. for Mihara Yasuhiro Boston Bag

selectism - mihara-yashiro-jas-mb-boston-bag-01

Thank gawd for the internet eh? Without it we wouldn’t have known about this handsome collaboration (we also wouldn’t have existed in the first place, but let’s not get all existential). London bag maker Jas M.B. teamed with Japanese designer Mihara Yasuhiro to make a capsule collection of two bags. This Boston bag is our pick of the two, made to the usual high Jas M.B. standards and easing up on the detailing, it’s just what you’d expect from a collabo between the two. Now if only we could get our mitts on it without a proxy…… (Mindtrive)

Take a leap to see them detailed pics.

The Hill-Side Camouflage Tie

selectism - The-Hill-Side-Camo-Tie

Here’s an early morning confession – we don’t wear ties often (we’re currently waiting for the presses to stop after that bombshell). It’s not that we don’t like ties, we buy them on occasion and all, but there’s something just a bit too prim and proper about a tie. If we did wear ties, we’d probably start with getting our hands on this one. What makes this tie is the camo pattern, which rids it of the preppy properness (if that’s a word) that plagues most ties. It might even get us wearing ties again. (Context)

Selectism - Pentax K-7 Limited Edition Camera in Silver

01. Denny’s Invites You to Follow a Random Taiwanese Man Named Dennys on Twitter

“A Denny’s rep says the menus are a result of a misprint, and that they run two Twitter accounts: @DennysAllNightr for late night customers and @DennysGrandSlam for morning people. Both of those are featured on the respective late night and breakfast menus. The normal menus, however, still point you to Mr. Hsieh.” (gizmodo)

02. Pentax K-7 Limited Edition Camera in Silver (above)

“In response to the enthusiastic requests from many devoted PENTAX lovers, the camera body is finished in silver. It is identical with the color of the high-performance FA Limited interchangeable lens series, a family of lenses designed for the highest level of image description. Because of this, the K-7 Limited Silver is the perfect stylistic match for any FA Limited-series lens. Set in lower area of the camera body, the SR (Shake Reduction) lettering is in a special gold color that stands out proudly against the subdued black-colored, leather-like finish.” (pentax)

03. EMI Not Selling Abbey Road After All

“Last week, reports circulated that EMI was planning to sell the famous Abbey Road recording complex, where the Beatles recorded most of their material, Pink Floyd made Dark Side of the Moon, and countless other artists have worked. But after fan outcry, EMI has released a statement claiming that the studio isn’t being sold, but that the label is looking for ‘financial help to save it,’…” (pitchfork)
