selectism - disfarmer photographs at mass moca

We’ve highlighted a few photography exhibitions that have some connection to menswear – overt or otherwise.

Mass MOCA’s current exhibition of Mike Disfarmer has an indirect work wear theme. The artist took intimate portraits of the people of Heber Springs, Arkansas, over a six year period beginning in 1939. What makes them exception is the process. Long after the technique became obsolete, Disfarmer continued to utilize glass plate photography. The result is honest portraiture, the sitter choosing exactly how to present themselves during the often laborious process.

In the 1970s, thousands of glass plate negatives were discovered, revealing the wealth of Disfarmer’s output. Disfarmer Photographs celebrates Disfarmer’s artistry and his dedication to documenting the American heartland.

On view through December 31, 2010.
