Uniqlo +J Trench Coat

05 March 2010, 16.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Selectism - Uniqlo-+j-olive-green-trench-coat

As you’ve probably seen from the abundance of LIFE archive images doing the blog rounds, a good trench will last you a lifetime. While we do like Uniqlo’s mainline version, we have a feeling that this +J version will last for a tad longer. The green colourway is a nice change from the usual beige and will help the next time you’re trying to get on the Sartorialist – unless everyone else reads this as well, then you’re back to square one. Norse Projects ‘Milkman’ Overshirt

Selectism - norse-projects-milkman-shirt-01

We’re all about the overshirt this spring. It’s an easy method of layering up and you’ll avoid the too hot/too cold problem that blights us when the weather’s still deciding which way it wants to go. What we really like about this piece (aside from the functional side pockets) is the space for pattern mixing. While you can be sensible shoe dave and wear it with a plain tee, a much better solution would be to be a nice contrasting pattern as an undershirt – the crazier the better.  (Goodhood)

Spring Court B2 Mid Leather Trainers

Selectism - springcourt-b2-mid-leather-trainers-01

Spring’s here, the sun’s shining, so it’s time to bring those white trainers out of retirement. Our love for the air sole is well documented – and it’s a love affair that shows no signs of slowing down. A good mid-level trainer will take you from the start of spring to the heights of summer (when you be going sockless in your lows) and the price is a little higher than usual, but they’re still a long way from a bank buster. Just remember to cuff your denim if you want to avoid the ‘blue blood’ situation that occurs when quality denim and white trainers collide. (Oi Polloi)

Take that leap to see detailed images.

Selectism - Bugatti 16 C Galibier Edition Automobile

01. Gear Shift Lever By Thonet

“From German furniture brand Thonet, automotive design in the form of a gear shift lever for the new Volvo C70. The gear shift lever will be presented at the Geneva International Motor Show which is on now.” (moco)

02. Sweden Aims for 2000 New Wind Turbines, 50% Renewable Energy by 2020

“Maud Olofsson, Sweden’s Enterprise and Energy Minister, announced recently the addition of 2,000 wind turbines to the country’s alternative energy regimen. The move, which would be rolled out over the next ten years would add 10 terawatt hours of clean energy per year to their grid. But is that enough for the Scandinavian country? Apparently not because they’ve also set a goal for themselves to have 50 percent (yes, half!) of their electricity come from renewable sources by 2020!” (inhabitant)

03. Bugatti 16 C Galibier Edition Automobile (above)

“The stunning Bugatti 16 C Galibier Edition concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. Explore more Bugatti .” (notcot)

04. Roly Poly Iron Prefers Not to Burn Down Your House [Concepts]

“The Roly Poly Iron is loaded with an extra set of weights. When you hold it, these weights shift inside the handle, making the horizontal positioning natural. But as soon as you let go, sensors note your recklessness and shift the weights properly to actually stand the iron back up on its hind legs…defiantly.” (gizmodo)

Editor’s Selections | John Varvatos Spring/Summer 2010

Selectism - Editor's Selections | John Varvatos Spring/Summer 2010

The John Varvatos Spring/Summer 2010 collection is now available online for browsing and acquisition.  Fans of Varvatos  (new and old) will happily discover a variety of pieces that will complement their wardrobes from top to bottom.

While we would usually cover new collections with an overall appraisal of the line, the folks at Varvatos have asked our staff to select their personal picks for consumption from their Spring/Summer offering. We’re calling them “Editor’s Selections” for short. And just like the football loyalty we discussed earlier in the week, you’ll find our “selections” to be fairly unique to each of us. This week, we’re starting it off with London’s own Jason Dike.

Jason’s picks should come as no surprise to our readers. The John Varvatos Suede Filmore Chukka and the Convertible Pick Stitch Jacket (shown above) are about as proper as it gets. We’ll let Jason tell you why.

Ogreen Chill 29 Eyeglass Frames

Selectism - Ogreen Chill 29 Eyeglass Frames

In the past, we covered the Ogreen “Featherweight” frames. Today, Esquire UK turns us onto a new acetate based frame, the “Chill 29.” “The frames are made by hand in Japan from materials that include acetate and titanium, which makes them surprisingly comfortable and light to wear. Production of the frames involves 100 separate operations, over the course of about six months. That makes it even more gruelling than the process of choosing a pair of frames from Orgreen’s vast range.”

Selectism - Lacoste for United Arrows Polo Shirts

Our polo fans will be excited to see this offering from Lacoste for Japan’s United Arrows. The “Big Boarder” and “Piping Skipper” are explored through black and white variations and color blocking. A subtle contrasting piping on the sleeves finishes these off well.

Gareth Pugh Autumn/Winter 2010 Runway

Selectism - Gareth Pugh Autumn/Winter 2010 Runway

CqC brings us looks from Gareth Pugh’s Autumn/Winter 2010 runway presentation. The three looks above are what I consider to be the most conservative from this collection which focuses strongly on silhouettes that look cut (or rather borrow) from certain oversized characteristics usually found in a feminine collection. That is not to take away from the progression of fashion towards new terrain which may not be fully embraced… yet. The long overcoat (seen in the gallery) should wake up the comments section.

selectism - Design by Supergrau

Clocked Supergrau today via this fantastic leather saddle. It’s essentially a magnetic knife block, capable of holding 8 knives, but a damn sight sexier than the normal. It fits over several cutting boards, thus providing handsome storage for those too. The chosen material, leather, clearly well-suited to the aging that scraps and cuts will undoubtedly manage. We like aged boots, so why not well aged kitchen accessories too?

Supergrau was founded earlier this year and provides really nice twists to typical home needs. All pieces are hand-crafted near their home base of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Selectism - Selima Hats for Spring/Summer 2010

Here’s a look at some hats (some unisex) from the Selima collection. “Each hat is hand blocked, then hand sewn in New York City in a discreet atelier below Selima’s Bond 07 shop on Bond Street. Promeyrat and her design team thoughtfully customize each hat with vintage and antique trimmings… The Spring/Summer 2010 collection from Selima hats features a range of shapes including two unisex fedoras, a capeline, a bowler… they arrive in a… hatbox that is useful for… storage. ”
