Video | Roman & Williams

“ ‘It’s a shame to only have dreams at night. You should have a few opportunities during the day.’ This wistful quote from Stephen Alesch speaks volumes about the spaces he and Robin Standefer create as architects and designers. Their firm Roman & Williams, is named for their grandparents, paying homage to another era. Together, they draw on the evocative moods, textures, and meaningful objects that linger somewhere between past and present… As a team they have developed an approach to creating buildings and interiors that reveres craft and tradition, combined with a contemporary viewpoint. This unique vision has lead to a number of important public and private projects including the Ace Hotel, The Standard Hotel, and 211 Elizabeth.” (via thescout)

Ferris Bueller Ferrari Up for Auction

Selectism - Ferris Bueller Ferrari Up for Auction

Well it’s not a real Ferrari 250GT Spyder California but a replica John Hughs had made for the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off movie. More from Retrotogo: ”It’s a Ferrari 250GT Spyder California, but not a real one – only 100 of the original were made between 1958 and 1963, making it super-rare, so John Hughes and Paramount actually had a replica made for filming. Which is the one being sold off now. Just think, you too could be careering around the city in that same car – but you’ll not have to worry about the mileage or your parents.”

It is available in one checker wool colorway with a bit of a classic appeal and in a range of solid colorways with a stripe design going all over the upper. The hats are now available at Marc by Marc Jacobs stores.”

Sixpoint Craft Ales Double Sweet Action

selectism - Sixpoint Craft Ales Double Sweet Action

Chris Schonberger reports from Sixpoint’s Red Hook, Brooklyn brewery.

In terms of sheer access to great beers, New York’s craft scene is tough to beat—bodegas in the trendier parts of town stock labels like Chimay and Smuttynose, and beer bars are a fixture of the city’s drinking culture. Given all this intake from the world’s best producers, it’s ironic that NYC keeps one of its finest brewers to itself—Sixpoint Craft Ales sells almost 90% of its product within a 10 mile radius of it’s Red Hook, Brooklyn brewery (look for it in Philly, as well), and the company has no plans of bottling anytime in the near future. Instead, the fanatical brew team focuses on quality-control and innovation, keeping local taps flowing with its stellar lineup of ales and producing one-off proprietary brews for restaurants like the Breslin at the Ace Hotel (a Scotch cask ale) and the Modern (an ESB and a soon-to-be-released stein beer made by dropping molten stones into the wort). An example of Sixpoint’s creativity and expertise is the Double Sweet Action, which hit select retailers and bars in February to mark the brewery’s fifth anniversary. Taking the popular Sweet Action as its base, the Double Sweet has twice the hops, twice the malts and nearly twice the alcohol, yet somehow it holds the alcohol well and doesn’t taste like a typical American hop monster. In NYC you can get almost any beer in the world, but as long as Sixpoint’s around, it still pays to drink local.

Andreas Martin-Löf for Monocle Clamp Lamp

Selectism - Andreas Martin-Löf for Monocle Clamp Lamp

Monocle continues their collaborative work with what I consider to be their most interesting product yet. The Blackberry did nothing for me and the BEAMS watch… Well, this clamp lamp designed by Andreas Martin-Löf is clearly a move in the right direction. My only issue is the lack of a US plug though I am sure an EU adapter would solve that problem. 100 hundred units are being produced. Find it now online at Monocle.

Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing From Harper’s Magazine

selectism - Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing From Harper's Magazine

In one sweep of the Harper’s archive, Rules of the Game Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing From Harpers Magazine collects some of the most venerable voices of American writing in a single volume. Yes, they all talk sports. But, they do so in a way that touches the varied threads of American life, building larger societal issues – race, for example – as they tackle the games that amuse us all. The earliest of the essays (from 1903) finds James B. Connolly chatting about German ships.  The bookend essay (chronologically speaking), by Lewis H. Lapham from 2008, address drug use in Major League Baseball.

The joy of Rules of the Game Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing From Harpers Magazine comes in part through the pacing of the essays. They are not divided by theme, there is no strong push to plod along year by year. Instead editors Matthew Stevenson and Michael Martin allow the pieces to flow naturally, providing snapshots of American history through the lens of sports. A personal favorite comes from Pete Axthelm, whose “The City Game” brings the basketball courts of New York City alive. The racial changes to the game are tackled, working to not to seperate but to hammer down the socio-economic concerns that root basketball in the urban American landscape.

Axthelm’s essay is just one of many rich snap shots within Rules of the Game Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing From Harpers Magazine, a book which has enough depth to engage any reader regardless of sporting bend.

Out from April, 1, 2010, from Franklin Square Press. Preorder from Amazon Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing From Harpers Magazine.

Kitsune Maison 9/Kitsune Clothing Autumn/Winter 2010 Teaser

31 March 2010, 16.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Kitsune’s new video meshes the best of both their worlds, using music from the latest mixtape to soundtrack a teaser video using Kitsune’s AW10 collection. We could come up with all types of hullaballo about this, but basically it’s two very pretty people putting clothes on – what else is there to say?
