Selectism - Pamela Love Men's Jewelry Collection

Pamela Love showcases her collection of men’s jewelry for 2010. Her work may be familiar to many as she has collaborated with the like of Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons and Yigal Azrouel. The Men’s Classic collection works when accessorizing their preferred clientele. Note the Copper Heart Cabashan which freaks me out a bit.

Moncler Gamme Bleu Sunglasses for Spring/Summer 2010

Selectism - Moncler Gamme Bleu Sunglasses for Spring/Summer 2010

HS covers an awesome pair of goggles that remind me of the time traveler spotted in that photo from the 40’s. “They came from nowhere and have pretty much stormed the fashion market in recent years. A brand that was exclusively known for their premium down jackets, is step by step entering every category of the luxury market. We especially like their Thom Browne designed Gamme Bleu collection. As part of the collection, Moncler introduces for Spring/Summer 2010 their first sunglasses. The frame slightly reminds us of Moscot, while the leather pieces remind you of the ski heritage and the 3-stripe strap is of course clearly the Thom Browne signature.”

ACNE Ken Wash Chinos

Selectism - ACNE Ken Wash Chinos

Over lunch this week , a diner mentioned the difficulty in finding a proper fit on chinos. At the time, I also could not think of a pair which had done me right without the need to have them taken in. But this morning, ACNE reminded me that they do serve this market well. Check these Ken Wash chinos from them. “With a comfortably looser top, and a leg which tapers from knee and down, Ken is this summer´s go-to chino. Here in an easy to match summery navy blue.” You can get them direct from ACNE online.

Edifice 3/4 Polo Shirt

29 April 2010, 17.30 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

Selectism - edifice-three-quarter-length-polo-01

We can’t help but think classic golfing style when we see this shirt. Come to think of it, would Tiger Woods have gotten in so much trouble if he wore pieces like this? (yes, but don’t let logic get in the way of this argument). A great piece for when spring stops messing around – few things are more annoying than hot rain – and you can start rolling up your sleeves again. And, as this is part of our unscheduled Japanese extravaganza, you’ll have to get your proxy on to get hold of this one. (Style Cruise)

Trickers for Museum Arks Brogues

Selectism - trickers-black-longwing-01

We were tempted to name all the materials on these brogues in the title but ‘patent leather, scotchgrain leather and suede’ would have been a bit of a mouthful. Museum Ark did make a similar custom pair last year, but they’ve upped the ante this time, using patent leather on the brogue detailing. While these shoes are amazing to look at in their own right, they look a little difficult to actually work into an outfit. But more power to whoever can pull it off. (Arks)

Song remains the same, detailed images after the leap.

NY Times | Why designer clothes cost so much

29 April 2010, 13.30 | Posted in Fashion | 10 comments »

Selectism - ny-times-designer-clothes

The NY times has a timely article on why designer clothes cost the amount they do. We’ve noticed a few price warriors around on the site lately, tending to state that you can get everything cheaper at J.Crew. This article looks at just the discrepancy between high street and designer clothes and just why these articles cost the amount they do.

Lee for SHIPS Denim Jacket

We haven’t teased you with any Japanese product for a while now (it must have been at least a week now) so we feel like redressing the balance today. First up is this Lee denim jacket, made in collaboration with Japanese retailer SHIPS. The white buttons and plaid cuffs make it unique enough to warrant a purchase – providing you can get hold of it in the first place. (Lumine)

Take a leap, see those details…

selectism - around the web

01. Austin Center for Design

“It’s a design school at least 15 years in the making, an idea that simmered in the back of Jon Kolko’s brain. The interactive designer (an associate creative director at Frog Design in Austin, Texas) and one-time Savannah College of Art and Design instructor had long wanted to create an environment that could help designers find more meaning in their careers. It was a concern of many of Kolko’s former students, who were working at what were considered dream jobs, places like Nike and Starbucks.” (design observer).

02. Acting White: The Ironic Legacy of Desegregation

“Commentators from Bill Cosby to Barack Obama have observed the phenomenon of black schoolchildren accusing studious classmates of “acting white.” How did this contentious phrase, with roots in Jim Crow-era racial discord, become a part of the schoolyard lexicon, and what does it say about the state of racial identity in the American system of education?” (YUP).

03. Mourinho vows to end Barca Champions League ‘obsession’

“Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho claims Barcelona are “obsessed” with winning the Champions League at the Bernabeu – home of arch-rivals Real Madrid.” (BBC).

04. Introduction to Oogabooga Studies

“In the first two columns I wrote here for FlowTV I argued that “New Media” was not a particularly useful term for describing the field; indeed, I argued that it may in fact obscure more than it reveals. What I suggested is that this field of study is neither about “media” nor about something “new.” Both in the comments section and in conversations I had subsquent to these pieces being published, others have, correctly, pointed out that it is easier to say what something should not be called than to actually propose what it ought to be called. So, I thought I would take this final column to propose what I think this field of study should be called: ‘Oogabooga Studies.’” (flowtv).

05. Shanghai 2010: The Pavilions (above)

“Back on March we featured a fantastic set of photos of the pavilions for Shanghai World Expo 2010 almost finished. Now, with only three days left for the grand opening to the public, the pavilions seem to be ready for the more than 70 million people expected to visit the Expo between April 30 and October 31.” (arch daily).

WSJ | Fashion Houses Embrace Online Videos

28 April 2010, 22.37 | Posted in Art | No comments »

Selectism - Fashion Houses Embrace Online Videos

There is a great article on the WSJ discussing the ever growing embrace of fashion houses around films. “Arty, sometimes obscure videos have long been produced by fashion houses looking for a subtle way to peddle their brand to a discriminating audience. But such efforts have been limited to the big brands and scattershot, reflecting the high cost of production and screen time. While getting a 30-second television commercial can be expected to cost at least $1 million, an online fashion video can average $50,000 to produce with no distribution costs, executives say.”
