Selectism - Bed Stu Autumn 2010 Footwear and Bags

While Bed Stu’s official Autumn 2010 is not ready yet, they have been kind enough to send over some early looks for out viewing pleasure. We’ve featured their Cobbler Series in the past and continue to be impressed with their offerings. A few man bags are also previewed in these looks. More to come as we get it.

Selectism - Basslike Autumn/Winter 2010

Australia’s Bassike line is a collection of basic goods developed and tailored with a high end feel. The three year old label’s description of themselves may suffer a bit from an overuse of adjectives but that should not take away from the simplicity of these garments – and that works.

Lou Dalton Gold Twill Coat

Selectism - lou-dalton-gold-twill-coat-01

Don’t be put off by the world gold in the title – no one will confuse you with midas in this coat. Spring’s finally sprung for most folks but it’s still not quite t-shirt weather yet – so that means it’s time to bring out the unlined coats. We were quite the fans of Dalton’s outerwear (as you can see) and this jacket is a perfect example of why we’re such cheerleaders for it. While we’re sure some folks will dismiss this as a ‘fashion’ range – probably muttering some nonsense about men wearing the same oxford shirts being a movement – but this is reasonably priced (£250), well made and locally produced. What more could you ask for? (Daniel Jenkins)

Selectism - garbstore-denim-blazer-01

We don’t really have much use for blazers these days, where will we wear them to? But we’re always aware that there might be a day when we need to fix up and a blazer like this would be great for such an occasion. We did feature this in our seven days shoot, so take a leap to see how we’d put it together in an outfit. (Garbstore)

Muji A6 Notebook

selectism - muji-a6-notebook

I’ve never understood expensive notebooks. We feature a lot of them but there are three of us here and we don’t always agree on everything. While I understand the argument that you can’t cheap out on clothing, why can’t you scrimp on paper? All you’re ever gonna do is write on it and then throw it away. Unlike a pair of shoes, paper is never going to last longer just because you spent more money on it or think Hemingway once used one.

This writer personally prefers notebooks like this. At 60p a pop, you can stock up on them, use them – something most Moleskine owners are a little scared to do – and throw them away as you please. Like we’ve said before, overspend on clothes and underspend on everything else – your wardrobe will thank you. (Muji)

“Day Job?” the Photo Exhibition

curated mag - "Day Job?" the Photo Exhibition

Congratulations are due to our friend Eugene Kan. His passion for photography well documented, Kan’s has organized “Day Job?” the Photo Exhibition, opening this Friday in Hong Kong.

Like Kan, the participating photographers in “Day Job?” are amateur. They are, strictly speaking, “hobbyists.” Yet, each has an eye for the moment and a knack for capturing the spirit of place. Besides, the people selected by Kan are also noted creatives – artists, designers, and writers – and their skill in other mediums of visual communication is not lost behind the camera.

Each photograph presented is available framed and printed with archival ink. Proceeds from the sale will go to benefit the International Center of Photography (a bloody fine institution, in our opinion).

“Day Job?” the Photo Exhibition, April 9, 2010.
31 Eastern Street
Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Video | Popular Science uses Mag+

06 April 2010, 10.30 | Posted in Books & Magazines | 2 comments »

Do you remember the Mag+ prototype from a while back? Well, they’ve teamed up with Popular Science magazine to create a digital magazine app for the newly launched iPad. The video above demonstrates how the app works and talks through the thinking behind it. While the prototype was nice and pretty, it’s much more exciting to see it working on a real-world device. We also found a review and demonstration of some magazine apps (including Popular Science), take a leap to see the video.

selectism - selectism around the web

01. Contemporary Projects 12: Robin Rhode

The work of South African artist Robin Rhode originates from his physical interactions with drawings executed on walls on the streets of Johannesburg or, most recently, in his studio in Berlin, where he is now based. The resulting works include performances, wall drawings, photograph compositions, objects, video animations, and film. In developing his process Rhode was first “inspired by a high school initiation rite whereby young pupils were unwillingly taken into the boys’ toilets by senior pupils and forced to interact with chalk-drawn objects on the walls.” Based on this formative childhood experience, Rhode has transformed a puerile game into a compelling and innovative form of expression reminiscent of stop-action films and/or flip books, as well as the art historical movements of constructivism and surrealism. This will be the artist’s first exhibition in Los Angeles. (LACMA).

02. Messi – the devastating decoy

Reading Phil McNulty’s blog after the Arsenal-Barcelona game, I was struck by the number of people who went out of their way to criticise the performance of Lionel Messi. It is indicative of the enormous pressure the young Argentine will be under in the World Cup – the same pressure that broke his friend and former Barca team-mate Ronaldinho four years ago. People are expecting circus tricks and something special in every game. It is the dilemma of the big name star in today’s football. (BBC).

03. Salone del Mobile 2010 Preview (above)

Once again, the design world is honing in on Milan and Salone mania is about to be unleashed. The fair runs from 14th to 19th April but attempting to see everything in just a few days is likely to induce a meltdown. So, to spare you your sanity, we’ve compiled our annual edit of the show highlights. (Wallpaper*).

04. Prints in the Parlor

The American Antiquarian Society’s Graphic Arts department is currently in the early stages of a two-year long project entitled Prints in the Parlor. The project is funded by a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities and focuses on cataloging engravings sisterswhich would have appeared in the American parlor from 1820 to about 1876. Large, single sheet engravings depicting politicians, patriotic events, moral lessons, and religious themes are included in the grant and are being digitized as they are added to our online catalog. I promise a later post with more on these wonderful prints, but today’s blog posting is focused on the second portion of the grant, the engravings which appear in gift books. (pastispresent).

Fashionisto profile the Company of We line for Spring 2010. “Commissioning photographer David Byun for their spring 2010 lookbook, Company of We turns out another fantastical outing with the help of art director Nicholas Bullock and stylist Diego. Casting Tim Bryan, Joe Choi, Trent Kendrick and Wilhelmina’s Taylor, Company of We delivers an occult showing of their spring range. With its participants shaping up to be the perfect scholars, the season is kicked off with a casual spin on tailored blazers and cardigans.”
