The Gentlewoman Magazine

Selectism - the-gentlewoman-01.jpg

This is a little outside our remit, but we couldn’t ignore the release of The Gentlewoman, the sister title to Fantastic Man. As always, Magculture has the spreads and the info. While the women’s magazine market is, to say the least, a little crowded, it looks like The Gentlewoman is a cut above the rest. We’ve yet to get our mitts on a copy but judging from the spreads, it looks to be far more text led than Pop or Love magazine, which is a good thing if you loved Fantastic Man for its articles.

Take a look at some spreads from the magazine after the leap.

Selectism - IKEA Subway Display in Paris : An Insane Idea or A Genius Promotion Campaign?

01. IKEA Subway Display in Paris : An Insane Idea or A Genius Promotion Campaign? (above)

“From 10 to 24 March 2010, IKEA develops an interesting event in four important metro stations in Paris. Furniture collections are currently displayed in high-traffic spots, giving the potential customers a chance to interact with the brand by checking out the products. The subway walls are also filled with prints that showcase IKEA interiors. What a creative way to do advertising! Moreover, this action completely changes the way the Paris subway station look and creates a cool atmosphere. ” (freshhome)

02. Karl Lagerfeld Ships a 265-Ton Artic Glacier to Paris for Chanel’s Fashion Show

“We’ve heard about designers doing some crazy things, but this one may just take the prize. For Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2010 show Karl Lagerfeld imported a massive 265-ton glacier from northern Sweden, where over the course of six days 35 sculptors (flown in from around the world) whittled the icy block down to a 28-foot tall frozen landscape. For this brief one-time show, the Grand Palais itself was also kept at subzero temperature for extra Arctic effect. While we ‘re not quite sure how keen Karl is to the whole global warming situation, his musing to reporters on the issue certainly says a lot…” (inhabitant)

03. EBAY: Dieter Rams Braun Turntable Modernist Design 1961

“Designed in 1959, the PC 3-SV is the turntable element of Rams’ iconic SK 4 series. It’s plinth-mounted, has all the vinyl speeds you will require and is apparently in ‘fully working order’ and ‘excellent cosmetic condition’, as well as being available on ebay right now at just 99 pence. Will it end on that? I suspect not, but it’s worth a punt.” (retro2go)

04. British Soldier LSD Testing

“What happens to the army if you give them LSD? This is documentary evidence of an experiment testing just that, carried out on British marines in 1964…” (coudal>current)

Robert Geller Summer Bomber Jacket in Dark Green

Selectism - Robert Geller Summer Bomber Jacket in Dark Green

Blackbird drops a ton of pieces from the Rober Geller Spring 2010 collection online. My eyes were drawn to this dark green bomber. “Beautifully bathed in a saturated sea green, Robert Geller’s signature bomber takes design cues from the designer’s Spring ‘08 collection with multiple tonal lightweight fabrics working together to form a structured geometric motif that adds depth and distinctive personality to this military silhouette”

Fifty-Nine in ‘84

selectism - Fifty-Nine in '84

In 1884, Providence Gray’s pitcher Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn won 59 games. He won three in that years World Series, marking him a champion and solidifying the greatest pitching record in baseball history. Fifty-Nine in ‘84 Fifty Nine in 84 tells Radbourn’s tale and also captures the spirit of baseball in the 19th-century. It was rough and tough. The players drank hard, they thought nothing of cheating, and apparently didn’t much mind maiming an opponent either. Not dissimilar, probably, to proper football of the period. (By proper I am, of course, referring to soccer). There’s also a subtext of some boarding house action – the love of Radbourn’s life was said to have been quite friendly with every man in the National League.

The author of Fifty-Nine in ‘84 Fifty Nine in 84 is Edward Achorn, a former Pulitzer Prize finalist.

All in all, the book has the makings of a fantastic read. It releases tomorrow.

From Harper Collins. Available at Amazon Fifty Nine in 84 .

Selectism - Henrik Vibskov Leather Tote Bag

The beer in the photo is what sold me on this Common Projects Leather Tote available now from C Store. It is a tote and it finished in black leather. That about tells the story. More importantly, it works for the gents in a very “man” manner.

Selectism - Breitling SuperOcean Limited for 2010 Watch

Everyone is going bonkers over this leaked photo of the new Breitling Superocean. From what we can gather this will debut this coming week at Baselworld. What’s most interesting as a current Superocean owner is the new face. The yellow contrasts nicely against the dark casing. We’re assuming we’ll see some more colors debuted at the show. Here are all the sourced sites for this one.

Selectism - Florsheim by Duckie Brown Autumn 2010

Here’s a full look at the new Autumn 2010 collection from Florsheim by Duckie Brown. “The inspiration for the new line continues to come from the Florsheim archives. Daniel Silver and Steven Cox of Duckie Brown have infused deep, jewel-tone colors into these classic styles for a unique take on the men’s footwear market. Raisin, Cherry, Coal, and Dark Green are the feature colors for the Fall 2010 line. The classic Brogue pattern has matching upper and sole edge color treatments to make a truly unique product. Monochromatic shades of Cherry, Navy, and Dark Green juxtaposed to the traditional Brown and Black colors round out the package for the new line.”

Swann Auction Galleries Printed and Manuscript Americana Auction

selectism - Swann Auction Galleries Printed and Manuscript Americana Auction

Going down on March 18, 2010, Swann Auction Galleries’ “Printed and Manuscript Americana” auction features some sweet selections. Included is the archive of Stanley Yale Beach (lot 43) a pioneer in American innovation. The archive contains 3 linear feet of goodies, ranging from letters to photographs (one of which is above). Beach is remembered for financing Gustave Whiteheads attempts at flight, two years before the Wright brothers, and for failed attempts at engine design.

Another gem is the first edition of George A. Dodge’s A Narrative of a Whaling Voyage and its Incidents of 1888. Published in Salem, MA, the work (lot 254) describes a whaling trip out of Nantucket that began in 1831. Similarly exciting is lot 87, a chromolithograph titled “Broadway, N.Y. at Cortland Street. Departure of the 7th Reg’t N.Y.S.M. for the War 1861.” Great color and a stirring scene.

The auction will begin at 1:30 PM and is located at 104 East 25th Street, New York.
