DIA Student Front The 73rd Annual Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition

An exhibition I can really get behind -

The Annual Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition features more than 300 works of young artists, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, in a range of mediums including drawing, ceramics, collage, fibers, and jewelry, among others.

The 73rd Annual Student Exhibition was organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts and Detroit Public Schools and is made possible with the support of the Ruth T. Cattell Education Endowment Fund, the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the City of Detroit. Additional support provided by General Motors Corporation, JP Morgan Chase, and MASCO Corporation.

On view at the Detroit Institute of Art through May 30, 2010. The museum has set up a Flickr page including a great amount of the kid’s work and some installation views. Some of the work is truly fantastic. (via Curated).

Selectism - Kostas Murkudus Winter 2010 Preview

The Kostas Murkudus line for Winter 2010 could fill the pages of a women’s blog very easily but we’re referring to them on a few select looks for men. They do seem to be understated when placed against the women’s line, if not a bit of a second consideration. Nevertheless, we present those looks for review here.

More looks at the Kostas Murkudus Winter 2010 collection after the click.

Selectism - Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair Autumn 2010 Looks

Scandinavia’s Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair previews their upcoming Autumn 2010 men’s collection for you readers. “Picture a young Japanese guy interpreting the stereotype look of a traditional British male… would appear dressing up in a Japanese manner, and the core of the collection is presented. The cultural backgrounds colours the way garments are worn, changing their visual shape and silhouette. Big checks, argyle patterns  and pin stripes mixed with faded greens, blues and reds forms the colour palette with a solid  foundation of black and white as our ever lasting base.”

“We’re very proud of how well the Soulland Adler Fedora has been received in the short time it has existed. To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with our favorite crew from Alken Film and Nahm Studio and made a short film that takes you backstage and shows how the fedoras are hand crafted in a small factory in Copenhagen.”

First Look | PRPS Autumn/Winter 2010

28 April 2010, 17.30 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

Selectism - prps-autumn-2010-01

While everyone knows about PRPS’ denim by now, their outerwear is strengthening season on season. On the coat side, there’s denim work jackets, shearling lined coats alongside the usual cropped denim jackets. The main influences were aztec (which we’re sure came off the navajo trend that started appearing a few seasons ago) and 50’s western, which came up in their new vintage denim, the LTD 20. Washed denim is still a hot bone of contention in menswear (stonewash denim still gives plenty of folks the chills) but if you were to take the easy way out, PRPS would be the brand of choice.

Take a leap to see the rest of the collection.

Tom Hunter ‘The Ghetto Series’

Selectism - tom-hunter-ghetto-series-01

It’s Nice That turn us onto Tom Hunter’s ‘The Ghetto Series’. Focusing on London Fields in 1994 – before it turned into the home of latte sipping creative types – the series focuses on the London Fields that was described as a “a crime-ridden, derelict ghetto, a cancer – a blot on the landscape”. The photographs, originally part of a campaign to save the community from developers and the local council, were of fellow artists that Hunter knew at the time. (Tom Hunter)

Raf Simons for Fred Perry Button Through Polo

Selectism - raf-simons-fred-perry-buttoned-polo-01

Here’s the annual return of the button through polo shirt. We featured it last year, but it’s such a good idea (and such a nice alternative to the white tee) that we had to feature it again. Price warriors be warned, it’s relatively costly at £145 so you make sure you’re in love with it before you spend your rent money. (Oki-Ni)

Take a leap, see those details.

Outlier Workwear Shorts

selectism - Outlier Workwear Shorts

Though fashion tides seem to be changing (and shorts in city life are seemingly more acceptable), I still like my cropped pants rugged and functional.

Outlier’s Workwear Shorts hit the mark. Made of the same doubleweave canvas as their long legged brother, the shorts hit right at the top of the knee and repel dirt, rain, grime, and hopefully the residue of a lobster roll. Three colors are available – black, indigo, and slate.

More info at Outlier. More images after the jump.

Rotary Magazine

Selectism - rotary-magazine-01.jpg

Magculture turns us onto this interesting ‘magazine’ project. In a project stretching the world magazine to its very limits, Rotary magazine is made using old slides from ebay and can only be seen on a projector.

As magculture states, ‘Jack (Maxwell) and Luke (Archer) – two Bath Spa students -have created an editorial experience that is structured, uses different types of content, and works very nicely as a look at an old tech process and uses that same technology to present itself.’

Go over to their site to see a mock up of the mag in motion. (Rotary Magazine)
