Three Floyds Dark Lord Imperial Russian Stout

selectism - Three Floyd's Dark Imperial Russian Stout

Spring is in the air, and as such rather than just switch shoes you should also think about stocking your beer cellar properly.

Three Floyds Dark Lord is pretty damn seasonal. Sold one day of the year, on the appropriately named Dark Lord Day, the brew is made from intelligentsia coffee, Mexican vanilla, and Indian sugar. Apparently this mixture helps the beer to defy description. So I’ll just mention this – Dark Lord regularly receives top ratings from the brilliant brew hounds at Beer Advocate.

This year Dark Lord Day gets going on April 24.

What all happens on Dark Lord Day?

Dark Lord Day is the only day of the year to buy Three Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial stout. DLD is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, buy Dark Lord, try Oak Aged Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout, eat BBQ, listen to live music, and generally have a great time.

Seems pretty tremendous.

  1. C:

what hasn’t been mentioned is the ticket required to purchase Dark Lord. they tend to sell out within minutes

  2. good point. cheers. that is the one downfall of an otherwise brilliant event.

The Emperor has no clothes. I’ve had this beer, and it’s way overrated. Seemed like an excuse for the brewers to cram as many tastes, flavors, and accents as possible into one beverage. It’s incredibly crowded and overcomplicated; sugary; almost cloying to drink. Alpha King is great and Gumball Head is one of my very favorite beers, but this one fails. Its pretentious once-yearly appearance is actually a blessing in disguise.

All DLD tickets sold out in 55 minutes compared to four hours last year.

The event itself is getting to a little too much. There are a lot of folks that go just to buy the beer for resale. The ticket system is very nice since you can be guaranteed getting bottles instead of having to camp out in line for 6-8 hours and end up not getting any. The beer has a very interesting taste, and definitely gets better with age. While waiting in line this year we cracked open a bottle from last year. The alcohol was not as overpowering, the beer mellowed out and there was a lot more of a chocolate taste to it.

Brian : Unfortunately, no matter how well done something is in any avenue of life, there’s always going to be someone that believes they don’t like said thing for their own various reasons. Naturally, however, your opinion doesn’t hold more weight because you stick out in the crowd. Perhaps you’re not an imperial stout fan. Perhaps you don’t even know what that means.
