People, this beautiful photo was brought to you by Selectism’s newest Columnist, Aaron Panone. Simply put, his food recipes and photography are helping to push Selectism to new readers and food loves alike. Mr. Panone’s background is not in food though. Amazingly, he does everything from designing heart valves to bicycle chainrings. But, damn, how can we resist his food. While we did not make anymore of a notice than a Twitter post on Aaron joining our Columns, he’s clearly drawing some impact as the feedback has been solid.

Here’s the recipe (well a quick snippet):

The Process:

made some cashew butter by grinding up 2c. or so of raw cashews with 3-4tsp. of canola oil (a splash at first and then add until at the desired consistency), a pinch of sugar (to taste), and a pinch of salt (to taste). reduced some sweetened condensed milk into a medium-thick dulce de leche syrup/cream. smothered some iggy’s whole wheat sourdough with the dulce de leche, followed by the cashew butter, placed some sliced bananas on top, smeared the other side with a nice meaty organic apricot jam, and put it together. served with some nice honeydew melon.

It’s only been few years since designer, Yui Hashimoto, began his Ethosens collection. After presenting in Paris in 2008, the designer continues to flow his “Gentleman” collection to an audience that looks for the modern “Japan” take on fashion. 3.1 Phillip Lim is offering two eyeglass frames exclusive to their Los Angeles and NYC shops. “The ‘Donahue’ is a Navigator style with brow bars – the metal and plastic combination match retro shapes re-interpreted through metal detailing. It has gold foil printing on the inside. The color palette covers unique combinations such as dark gun metal and matte black acetate. Handmade in Japan, the style is available in optical as well as with sun lenses.”

Ah. A celebration. Today is Steve McQueen’s birthday and in honor of him NOWNESS delivers a photo essay on his romance off screen. “In 1956, Steve McQueen was just another good-looking village beatnik, studying at the Actors Studio and dabbling in theater. Then he crossed paths with Neile Adams on a Manhattan sidewalk. A rising Broadway star, Adams was known around town as beautiful, sharp, independent and driven. Their chemistry was immediate and electrifying, and they connected over their troubled childhoods: Born in Beech Grove, Indiana, Terrence Steven McQueen came of age in a boys’ reform school, while the Manila-born Adams survived a POW camp in the Philippines. McQueen drove her on the back of his Triumph and introduced her to the village scene of the 1950s, the coffee houses, poetry circles and speakeasies.”

Some new shoes from Oliver Spencer for Topman in the form of a capsule collection set to hit stores on May 10th. “The collection focuses on one style of boot and one style of shoe all incorporating a unique brick red EVA wedge sole design which Oliver has championed through his own range of shoes to great acclaim. All boots are traditional desert boot style available in either navy blue, stone and chocolate brown suede whilst the shoe is an oxford style toe cap available in both navy blue and off white nubuck with white stitching.”

We’ve gotta admit, we’d never thought of wearing a smock before. But now we see it, it does look like a useful halfway house between overshirt and light jacket. Of course it wouldn’t be suitable in the heat of summer, but it’d be nice for those days when it’s warm and rainy (like today, if you’re in the UK). And at £85, the price isn’t too hard to swallow either. (Daniel Jenkins)

Here’s one for the folks who like their shirts with a difference. Christopher Shannon has been been making waves on the fashion side of things for a while but his clothes also translate into ‘real’ life rather well. Take this panelled shirt for example, it’s not too crazy, not too expensive and, as shown, would work well with some worn-in denim. (C Store)
