Selectism - ts(s) Autumn/Winter 2010 Looks

189 breaks through with looks from the Autumn 2010 ts(s) collection. Their notes sum it up in a youthful way. “We finally get some solid looks at the ts(s) fall/winter 2010 collection, which i’ve been waiting on for a little while now. My god, the Suzuki family have some serious talent, these guys are pretty much unstoppable. If you didn’t know, Takuji Suzuki is the founder and designer of ts(s), brother of Engineered Garments founder Daiki Suzuki. So clothing kind of runs in the family. I really like the intricacy featured in this collection, there are so many hidden details.”

Smart Turnout Cricket Sweater

selectism - Smart Turnout Cricket Sweater

With the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup in full swing, its worth a nod to a sport of sublime style and tradition. Unfortunately, the pace and pizazz of the fast format has given way to technicolor shirts and heavy sponsor placement. However, that shouldn’t make us forget the glory of fine whites, large brimmed sun caps, and the mighty cricket sweater.

For sake of ease those above are from Smart Turnout, who specialize in British classics and have a US point of sale too. Sure, there might be better cricket sweaters on the market… and we all have our favorites… but this is more for celebration of a great game during one of its keynote events.

Your Truly continue to amaze us with their videos, this time teaming up with Delorean as they play ‘Grow’, off the album ‘Subiza’. We’d be lying if we said we’d heard of this band before – that’s what we get for being so into fashun – but the song’s turned us into fans, so it’s well worth a listen.

Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle

selectism - Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle

The Museum of Arts and Design gets in on the bicycle craze today with the opening of Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle. Six renowned frame builders (including Jeff Jones, Dario Pegoretti, and Sacha White) are on display. In all, there are 21 bicycles, selected by curator Michael Maharam (owner of the eponymous textile firm), each chosen to reflect the intersection of art, craft, and design inherent to the beauty of custom bicycle manufacture.

From the museum -

Despite the seeming simplicity of their form and mechanics, bicycles offer a unique challenge to their makers. Rider and machine meet at three contact points-saddle, handlebar, and pedal. The custom builder’s chief preoccupation is with fit; simply taking a rider’s measurements may require more than two hours for a single commission. Every bicycle is a highly refined piece of engineering.

Custom bicycle building involves master metalwork: bending, welding, carving and wrapping steel, titanium, aluminum and carbon. A graphic artist’s eye is required in the application of paint and decorative flourishes. The custom models exhibited in Bespoke are the virtuosic productions of individual makers who lavish great attention on detail. The resulting product reflects the builder’s sensibility paired with the rider’s unique needs, turning the custom bicycle into a work of art.

If interested the exhibition is up at MAD until August 15, 2010.

Bleu de Paname chest pocket T-shirt

Selectism - bleu-de-paname-pocket-tee

We’re not usually that into grey t-shirts. Not because of any stylistic rule or anything, they were just the worst colour to wear if you dropped a bead of sweat (something we learned the hard way playing basketball in a grey top). So it’s with trepidation that we recommend this BDP tee. We like everything about it, but we’d refrain from if you’re the sweaty type. (Tres Bien)

Rag & Bone Marine Jacket

Selectism - rag-bone-marine-jacket-01

Now that the weather is messing about with us (in the UK at least) it’s the perfect time to get hold of a light jacket. This Rag & Bone jacket is light enough for our tastes (and this temperamental weather) and the olive colour means it’ll go with your indigo denim as well as your chinos. Just remember to leave the hat and smug smile at home. (Forward)

iDsgn | ‘Nice Tomatoes, Sweet Pea’

Selectism - seed-design-01

Why not start off the morning with a curveball? iDsgn looks at the oft-overlooked world seed packet design and, surprisingly, it’s an interesting read.

‘Until the mid-20th century, seed packets were lavishly illustrated with chromolithographs or engravings, after which photography became the preferred medium. Along the way a good deal of fantasy appeal was lost, artfulness sacrificed in favor of the “real” images provided by photographs. Early photographic compositions stripped the packages of visual charm, replacing it with a straightforward, pedestrian image, often accompanied by bland typography.’

Selectism - Illustrator Frank Frazetta, R.I.P.

01. Posted: Traducing Ruddle

“Posted’ launches with this bizarre item that arrived earlier this week. Traducing Rubble is an 8pp B&W tabloid newspaper that consists entirely of nonsense. The words are all real English words, their random use within sentences meaningless. Created by artist Mark Manders, it’s designed to look like a genuine newspaper that ‘dissolves’ on closer inspection, and is the fifth such newspaper he has produced. It is highly convincing, it really looks like there must be meaning on the pages. But it’s all gobbledygook.” (magculture)

02. Illustrator Frank Frazetta, R.I.P.

“Comic book, science fiction, and fantasy fans everywhere were saddened today by the death of illustrator supreme Frank Frazetta. Frazetta was known for his science fiction and fantasy book covers, and also for his many magazine covers for publications like Eerie, Creepy, Vampirella, and the National Lampoon. His penchant for drawing scantily-clad women with outrageous proportions made him a favorite of males of all ages, although surely SPD members appreciated Frazetta for his deft drawing and attention to detail.” (SPD)

03. Before & After: Mr. Singh’s Chilli Sauce

“In the first episode of the BBC series titled, ‘High Street Dreams’, (10th May) Pearlfisher’s Creative Partner Jonathan Ford and his award-winning design team lead the successful rebrand of Mr Singh’s chilli sauce range, which was founded in 2008 by an East London family. Pearlfisher worked with the family to transform the sauce, whose original on-pack graphics were created by the father of the brand’s co-founder Kuldip Singh Sahota, into a supermarket contender.” (dieline)

04. Cartodendri Seating by Daniele Papuli

“Almost like tree stumps, a series of striped stools and tables were quietly intriguing at Dilmos Gallery during Milan’s Design Week. These Cartodendri by Daniele Papuli are made from magazines and are fully functional despite the seemingly delicate nature of their stripes. Papuli is a Milanese fibre artist who works with materials such as paper, polypropylene and polyester.” (mocoloco)
