Calibre Autumn 2010

Selectism - Calibre Autumn 2010

I post this because I love black cats and Fashionisto. “Having fun with their fall collection, Calibre ventures on the wild side with an anything goes attitude and a modern wardrobe fit for daywear or a night out on the town. Embracing sheen and slim fits, the Calibre man keeps a consistent silhouette for both casual shirting and suiting. Altogether, a product of today, the Calibre man lives in a bubble of his own, keeping options relatively safe.”

Chanel J12 Retrograde Mysterieuse Watches

Selectism - Chanel J12 Retrograde Mysterieuse Watches

Chanel dropped some new “anniversary” ceramic at Baselworld 2010 with the help of the team at Audemars Piguet Renaud Papi. Looking at the photos really does not do justice to what the mechanics of the watch are doing. You may need to read this twice to grasp the complication.

“The name of this watch is beginning to take on meaning: Rétrograde for the minute hand which reverses its travel for ten minutes during which, at each revolution of the dial, the hand returns to its position under the crown -i.e. between 10 and 20 past each hour, with the minute counted in figures in the magnifying aperture at the bottom of the dial -and Mystérieuse for the mysterious workings of this dual analog and digital display. It is a highly technical and very aesthetically-pleasing watch complication.” One final note on the crown: it’s verticable retractable. The photo above shows its position. (timezone)

Selectism - Suit Royal Blue Felix Jacket

Suit was launched in 2004. Their concern, like many new menswear brands, is contemporary takes on classic pieces. Their Felix Jacket is indicative of the approach. Based on a fisherman’s coat, the Felix Jacket is constructed of treated cotton and features some distinctive buttoning. The royal (or petrol) blue is an exclusive to No. 6. The jacket also comes in stone, navy, and red.

The Glory Days: New York Baseball, 1947 – 1957

selectism - The Glory Days: New York Baseball, 1947 - 1957

The year 1947 marked the end of one era and the dawn of a new one for New York City baseball fans. Babe Ruth bade an emotional farewell to fans at Yankee Stadium; in the same month, Jackie Robinson played his first major league game at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. A mere ten years later the Dodgers and Giants pulled up stakes and headed for California. In between were an extraordinary 11 seasons during which New York City ruled baseball – and vice versa.

The Glory Days originally ran on site at the Museum of the City of New York in 2007. Re-envisioned as an online exhibition, The Glory Days retains its magic and in digital form remains well paced. The presented material goes through 9 themed “Innings” and one extra period of play to cover the teams, the fans, the press, the stadiums, and quite a bit more. From pieces like the above pro model glove to press pins for the subway series, the objects do more than just root baseball in the Big Apple – there’s enough to prove the City’s importance to the sport as a whole. And, hell, it is hard to argue against the above statement alone, but add to that May’s behind the back catch and names like Mickey Mantle and the allure of New York baseball is impossible to ignore.

Check out the exhibition here. There’s honestly something for everyone.

Some of the fine bits of ephemera and photographs from the exhibition are on view after the jump.

First Look | Ally Capellino for Liberty Frank Rucksack

22 March 2010, 19.06 | Posted in Accessories | 2 comments »

selectism - ally-capellino-liberty-frank-rucksack-01

SL fave Ally Capellino is celebrating her 30th anniversary this year and to mark that event she’s taking part in a number of events and collaborations. First up on the collab side is a special edition version of the Frank rucksack, made with department store Liberty.

Made with leather instead of waxed cotton and lined with Liberty fabric, it’s a slight tweak that Capellino has become renowned for. Liberty will also house an installation for Capellino during April, so any fans would be advised to take a peek if they’re in the city. This bag will be available from Liberty from April.

Song remains the same, detailed images after the leap.

Selectism - Kawakubo Trade Museum

Give it to Dazed for getting the description right on the latest project from CdG’s Rei Kawakubo and Dover Street Market. “Only Comme des Garçons has the guts to fill a shop floor with beautiful products that no one are allowed to buy, just gaze admiringly at. But what a brilliant idea though. How often are you ashamed of just walking around a shop, knowing that a shop assistant is staring you in the neck, upset to that you are ‘just browsing’. Well, now you don’t have a choice. You’re not allowed to buy, just look.” I have heard many people mention this is how they feel when they walk into DSM, no?

Penfeld Lockwood Jacket

selectism - penfield-lockwood-jacket-01

Now that the weather’s brightening up, it’s easy to get brave and consider not wearing a jacket. Don’t do it – despite the sun, summer’s still a long way off. And, as anyone who’s been caught in rainstorm only wearing knitwear will attest, random downpours have caused the death of many a chunky cardigan. So, instead of using your cardigan as a jacket, may we suggest you go back to light layers? You know it makes sense. This Penfield jacket would do the job – there’s even a hood so you don’t have to worry about carrying an umbrella. (Norse Store)

Nom De Guerre Camo Shirt/Jacket

Selectism - nom-de-guerre-camo-shirt-jacket-01

We know camo is back with a bang and all but, with the menswear world still as focused on workwear as it is, it’s an easy pattern to get wrong. We know what you’re thinking – how can I go wrong with camouflage? For one, you could pick a pattern that’s a little too loud. And when you’ve been wearing nothing but navy and beige, it’s the clothing equivalent of going from 0-60 in one second. So, for now, we advise you keep it calm with a subdued camo pattern like this NDG number. (Tres Bien)

Take a leap to see another look at this shacket (yep, we’re calling it that)
