Civil Ink by Rick Fichter

25 March 2010, 21.24 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - civil ink

How many times have you heard “former NHL player,” and thought “art”? Probably never.

After high school, Rick Fichter took a place at Princeton, where he was to play hockey and lacrosse. On the advice of a coach (who, said “play there and never play in the pros”), Fichter jumped ship and played several seasons in the AHL, occasionally being called up to tough it in the big time with the Buffalo Sabers (10 games makes you a former NHL player).

Though athletics have certainly played a large roll in Fichter’s life, so too has the arts. He grew up in the printing trade, his family operating a letter press print company. As a youth, Fichter began to design logos for friends and family and his passion grew into the founding of 168Design in 1997. Family ties are big in Fichter’s life (he is proud father of four sons) and a distant relation, one General Custer, provided the inspiration for his first set of publicly available drawings and prints – Civil Ink.

Handsomely conceived, Civil Ink includes nods to the War’s uniforms and fire arms. The prints are all hand inked and will go on display at Sugar Cube, 124 N. 3rd, Philadelphia, PA, from April 2, 2010.

Full preview after the jump.

Robert Geller eyewear has always been a Selectism favorite. Max Bill By Junghans Watches For 2010

Selectism - Max Bill By Junghans Watches For 2010

ABTR discusses the “”concrete Bauhaus” of watches, the Max Bill. “The ‘Max Bill watch’ as it is known is one of the 20th Century’s most famous watch designs. Clearly conceived by designer and architect Max Bills in Switzerland, the watch was a staple of goodness back when it was originally made in the 1960s. Since then you could buy versions of the watch in its pure form as made by German Junghans (who I believe is owned by Seiko). For 2010 Junghans offers up a more modern, but still retro version of this retro classic. There are three versions of the watches and most exciting is their more modern dimensions (save for the still small manually wound version).”

Jas M.B. Canvas Vintage Rucksack

selectism - jas-mb-vintage-canvas-rucksack-01

We’ve liked the rucksacks doing the rounds but they’re all a bit…petite. Personally, we’d like something a little heft to it, something like this bag right here. It’s hard to express how big a bag is without giving the measurements but, as we’ve been wearing this around town for a while now, this bag isn’t for the folks who only carry a moleskine. It’s made from a durable canvas, the leather is tough as old boots and it’s also made in England if you’re a stickler for that sort of thing. (ASOS)

Stack | The Man behind Manzine

selectism - Manzine

Stack magazine have a great interview with the founder of Manzine, Kevin Braddock. Talking about aspirational magazines, the aims of Manzine and the physical making of the magazine from start to finish. Although the whole interview’s a great read, we especially liked his answer about why Manzine exists:

I also think fundamentally it exists because it’s funny – a lot of magazines these days are far too serious, so in our case there’s no great meaning or narrative or message to what we’re doing, it’s just funny little thoughts. I gave it to Simon Mills, who’s another seasoned men’s magger, and he said it’s sort of like Seinfeld, because it’s a magazine about nothing in a way, but it’s all the nothing stuff that’s entertaining.

Brooklyn Circus Brogue Boots

25 March 2010, 09.30 | Posted in Shoes | No comments »

selectism - brooklyn-circus-wingtip-bootsWe’re kicking off the morning with some handsome boots. These Brooklyn Circus numbers have been handmade in the USA and because of that, numbers are extremely limited (1 of each size). We’re know the blogs are in love in longwings right now, but we still prefer some good ol’ english brogueing. And if you don’t know by now, The Brooklyn Circus’ blog is one of the best store blogs out, so be sure to give that a read when you’re done drooling over these boots. (Brooklyn Circus)
