Sleep Box

Selectism - Sleep Box

For the traveller who needs a quick hit of shut eye, these mobile pods called “Sleep Box” may solve the issue of having to check into a hotel for a short period of time. Dubai Airport looks to be one of the first to receive their deployment of “Sleep Boxes.” Chillnite News is reporting that they’re receiving between 50 and 70 of them in the coming month. “Sleep Boxes are small cubicle spaces that are available at public places like Airports, train stations etc where people can book the ‘box’ for set time period to catch some sleep. It offers a small resting space while you wait for that connection in few hours. Ofcourse it doesnt come with attached washroom…you can use a public one for that. The concept is not new as Japan already has ‘Capsule Hotels’ that serve the same purpose. The only difference is that Sleep Boxes are bigger in size and give space to sit and sleep.”

Selectism - ds-dundee-autumn-2010-shoes-02

DS Dundee have been making strides in their clothes, making their clothes locally without the usual boasting that comes with the territory these days. For their AW10 collection they’ve started making their shoes at Cheaney’s factory (as they noted in the process series) making some fetching brogues and boots. Entitled the ‘Brander’ brogue and the ‘Bannerman’ boot respectively – you can see the latter after the jump – the company continues to make clothes for men who like well made, classic clothes at affordable prices.

Take a leap to see the boots in question.

Timberland for Saks Fifth Avenue Boat Shoe

selectism - Timberland for Saks Fifth Avenue | Boat Shoe

Spring has just started to filter into the air, and with it a change of footwear is inevitable. Our (or mostly mine) love for boat shoes doesn’t waver in winter, but it certainly blooms in full come summer.

Timberland’s association with Saks Fifth Avenue began last fall with a colorful handsewn collection. The color and the technique remain as the relationship progresses, but this time the Timberland and Saks co-branded footwear falls on a boat shoe. They will go for $120 and come in colors like green, purple, orange, and navy.

No surprise here – they are available exclusively at Saks retail locations.

The full color spectrum after the jump.

Wings + Horns Chambray Parka

Selectism - wings-horns-chambray-parka-01

Wings & Horns had a barnstormer of a autumn/winter collection – to paraphrase Mike Tyson, the blog love was impetuous, the styling impregnable and the clothes just ferocious. Their SS10 collection hasn’t had that effect on folks, but there’s still more than a few great pieces to get your hands on. Take this parka for instance, while folks are getting bored of chambray shirts – or to be more accurate, getting bored of blogs hyping chambray shirts – a chambray parka is still interesting enough to get the nod of approval. Old Rosie Scrumpy Cider

selectism - Old Rosie Scrumpy Cider

Jason wisely commented recently that while we like our beers at Selectism, we don’t mind a good cider either. A personal favorite is Old Rosie Scrumpy, produced by H. Weston & Sons. It is a mildly dry, still cider and slightly cloudy (due to being allowed to settle naturally after fermentation). A brilliant drink. At 7.3% alcohol, it will also help ease any troubles quite quickly.

The Turf Tavern in Oxford serves up Old Rosie regularly. A particularly excellent pub for its outdoor seating and somewhat off-the-beaten-path location, I’ve passed several Spring and Summer days there over the odd pint.

Old Rosie Scrumpy is also sold in the above 2o liter box (probably only in the UK), which provides enough for either one big day or three months of extended sampling.

CRYDD for Old Curiosity Shop Desert Boots

Despite the flood of pastel coloured shoes in spring, bright footwear has always been a tough sell for guys. We understand the reticence in winter – no one wants to look like they’re wearing hi-visibility footwear – but come spring, we feel it’s time to branch out a little. So why not get a pair of these? They’ve got the rubber sole people are still loving and they’re just summery enough for our tastes. And if you don’t know what to wear them with, just pair them with your regular indigo denim. Detailed views are right where you thought they were, after the leap.

Soulland ‘Nyholm’ Duffel Jacket

Selectism - soulland-nyholm-duffel-coat-01

The spring duffle is a piece that’s been getting a revamp the past few spring/summer seasons; now Soulland throw their coat into the ring with this effort. The main improvement this version’s made over the usual duffle is the oft-overlooked slanted pockets – something most designers tend to overlook when redoing the duffle. And, although it’s wool, it’s much lighter than the usual wool you’re used to – so you don’t have to worry about overheating when the temperature rises. (ASOS)

Selectism - On the Spot with Kim Jong-il

01. Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller Exhibit, February 6-April 25, 2010

“Work by Herman Miller designers such as Gilbert Rohde, George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames have long been integrated into our furniture exhibit. This exhibition focuses on a number of perspectives on the Herman Miller achievement — an achievement rooted in a combination of extraordinary vision and practical realization. The company’s commitment to addressing real design problems — always with an insistence on achievable, affordable and durable solutions — continues to this day.” (thehenryfordorg)

02. Bureaucrats and their Offices

“From Jan Banning’s series entitled Bureaucratics.” (kottke)

03. Create a Lamp Out of a Detergent Bottle

“Coming from the same great source as the neat Coffee Can Lamp, ReadyMade, this project uses a detergent bottle to create a lamp. Since it is the month where we are focusing on all things home appliance we thought that this was the perfect time to share this project made from the upcycling of a common object found in laundry rooms everywhere.” (unpluggd)

04. On the Spot with Kim Jong-il (above)

“The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea’s state-run (and only) news agency, sporadically releases photos of reclusive 69-year-old leader Kim Jong-il as he makes “on-the-spot” guidance visits. Kim Jong-il, continuing a practice begun by his father, Kim Il-sung, makes these visits to factories and facilities throughout the country, purportedly to offer his personal guidance. Followed by army officers, security personnel and plant managers – most carrying pencils and notepads to record the guidance of ;Dear Leader’… “ (thebigpicture)

Thom Browne Yellow Vest for Spring/Summer 2010

Selectism - Thom Browne Yellow Vest for Spring/Summer 2010

Here is one of the more interesting pieces of rubber to hit the streets for Spring/Summer 2010. “One of the signature pieces from the Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2010 Collection has been released – the Yellow Vest. Styled after the classic all yellow rain coat, the vest has lots of technical details and subtle Thom Browne signature elements.” The full piece seems “classically” constricting but that well be the point.

More looks at the Thom Browne Yellow Vest for Spring/Summer 2010 here.
