Chris Milliman “Four-Stroke and Two”

selectism - Chris Milliman "Four-Stroke and Two"

Recently featured, photographer Chris Milliman’s latest work Four-Stroke and Two details the lively world of snowmobile racing. Yes, the season’s are changing, but we figured “to hell with it” let’s give one last salute to winter. The series will debut fully in 2011.

Milliman’s statement about the work -

Four-Stroke and Two is a study in the nature of parallel worlds. You can find these scenes all over, the participants all in. Right here, custom built super-charged snowmobiles rocketing to 145 mph in under 5 seconds. Preceded by hours and hours in the garage, bloody knuckles, frost bite, and ear plugs. But it could be anything and it’s running along next to us, so take a different line and here’s what you see.

A continued preview of Four-Stroke and Two after the jump.

Lanvin Embroidered Tie Pins for Autumn 2010

Selectism - Lanvin Embroidered Tie Pins for Autumn 2010

Lanvin does the tie pin well with their Autumn 2010 series. A bunch of sites pulled this one but Slam says it best. “Embroidered skulls and owl faces, moving along a totem-pole meets day of the dead-esque aesthetic, along with Lanvin written in orange and blue with contrasting outlines we think these are the coolest yet. All great for both guys and girls these small little details will finish off any great suit blazer perfectly. Also available in cuff link styles too.”

Selectism - Maison Martin Margiela Opens in Miami

The Maison Martin Margiela house opened their 19th store this month in Miami in the form of “Temporary.”  Surprisingly, it is only their second third retail location in the United States after New York City and LA. “Maison Martin Margiela has, since it’s founding in 1988, made Paris its home. Now, twenty one years later it opens Maison Martin Margiela, Miami, temporary home to the Maison Martin Margiela collections in Miami’s Design District. Following the F Factory Limited Edition Experiences, it was only logical to find a temporary location in the Miami Design District. Many will immediately ask as to exactly how temporary “Temporary” is! The Maison Martin Margiela’s reply to this is ‘However long it takes to find our dream home….. Yet temporary this location is!’ “

Kenton Sorenson Laptop Portfolio

Selectism - Kenton Sorenson Laptop Portfolio

If you haven’t noticed by now, we’re on the lookout for a handsome laptop case. This Kenton Sorenson number looks like it could do the job rather handily. According to the folks at Context, there’s enough room for a laptop, a magazine and some paper work. The leather’s of the vegetable tanned kind, ensuring it’ll only look better as it ages. The price may look a little steep, but this is a piece that you won’t regret buying in a few years time. (Context)

After the leap is another look at the bag.

Opening Ceremony Patchwork Shirt

opening ceremony patchwork shirt 00 Opening Ceremony Patchwork Shirt

Patchwork shirts are guaranteed to get a marmite response either here or on the twitter, but we personally still like ‘em. They can be hit or miss, but when executed correctly – as it is in this shirt right here – they’re as easy to wear as a plain oxford. Spring hasn’t really sprung yet – as anyone caught out in those random downpours will know – so be sure to wear this under a couple of layers. (Opening Ceremony)

Sang Bleu Issue 5

selectism - sang-bleu-magazine-01

Forgive us, we’re a little late to this party. The new issue of Sang Bleu did the blog rounds a while back but we didn’t want to post it up until we got our hands on it. Best described as a tattoo-focused arts magazine, each issue is published as two volumes – making it well worth the £24 price tag – and there’s no corners cut when it comes to the design techniques that make magazines worth collecting. 01. It’s Not Dry Yet

“FEW modern myths about art have been as persistent or as annoying as the so-called death of painting. Unless, of course, it is the belief that abstract and representational painting are oil and water, never to meet as one.” (NYT).

02. The Making of the Wu Massacre Covers

“When the covers for Method Man, Ghostface and Raekwon’s Wu Massacre project began leaking online, bloggers and fans alike were just as open about the artwork as the idea of collaborative album. The illustrated cover—as well as the three collector’s edition variants and single art—are the handy work of comic book kingpin Chris Bachalo, whose drawings have been seen on the pages of Captain America, Incredible Hulk and Uncanny X-Men, and on the hit TV series, Heroes.” (xxl)

03. Mies van der Rohe’s Lake Shore Drive Restoration / Krueck & Sexton Architects

“Widely recognized as one of the 20th Century’s most iconic residential projects, 860-880 Lake Shore Drive consists of two 26-story rectangular condominium buildings surrounded by an irregular travertine plaza. The steel and glass towers are connected by a covered walkway. In addition to more than half a century of normal wear and tear, the buildings had endured several restoration attempts over the years. The problems included corrosion of the building’s exposed steel frame, failure of the lobby glazing system and extensive cracking and discoloration of the travertine plaza.” (Arch Daily).

04. 2011 Hennessey Venom GT (above)

“Since 1991, Hennessey Performance Engineering has been in the business of taking crazy-fast cars such as Dodge Vipers, Ford GTs, and Chevrolet Corvettes and turning them into tire-melting monsters for only the most talented (and well-heeled) of drivers. But these may all have been mere warm-up acts for its wildest and most unique supercar ever, the upcoming Venom GT.” (Car and Driver).

Gentemstick Boards

Selectism - Gentemstick Boards

Cool Hunting turns us onto the world of  Gentemstick board. “Japanese designer and inveterate snowboarder Taro Tamai has been hand-shaping his eye-catching Gentemstick boards for over a decade. An answer to the homogenization of board shapes that happened as snowboarding gained mainstream appeal, Tamai’s goal is no less than to “perfectly blend into the terrain miraculously made of snow and wind, just as if birds flying in the sky or fish flowing in the stream.” The upshot of his philosophical approach to the sport (he calls it snow-surfing) is a line of boards renowned for their flexible fins, oversized sized fish tails and rideability in almost any snow condition.”
