Selectism - Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons for Bblessing Lapel Pins

Derrick Cruz of Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons worked with the minds behind Bblessing on a set of lapel pins that take inspiration from a time long ago. “Each pin has a symbol on it that represents the original seven planets from the Ptolemaic worldview [which include the Sun and the Moon].” The lapels are finished in bronze for that authentic age.

B Store Autumn/Winter 2010

selectism - b-store-autumn-2010-01

With their first foray into womenswear under their belts, B Store have released these images of the Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. This collection is based on ‘an imagined, faded, aristocratic family spending the weekend at the family’s country estate, Wyndham’. The end result is very english aristocrat (suits permeate the collection) meets workwear, with an array of parkas, checked shirting and oversized knitwear making their way into the collection. With bags created in collaboration with accessories designer Kuni Awai, this is very much a collection for those for like their workwear with a twist. And for the record, we’re still dead set against leggings as outerwear.

Take a leap to see the rest of the collection.

Niman Ranch Strip Steaks

selectism - Niman Ranch Strip Steaks

Thanks to a food critic brother, I ate one of these fine strip steaks for breakfast. Niman Ranch meat has been called “the best of the best” and comes from Angus breeds grown on pasture and finished with all-vegetarian feed. The result is a highly marbled strip (or most other cuts too) brought to the table in the most human and sustainable fashion.

Niman Ranch has been at the forefront of sustainable agriculture for 30 years. Over that time the firm has grown to include over 650 independent ranchers and specializes in hogs, beef and lamb. Regardless of the meat, all products adhere to the same strict protocol.

When it’s time to spend money on something other than clothes, buy a good steak from Niman Ranch.

Folk Raglan Shirt

selectism - folk-raglan-peacock-shirt-01

We know it’s March now, but we’re still on the hunt for some sale picks. And before you ask, yes, we’re that cheap. Now’s probably the best time to find something that would have been out of your price bracket  – like this Folk shirt. Made from some seriously heavy duty Japanese cotton, it was worth the money at full price (£220); now it’s a certified bargain at £120. We know that price still isn’t cheap per se, but we always advise on spending more on the sort of piece you’d wear all the time – watching your clothes age gracefully is preferable to watching them disintegrate. (Folk)

Manzine Issue Three

04 March 2010, 14.30 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

Selectism - manzine-01.jpg

Magculture turns us onto the news that one of our favourite men’s magazines, Manzine, has just released their third issue. With a free print from longtime Hunter S. Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman stashed amongst articles on great British trees, political beard infographics and a visit to former Iraqi embassy in East Berlin, it’s not your typical men’s magazine. If you still need a heads up on their sense of humour, take a look at the above spread – no prizes on who they’re mocking. As usual you can buy it straight from the source (Manzine)

Selectism - lad-musician-military-officer-shoes-01

Here’s some surprisingly sensible shoes from a good ol’ SL fave. Lad Musician, known for their love of all things music related, have released these handsome devils out as part of their SS10 collection. They’re not game changers, but they’re definitely a change of pace from the label. As with all Japan releases, you’ve gotta get your proxy on to get hold of these. (Lad Musician)

Selectism - James Small Autumn/Winter 2010 Runway

James Small came charging through the gates of London Fashion Week with his menswear day show. The former assistant to Kim Jones also employed a deep arsenal of celebs to transpot at his show. The good thing is that the line was well worth the looks. James Small clearly takes strong influence from his home country’s heritage; all the while providing new styles fit for all gents. (change)

Benches and Binoculars at Walker Art Center

walkerart front Benches and Binoculars at Walker Art Center

Walker Art Center reminds that all art was once contemporary in the current installation Benches and Binoculars. The galleries are crowded with masterpieces and oddities from the Walker’s collection, indicative of both past artistic trend and the institutions own history. By utilizing a salon style hanging (as seen above in the installation view), the Walker makes a nod to founder T.B. Walker and creates an unusual narrative for the selected material. As such, its a rather fun way of rediscovering the likes of Max Beckmann, Chuck Close, and Marsden Hartley. (via Curated).

The exhibition remains on view through November 21, 2010.

Examples from the show follow.
