Video | iPad Advert

So here it is: the first advert for the device that will single-handedly save the publishing industry. We’re a little less convinced of its healing powers than others – if people aren’t willing to fork out for a £12 yearly subscription, they’re not going to pay upwards of £400 for a souped-up version of the same content – but the device is still an interesting one nonetheless.

Selectism - The Secret Cities of Yemen

01. The Cappuccino Car That Runs On Coffee… So Will You Have To Use The Filter Lane?

“The car will be driven the 210 miles between Manchester and London powered only by roasted coffee granules. It has been built by a team from the BBC1 science programme Bang Goes The Theory and will go on display at the Big Bang science fair in Manchester to show how fuels other than conventional petrol and diesel can power vehicles…” (dailymail)

02. From the Archives 03: A Brief Homage to Franklin Gothic

“The Franklin Gothic typeface is the primary influence for nearly all MoMA materials; it’s the basis of our logo (see the top of your screen) and our official font “MoMA Gothic,” which were both created by Matthew Carter. We were happy to see that MoMA used a version of Franklin Gothic as long ago as the 1930s. We found these printed materials in our archives while doing some research on our current identity.” (moma)

03. The Secret Cities of Yemen (above)

“Yemen has been in the news a great deal recently – because of its supposed links with the training of terrorists. Yet little attention has been paid to the country itself – particularly its rich and surprising architectural heritage. So little known outside the country this remarkable architecture has survived hundreds of years. Take a look at the secret cities of Yemen.” (coudal>trifter)

04. SGLight House / GRAU.ZERO

With the use of maxima deployment allowed by ground in its vertical projection, resulted the volume of the building. The idea was blend a sculpture image with architectural needs, making them ambiguous, was the proposal made to the owner, as a work premise.” (archdaily)

Selectism - Rochambeau Black Wrap Jersey T-Shirt

A  t-shirt with a structured neck wrap may not be the newest of ideas but when done well, it sets you apart from the Owens boys. NYC’s Rochambeau offers this garment for review. Since it made from 100% rayon, it is advisable to wear it [un]appropriately depending on your environment. “Super soft black sheer short sleeve tee with extra long attached scarf at sleeve. Unhemmed finishing.” 198$US puts this in your hands. OAK has it.

Selectism - MOSCOT "Titanium Second Edition" Frames Spring/Summer 2010

Following up on their first edition titanium eyewear, NYC’s own MOSCOT delivers their Zelig, Nebb, Miltzen, and Lemtosh in a second issue featuring the super light metal. “The German-made, Second Edition Titanium frames are constructed in two parts – the fronts, made of pure titanium and nickel-free, are strong, sturdy and hypoallergenic, and the frame temples, which are made of beta-titanium, a softer, more pliant material that can be easily adjusted for the perfect fit.” Well done as usual from MOSCOT. The grey tortoise temple tips are shown above.

Selectism - Rag & Bone for ODIN Jackets and Coats for Spring 2010

Rag & Bone issues a small collection of goods exclusive for ODIN NYC. The collection, part of their Spring/Summer 2010 offering, features coast, jackets, and shirts – all of which offer distinct pieces for each of us. We’ll focus on the jackets and coats in this look. The Work Utility Jacket is a favorite of mine. The short waist length (shirtlike) makes it a perfect fit for the 5′7″ guys. “Versatile jacket with rounded collar. Four front pockets with one button flap pocket, workable button cuffs, tab collar.” Be sure to check out the “Hunting Grouse” and trench as well.

British Auto Legends: Classics of Style and Design

selectism - British Auto Legends: Classics of Style and Design

Newly sized (to compact from “coffee table”), British Auto Legends: Classics of Style and Design British Auto Legends: Classics of Style and Design is about as self explanatory a publication as you’ll get. Though compact in size, the book remains comprehensive in view, offering a full unabridged tour of 50 of Britain’s best cars designed from 1907 to the present day. These automobiles are “exhilarating” and “seductive” – words chosen by Merrell Publishers – and the text provides full biographies of key designers – my guess being that section won’t be particularly exhilarating or seductive – but tied together the two portions of the book (images and biographies) should make for good car reading.

Expect nods to the Jaguar XJ-S and some quality old Bentley motors.

Available now from Amazon British Auto Legends: Classics of Style and Design.
