APC Suede Weekend Bag

selectism - apc-suede-weekend-bag

We’ve always been weird about suede bags – how they will hold up in rain? Despite that, this bag is just too purdy for us to deny. If we did have to nitpick one thing, it’d be that this is more of an overnight bag than a weekend one. (Tres Bien)

Uniqlo +J Purple Windbreaker

We thought we’d  celebrate the good news that Jill Sander will design for Uniqlo indefinitely by showing off this windbreaker jacket. Lightweight and packable, it’s one to keep in your bag for a rainy day. There’s a few colourways but this purple one ticks all our sartorial boxes. And, to top it all off, it only costs £50. Selectism - What Happens During an Espresso Extraction

1. 48hr Magazine

“We’ll unveil a theme and you’ll have 24 hours to produce and submit your work. We’ll take the next 24 to snip, mash and gild it. The end results will be a shiny website and a beautiful glossy paper magazine, delivered right to your old-fashioned mailbox. We promise it will be insane. Better yet, it might even work.” (48hr-mag)

2. Ze Frank’s Chillout Song

“I received an email from a woman named Laura, who had recently moved to a new city for a new job.
She was overwhelmed with anxiety and asked me to write her a song to help her calm down.” (zefrank)

3.  Steve Jobs’s ‘Thoughts On Flash’

“Apple has a long relationship with Adobe… I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads.” (apple)

4. What Happens During an Espresso Extraction (above)

“Espresso sure is a complicated elixir for being so small. Like Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity, a high-quality shot can be multilayered and complex: rich, sexy, sweet, but also fast and smooth—maybe even a little dangerous—with a hint of a bitter edge.” (seriouseats)

5. Pepsi’s Reverse Vending Machine Pays You to Recycle

“Traditional vending machines require cash before providing folks with a tasty beverage. The Dream Machine, a new type of vending kiosk, embraces a much cooler concept: It gives you points and prizes in exchange for an empty bottle or can. Organizers hope the reverse vending machine will encourage recycling when people are away from home and without access to a convenient recycling bin.” (inhabitat)

Cars, Culture, and the City

cars city front Cars, Culture, and the City

While Manhattan is decidedly unfriendly when it comes to cars, the City of New York has an undeniable history with the automobile. Recognizing this fact, the Museum of the City of New York explores the relationship between the automobile and the Big Apple in Cars, Culture, and the City. It is the first exhibition to tackle the subject, drawing from photographs, film, advertisements, and a wealth of other ephemera. Additionally, Cars, Culture, and the City recognizes some of the visionary advancements made to the car in New York with a look at an exceptional collection of drawings and models.

On view through August 8, 2010. (via Curated).

KZO Gibson Sweat Shorts

Selectism - KZO Gibson Sweat Shorts

OK, third time is a charm. Another pair of sweat shorts. You all just loved the last two sets we put up. KZO’s Gibson shorts may work for you. “A soft pair of sweat-shorts with buttons at the hem for a slight taper option. Zip pockets, key hoop hardware and drawstring waistband.” Now, at 165$US (from ODIN) they may still be up there for some. I personally think these may be the best pair we have found yet. If you got better, please do recommend over.

Color of Music Exhibition by George Benson

Selectism - Color of Music Exhibition by George Benson

Here is a wonderful exhibition of photography by Geroge Benson that uses the hardformat of music and the colors they hold to visually establish a mood that goes beyond the vinyl hidden within. Showing now at West Midlands Open 2010, Birmingham Art Gallery & Museum.

“A series of photographs exploring and titled the colour of music. The series purely looks at the colour of the record sleeves grouping music by colour alone, mixing rich cross genres of sound together. The unseen collection of music, avoids the need to name or identify to influence or be known. Instead the photographs create a rhythm of colour, light and shade that resonates with its musical content.” (inqmnd)

Rick Owens “To Pop A Boner” Furniture Exhibition

Selectism - Rick Owens “To Pop A Boner” Furniture Exhibition

Angelika Taschen has spearheaded this new exhibition from Selectism favorite Rick Owens. “Best known for his fashion design, Rick Owens has been creating furniture since 2005 already. German publisher Angelika Taschen has known Owens since their years in Los Angeles and now presents his furniture collection for the first time in Germany, during the Berlin Gallery Weekend. Located on the upper floor of iconic store Apartment Berlin, the exhibition showcases several items from the Rick Owens furniture collection, including tables, chairs, lamps, as well as smaller design objects. In his furniture pieces the artist uses a lot of colored plywood, bones and just like his clothing collection, he tends to stick to the darker colors.” (hs)

selectism - Skinner Wine Auction

Boston’s Skinner Auctions will host its spring wine sale on May 13, 2010. Apart from over 500 lots of vintage Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italian, Spanish and New World wines, I’m really impressed by the attention taken in the catalogue. The sale is handled by specialist Marie Keep of Lower Falls Wine Shop (which is super) in Newton Lower Falls, MA.

Bidding will begin promptly at 6pm. Check out all the lots at Skinner. Examples from the catalogue follow.
