Warriors of Radness John’s WOR Walk Shorts

28 May 2010, 19.03 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

selectism - Warriors of Radness John's WOR Walk Shorts

At Selectism, we’ve been fans of Warriors of Radness longer than most. The surf-inspired lines brand of humor and style continues to have great appeal, and their latest collaborative product finds the guys working with John’s of Japan. A simple name, John’s WOR, titles a simple collection of 1970s surf inspired garments. Colors are muted and subtle, all products are made in Los Angeles.

We’re fond on the Cord Walk Shorts, which come in three color options ranging from quite bold to a gray that even John Major might find appropriate. For those bolder of heart, the collaboration also features a richly printed trio of Tribal Walk Shorts.

Find the printed pairs after the jump, and find the entire collection at Reserve LA.

Selectism - Second Son Spring/Summer 2010

It is a slow and lazy Friday before the Memorial Day Weekend in the States, so how about some casual wear? Second Son showcases some of their more street friendly looks for Spring. “The pocket tees are a natural progression from this, utilizing a completely new slimmer cut t-shirt and interesting button-down embroidered fabric on the pockets which make these tee’s both wearable and sartorially versatile.  The Oxford shirt appears in a classic blue as well as a light grey, and features unusual tonal paneling on the cuff placket, breast pocket, shoulder yoke and hem…”

McNairy Takes over for Suzuki at Woolrich Woolen Mills

Selectism - Mark McNairy Takes over for Suzuki at Woolrich Woolen Mills

Mark McNairy is taking the creative reigns over at Woolrich Woolen Mills. Mr. McNairy, who is best known for his work at J. Press, and of course his own New Amsterdam collection, replaces Daiki Suzuki as creative director for the brand. His personal take on the line looks to pull from some WWM’s 50’s and 60’s sportwear collections.

“It’s not going to be red-and-black buffalo check — that I can tell you,” McNairy said. “I think I’ll end up adding a military aspect and some Ivy League. In the late Fifties and early Sixties, Woolrich had a sportswear collection that wasn’t necessarily geared for the outdoors and was more about the piece goods like Ivy League styles, duffle coats and things like that. It’s going to be a mixture of the things I love.”

Here at Selectism, we’re very excited to see what Mr. McNairy has in store for the Woolrich Woolen Mills collection. Congratulations.

Quai De Valmy Quilted Leather Jacket

So you wanna be a baller, shot caller, brawler? (sorry, No Way Out was in our ipod shuffle this morning) Well, a jacket like this is a good place to start. It’s got all the prerequisites of ballers (and shot callers).  It’s handsome, pricey (2500 euros) and luxurious to the point of disgusting excess (rabbit fur lining). If you’ve got the spare coins  -  and that’s a huge if  – get your 98′ era Diddy on with this jacket. (Colette)

Selectism - hentsch-man-joe-coral-trousers-01

Every man needs a pair of brightly coloured trousers in his wardrobe – and yes, we know we’re stretching the word ‘need’ to it’s very limits – so why not start with this pair of Hentsch Man trousers? Yes they’re bright, that’s why we like them. And here’s our advice on how to wear them. Step one, put them on. Step two, walk out the door. (Opening Ceremony)

Song remains the same, detailed images after the leap.

Albam Field Jacket

Selectism - albam-field-jacket-01

A wise man once said ‘functionality comes at cost’. That made up phrase has clearly been Albam’s mantra, who’ve been stepping it up on the functional features of their jackets. While that has raised the price (this comes in at £285 instead of their usual £195) there’s a lot of features that will be genuinely useful. Take the back cinch for instance, one criticism we’ve heard about Albam – the only one actually – is that their cuts are a little boxy. This back cinch fixes that, leaving it up to the user to decide how slim or boxy they want their jackets. To end on a cliche, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. (Albam)

Take a leap to see a couple more shots of this jacket.

Tellason for Tenue de Nimes

selectism - Tellason for Tenue de Nimes

Seems sometime since we featured any denim.

Dutch shop Tenue de Nimes has taken stock of an exclusive run of 24 pieces produced by San Francisco’s Tellason. Those familiar with Tellason might remember their interest in small batch store co-branded jeans, and if so let this be a first example. The denim itself comes from Cone Mills White Oak plant and features a specially designed patch from Portland’s Tanner Goods (the Tellason “T” fusing with the Tenue de Nimes cross).

In celebration of the release the shop has conducted a brief and thoughtful interview with Tellason founders Tony Patella and Pete Searson, now available on their blog.

Each of the 24 pairs is hand numbered and will run a shade under 200 Euro. Details after the jump.

Selectism - logopops-01

Creative Review turns us onto Lolli-pop, the new book from Massimo Gammacurta. First made as an experiment, it’s now turned into another example of the blogger-ternt-book phenomenon that shows no signs of slowing down. If you missed these the first time round – like we did – then take a leap to see the logos of Apple, YSL, McDonalds and Lactoste turned into lollipops.

The book is out now, available from BIS.

As usual, further images are after the leap.

Selectism - Making Soft Pretzels the Old-Fashioned Way

Beau Colburn’s weekly roundup…

01. BP’s Photo Blockade of the Gulf Oil Spill
“The ability to document a disaster, particularly through images, is key to focusing the nation’s attention on it, and the resulting clean-up efforts. Within days of the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, pictures of dead otters, fish, and birds, as well as oil-covered shorelines, ignited nationwide outrage and led to a backlash against Exxon.” (newsweek)

02. a love supreme.
“The cover art was pure early Impulse, minimal and clean modern — a look and feel pioneered by their art director, Robert Flynn. A Love Supreme hews to the template: a well-composed photograph bleeding full out to the edges with the type set all-caps in one of the three or four fonts they limited themselves to — in this case, Anzeigen Grotesk, which in German loosely translates to ‘Advertising Sans-Serif.’” (rockthatfont)

02. Making Soft Pretzels the Old-Fashioned Way (above)
“Despite street pretzels’ low state, they come from a noble family. In much of Germany and parts of Switzerland and Austria, the pretzel is the symbol of the bread baker’s art, as the baguette is in France (though the pretzel is much older). Wooden and iron pretzels have hung over bakery doors for centuries, especially in the south of Germany.” (nyt)

03. 7 Key Turning Points That Made Apple No. 1
“Apple has been through some extreme ups and downs, but today the corporation climbed to an all-time high. Apple surpassed longtime rival Microsoft in market capitalization, making the Cupertino, California, company the most valuable technology company in the world, for the moment, at least.

The milestone is even more remarkable given Apple’s single-digit share of the computer market. Microsoft, by contrast, runs on about 90 percent of the world’s PCs.” (wired)
