Teenage Hoboes in the Great Depression

selectism - Teenage Hoboes in the Great Depression

The National Heritage Museum in Lexington, MA was founded by the Scottish Rite Masons of the Northern Jurisdiction of the United States as a gift on the occasion of the bicentennial.

It is an odd and amazing place. Their mission allows a unique approach to the telling of American history, and without any particular demands they are able to mount exhibitions on some stunning segments of Americana – for example there is now on view an exhibition dedicated to the American movie theater. Rolling through the website the other day I noticed Teenage Hoboes in the Great Depression. It’s an online exhibition, and it is really quite remarkable.

Over five sections the plight of many youths forced to abandon their homes is revealed through books, photographs and oral history. Well worth a few moments of your time.

Selectism - Symmetry Varg and Newman Scarves

This “Varg” and “Newman” scarves from the Symmetry Autumn 2010 collection is made from USA made Woolrich wool and features a leather band with brass beads that connect to two grommets. The band either holds the scarf close to the neck. They have other styles with brass chains… not a fan of those.

Selectism - John Varvatos Canvas Star Player High-Top Sneakers

Ok. I received some heat for placing the simple black Converse All-Star up on these pages. For those looking for more details check these “Canvas Star Player” from the John Varvatos collection for Converse. Here’s the big sell: “100% waxed canvas upper with pin stripe lining.”

Selectism - Boris Bidjan Saberi Pants

Two pairs of trousers dropped on Oki-ni today from the Boris Bidjan Saberi collection. The linen pair look Summer proper (thogh white does not usually work for me). “White linen trousers with a soft ribbed waistband and wire-lined hems for a strong silhouette. Detail with folded detail at the hips, these trousers are made from 100% linen finished with a ‘plaster’ effect.” Both pairs are handmade in Spain. Who doesnt love Spain?

Selectism - Delvaux by Bruno Pieters Newspaper Attache Briefcase

A solid three color varietal “newspaper” attaches from Delvaux as designed by bruno Pieteres. The soft leather is complemented by double strappings which allow for storage of newspapers and magazines. Perfect for the commuters. A high quality attache from a company that’s been around much longer than the world’s oldest living supercentenarian. (rumorsjp)

Dunhill Autumn/Winter 2010 Installation by Campaign

Selectism - Dunhill Autumn/Winter 2010 Installation by Campaign

This is our second look (first is here) at the Dunhill installation in NYC’s Meatpacking. We’re bringing it to attention once again with the help of strong images from Weheart. “Recreating, in a beautifully ghostly manner, Bourdon House – the London home of Alfred Dunhill – Campaign’s unique installation played host to dunhill’s Autumn/Winter 2010 collection in a fascinatingly unique interpretation of London’s buzzing Mayfair.”

Selectism - More MOSCOT Spring/Summer 2010 Eyewear

We covered the Secodn Edition Titanium series from MOSCOT yesterday. Today, a look at the “acetate” and “metal” frames coming for Spring/Summer 2010. The Nebb arrives in a shade of grey matte (I’m wearing matte grey frames at the moment) as does the “Zulu”  which is finished in  ”Matte Silver with Grey Temple Tips.”

Three Floyds Dark Lord Imperial Russian Stout

selectism - Three Floyd's Dark Imperial Russian Stout

Spring is in the air, and as such rather than just switch shoes you should also think about stocking your beer cellar properly.

Three Floyds Dark Lord is pretty damn seasonal. Sold one day of the year, on the appropriately named Dark Lord Day, the brew is made from intelligentsia coffee, Mexican vanilla, and Indian sugar. Apparently this mixture helps the beer to defy description. So I’ll just mention this – Dark Lord regularly receives top ratings from the brilliant brew hounds at Beer Advocate.

This year Dark Lord Day gets going on April 24.

What all happens on Dark Lord Day?

Dark Lord Day is the only day of the year to buy Three Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial stout. DLD is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, buy Dark Lord, try Oak Aged Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout, eat BBQ, listen to live music, and generally have a great time.

Seems pretty tremendous.

YMC Hunting Sweatshirt

selectism - ymc-hunting-sweatshirt-01

While YMC’s SS10 collection is almost too trendy (as in following trends instead of leading them) for our tastes – but it does it the mark in some spots. Take this ‘hunting’ sweatshirt for instance. We tried our best to hate on account of authenticity or some other erroneous reason, but we can’t. It’s a great looking piece – inauthentic, but great nonetheless. It’s not like you actually go hunting in your Junya Watanabe anyway. (End)

Song remains the same, take the leap to see detailed shots.

Mihara Yasuhiro for Topman Trench Coat

09 March 2010, 14.30 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - mihara-yasuhiro-topman-trench-coat

Despite having enough money to sip mo’ on a living room floor and play nintendo with Cease and Nino – A Biggie reference had to be shoehorned in somewhere today – Topman is still something of a dirty word amongst certain circles. While we’ve always maintained that their mainline range is overpriced for what it is, we’re still big fans of their collaborations.

Their latest trench project brings Mihara Yasuhiro (who falls into the ever widening ‘He’s Japanese so we like him’ bracket’) to play about with the traditional trench coat. The results are a dandy-esque coat that’s great for the guys who love looking sharp. (Topman)
