01. Brewing Sixpoint’s Dr. Klankenstein for the Modern

“The Modern at MoMA might not be the first stop that craft beer lovers think of when searching for their fix. But thanks to the Alsatian eatery’s collaboration with Sixpoint Craft Ales (not to mention an interesting—if expensive—collection of imported bottles), its suds credentials are sky-high. In addition to three regular Sixpoint drafts (currently Sweet Action, Brownstone and Apollo), beverage director Ehren Ashkenazi pours one proprietary beer from the Red Hook brewery. The latest—a medieval-syle steinbier brewed with molten rocks—gives new meaning to extreme beer (a term generally used to describe suds with hardcore hops or offbeat ingredients). Click through the slide show above to see the super-charged (and slightly dangerous) brewing process, then head to the Modern to get your hands on the one-off beer.” (Timeout).

02. The Civil War, Courtesy of the American Antiquarian Society

“Next year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. Many institutions are planning exhibitions, activities, and publications around the events which tore the United States apart between 1861 and 1865. Some organizations have already contacted AAS regarding the possibility of borrowing or reproducing material from our collections. The uptick in such requests has caused me to think about the vast Civil War holdings that fall under the auspices of the Society’s Graphic Arts department.” (Past is Present).

03. Havana: Nostalgia Is a Dangerous Business

“During the opening session of the first Havana Biennial of Architecture [1], convened in March 2002 in the beautifully restored Convent of St. Francis of Assisi in Old Havana, Andres Duany, the Miami-based Cuban architect, delivered an impassioned lecture on the architecture and urban design of Havana. In a bravura bilingual performance, Duany praised the extraordinarily high quality of the buildings from every era and the cohesiveness of the city as a total artistic creation. He lamented the intrusion of modern (read post-Revolution) construction and suggested that the “Soviet style” projects of recent years be excised from the urban fabric. [2] Duany concluded his stirring talk with the astonishing proposition that any vacant parcel of land in the historic quarters of Havana — and there are many vacant parcels, as old buildings have collapsed from lack of maintenance — be redeveloped only with replicas of the buildings that stood on those sites previously. This, he explained, was the moral track, as the original structures had not been removed intentionally or for any positive purpose, but were the victims of a socio-cultural entropy that must be reversed.” (design observer).

04. David Hockney creates hand-drawn art on Apple’s iPad (above)

“Not content with pushing the boundaries of conventional art in the 60s, David Hockney is doing much the same in 2010, creating ‘digi-art’ on the Apple iPad.” (Switched on Art).

Selectism - Aquarama Spring/Summer 2010 Jackets

Porvocacao has stock on the new Aquarama Spring/Summer 2010 collection. “The history of the Aquarama brand is based on the extreme care of detail and quality of workmanship that express the “made in Italy” authenticity and tradition. Their jackets and blazers use high-tech and natural fabrics that range from new light nylons to precious fresh cottons. Some are fully reversible and all come personalized with particular finishings such as cast colored metal buttons or embroidered pocket squares. With Spring now at full speed, these strike us as pretty good answers in our demand for lighter garments.”

As readers are aware, we love to discuss in house publications, magazine, printed matter, and of course books. In the opinion of this writer, they are the new calling cards for brands and retailers alike. Carefully thought out tomes not only offer a permanent record for brands but also a wonderful platform for emerging and current artists, photographers, and editors, to dip their work into focused matters.

The bi-annual book from J. Lindeberg is one of those tomes which puts a smile on my face when they arrive. The oversized and heavyweight nature of the book (it is of course coffee table material) as well as the content inside keeps focus on the brand’s Spring/Summer offering while visually interpreting the material through the eyes of numerous minds.

For those who want to peruse the book, J. Lindeberg kindly offers a full online flip-book for your viewing pleasure.

Selectism - Aloha Rag Collection for Spring 2010

A few new things from Aloha Rag in the form of a small in-house collection. “Spring 2010 Tatsugo Yoda introduces the Aloha Rag brand. The collection consists of 10 men’s and 10 women’s items that are a nostalgic take on Americana basics ranging from a $75 organic t-shirt to an $800 sumptuous leather motorcycle jacket.  There are reinterpretations of classics, such as a military inspired vest designed with a cap sleeve and heavy studding or a light weight boxy jacket done in a distressed flannel for an unexpected finish.  Each piece echoes Americana favorites incorporating a modern edge and finished with the meticulous attention to detail his customers demand.”

109th Annual Student Exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art

selectism - 109th Annual Student Exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art

One of my absolute favorite student exhibitions – for diversity and size – opens this weekend in Philadelphia. For the 109th time, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts showcases BFA students, 3rd and 4th year Certificate Program students, and MFA candidates. The work on view regularly gives contemporary twist to traditional artistic styles and (exciting for collectors) is almost all up for grabs.

Aside from the exhibition and sale, students are up for some coveted prizes and scholarships – but, it’s light hearted (on the surface) competition, the real winners being the visitors.

I can’t really express how much I enjoy the PAFA show each year. If you can make it to Philly by June 6, 2010, do so. Things kick off for the general public on May 15, 2010.
