SeaVees 08/65 Boating Moccasin

selectism - SeaVees 08/65 Boating Moccasin

In August of 1965, Robin Lee Graham hoisted the sails his 24-foot sloop, Dove, and left Southern California to circumnavigate the globe on a solo voyage. He returned in 1970, the youngest (at that time) to complete the task. Graham’s adventure was documented in National Geographic, recounted in his own book Dove, and became subject of a Gregory Peck-produced feature film.

Now, in 2010, the spirit of Graham’s voyage has been channeled by SeaVees for their 08/65 Boating Moccasin. The toe is hand-stitched with waxed thread and the sole is fitted with SeaVees signature herring bone. Upper options include a tumbled pull-up full-grain leather or hairy suede.

First Look | COS Autumn/Winter 2010

Selectism - cos-autumn-2010-01

Alongside Uniqlo, COS remain one of the few high street stores we’d actually recommend. Whilst a couple of COS’s most recent collections could be accused of overdoing it on the workwear influences, the AW10 collection has the balance just right, with quilted shirts being teamed with snoods, sharply tailored trousers and blazers. Elsewhere, there’s duffles, coated cotton jackets, the now-standard cropped trouser and sleek corduroy in the rest of the collection, which you can see after the leap.

Sunspel Autumn/Winter 2010

Selectism - sunspel-autumn-2010-03

Depending on where you’re based, Sunspel are either known for their polo shirts or undergarments. And regardless of what you know them for, everyone knows their pieces are well made pieces which are still made in their England based factory. They’re also celebrating their 150th anniversary this year, which sees them open up shop in Shoreditch and launch a heritage collection. Their AW10 collection furrows the same territory as before – t-shirts, boxer shorts and undershirts – as well as adding some so-retro-it’s-up-to-date patterns on their bath robes.

Take a look at their collection after the leap.

Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art

selectism - "Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art"

Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art plays host to “Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art” through July 25, 2010.

About the exhibition -

The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangzi River in China is the world’s largest generator of hydro-electric power. When it was built, it displaced more than one million people and submerged more than 1,200 towns. This spring, the Nasher Museum presents “Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art,” in which four leading contemporary Chinese artists—Chen Qiulin, Yun-Fei Ji, Liu Xiaodong and Zhuang Hui—respond to the dam project.

Opening Ceremony Linen Bomber

Selectism - opening-ceremony-linen-bomber-01

Here’s a piece that’ll look great on the vertically challenged. Speaking from bitter experience, cropped jackets have a tendency to look like something from a younger sibling’s wardrobe when worn by anyone over 6′2. But if you’re under that barrier then this Opening Ceremony linen bomber is a great look. The ribbed collar works well when ‘popped’ and it’s suitable mid-weight enough to pass the spring jacket test. And before you ask, no, we wouldn’t wear that shirt. (Opening Ceremony)

Detailed images after the leap.

Selectism | Around the Web

01. Cilantro Haters, It’s Not Your Fault

“Food partisanship doesn’t usually reach the same heights of animosity as the political variety, except in the case of the anti-cilantro party. The green parts of the plant that gives us coriander seeds seem to inspire a primal revulsion among an outspoken minority of eaters.” (NYT).

02. The Hollywood Sign Hotel

Every now and then, we find some crazy ideas around the web. What about this one?  Christian Bay – Jørgensen, owner of Bay Arch, has an idea to turn the famous Hollywood Sign into an hotel. This could solve the money/land issues that have been surrounding the sign lately. The plan calls for the famous letters to be enlarged to double the size, building them out from the back, allowing guests to stay inside the Hollywood sign itself. (arch daily).

03. Man City players get extremely metrosexual about it

Now, unlike our dungareed lesbian colleagues, The Spoiler doesn’t like to partake either of these two things: 1. The dark art of stereotyping. And 2. The Spoiler never EVER makes assumptions. Which is why today is making for a very rare day indeed, as an assumption has grown in the vast Spoiler offices that the Man City players were so put out – so damn angry – at their lack of representation on our recent football metrosexuals list, that they went so far as to put on a dreamy fashion show. (thespoiler).

04. Hut-Hut Modern “Rocking Horse” by Kalon Studios (above)

“If you want to hook your little one up with a rocking horse but worry that a colorful wooden pony won’t exactly match the rest of the grown up decor in your living room, check out Hut Hut! Designed by Kalon Studios and debuting this week at the Milan Design Fair in Italy, this modern “rocking horse” has the best of both worlds – fun for your child and sleek lines for you! Plus it’s made in the states out of FSC certified danish cedar, walnut, cork, maple, or bamboo.” (inhabitat).

Selectism - Coachella Survival Pack by Illesteva Sunglasses

Tomorrow all you hippies will make your way onto the Polo Grounds of Indio for the start of Coachella (yes, I wish I was a hippie and with you). We’re pretty sure that Sunday is the beast of the three-way, but hell, LCD will demo it tomorrow night. Back to the news, Illesteva drops a special “Coachella Survival Pack” of sunglasses for the show. Unless you already have on eyeglasses, you’ll need them (sans any weather issues). Look around for them as they’ll be handed out to the select is you can find them. Included in the pack: Illesteva Beca Sunglasses made from Italian Steel, SPF 30 Sunscreen,  lip balm, condoms (shocker), IBU pills, insect repellant, and a flashlight, ensuring that you can do it all in the dark. I could quote a W.A.S.P. track but I’ll stop here…

Selectism - Paul Smith Sand Suede Moccasin Boots

Paul Smith is a brand you either love or hate depending on where in the world you reside. In some lands, the brand may be overkill. Luckily in these parts, they still work. These moc boots are money. “Sand suede moccasin boots with a lace fastening through small suede tabs including 2 red ones. Boots have a multistripe pull-on tab, a red brand authentic badge on the tongue and 2 gold rivets on the side.” (MM)
