Muji Hinoki Wood Tin Candle

Selectism - muji-hinoki-wood-candle

We’re fans of this candle – well, as much a fan as you can be of a candle – for three reasons. 1) It smells nice 2) It’s cheap (£3.50) and 3) There’s more than a little nod to the Monocle X CDG candle. It’s essentially a very cheap way to get your Monocle on. (Muji)

It’s a bank holiday both here and in the states, so we’re taking it easy on the posting. This video comes via Always Never and documents one woman’s denim wear over a two year period. Denim geekery aside, she also shows us how to rock a paisley shirt without looking too fashun.

Selectism - Norse Projects Chambray Shirt

We love Norse Projects here at Selectism. This chambray shirt from their Spring/Summer collection is a favorite in this editor’s closet. Need Supply has it in stock Stateside. “Chambray button down with a one-wash treatment. Pockets at chest with button closures.” A sailor shirt?  Not really. It’s more like a lounger. Rock it.

Selectism - ZURIICK Ake Pirate Canvas Shoes in Carbon

Alter has this solid set of canvas shoes from the Zuriick line. The carbon colorway in the Ake Pirate shoe is just clean and neutral. Seeing as it is close to grey, they will undoubtably work with almost anything. As usual, we recommend you wear them out to their death. They’ll set you back 55$US a pair.

Paul Weller to Design for Pretty Green

Selectism - Paul Weller to Design for Pretty Green

NME reports that Paul Weller may be giving the Gallagher brother a helping hand with design for his Pretty Green label. As reported, the Jam mastermind seems to already be working on some looks which may well work out to be a signature line under the Pretty Green label. ” ‘I’ve got designs for suits, jackets, shoes – I’ve been talking to Liam about them,’ he explained. ‘It’s the same principle as what he’s [Gallagher] doing, really – stuff I’d wear myself.’ ”

This is not the first time that Weller has dipped into fashion. His love for Fred Perry is fairly well known.

Selectism - It's Not a Motorcycle, Baby. It's a Mobile Barbecue Pit.

01. “So You Need a Typeface?” Poster

“Originally created for a class at the Danish School of Media and Journalism in Copenhagen, and based on FontShop’s 100 Best Typefaces, Julian Hansen’s ‘So You Need a Typeface?’ became an instant online sensation with mentions in not just design blogs, but more mainstream outlets like MetaFilter, BuzzFeed and Lifehacker. And just like Hollywood studios pick-up hot indie flicks here and there, production mavens Scribble on Everything” (fpo)

02. Gorgeous , the Geotagger’s World Atlas

“The maps are ordered by the number of pictures taken in the central cluster of each one. This is a little unfair to aggressively polycentric cities like Tokyo and Los Angeles, which probably get lower placement than they really deserve because there are gaps where no one took any pictures.” flickr (coudal)

03. It’s Not a Motorcycle, Baby. It’s a Mobile Barbecue Pit. (above)

“When we heard that RUB was commissioning Orange County Chopper, of American Chopper fame, to make a mobile barbecue pit, we thought it was a pretty cool idea. We expected it to be a novelty, like a two-headed kitten or the world’s largest ball of string. Nothing prepared us for the mind-numbing coolness of the actual RUB Chopper: The restaurant’s owner, Andrew Fischel, correctly characterizes as ‘the sickest, baddest thing in the world.’ ” (2007) (newyork)

04. Pitchfork Guide to Summer Festivals

“Memorial Day weekend is here in just a few hours, which means summer unofficially starts right about now. Among many other awesome things, that means we’re now heading straight into summer festival season.” (pitchf)

Selectism - Marni Autumn/Winter 2010 Looks

189 gets a hold of some new looks at the Marni Autumn/Winter 2010 offering. As they mention, Marni, “predictably uses brown/mustard tones and focuses mainly on the warmer wear, suited to the season of course. The range seems to have a good balance, no item is too overpowering, so you could customise each piece with other items from the collection.”

Parabellum Courier Wallet

28 May 2010, 21.30 | Posted in Accessories | No comments »

Selectism - Parabellum Courier Wallet

A new line of men’s accessories popping out of Los Angeles. Parabellum aims to bring even more focus to the art of working leather. “We grew up obsessing about and refurbishing antique and vintage luxury items in the basement of our father’s antique shop on Western Avenue in Hollywood. We learned from our grandfather, who made custom men’s suits by hand in the back of his Haberdashery on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit… We remember when luxury goods grew richer and more luxurious with time and use.”

With this in mind, Parabellum set up to try something new. One of their key features is the use of “Reservation Bison.” “Each hide is carefully selected, and treated in small batches by our micro-tannery, using age-old techniques that allow its elegant natural feel and luxurious texture to radiate.” Their Courier wallet, which features multiple internal snap pockets is a great example of what to expect from Parabellum.
